Remix: is the reworking or adaptation of an existing work, generally efforts are focused on creating an alternate version of the original mix. Also in most cases specific samples are provided from the original mix's author to the remixer, usually isolated instruments, synths, bass lines, guitar riffs, percussions, kick, etc.

Mash-up: involves the combination of two or more works that may be very different from one another. Usually it's done by grabbing entire song fragments/samples from anywhere.

Both terms are mostly associated with studio work, this is the main difference in comparison to playing a versioned (or same as original) cover live. You can also record a cover, but you are playing in essence the original composition with or without modifications, whilst mash-ups and remixes tend to aim towards a new or alternate composition from the original.

...A mashup is where two tracks or possibly more are put together to create a third track. Also, often called a bootleg back in the day.

The first part is correct, but a bootleg is anything not officially licensed or sanctioned for release by the rights-holder. Victor Calderone's remix of Hopelessly Devoted and Junior's Rocket Man remix are examples of popular remixes that were only available as bootlegs. Back in the day we also referred to them as "white-labels", because they were usually pressed with a blank label to avoid lawsuits.

Unreleased original songs were also commonly bootlegs. One of the most successful was I Got My Education by Uncanny Alliance. It was HUGE as a bootleg, and wound up with an official commercial release months later.

To get back on track, DJ Earworms' year end "United States of Pop" tracks are the perfect example of a mashup taken to the extreme. I suppose the new Apple licensing will allow such recordings to be streamed via AM.

Mixes and remixes give new color to songs, and it's nice to see there are more ways to express sound on Apple Music.
Curated playlists also put songs in different context and they're also great to discover new songs, but one more thing I hope to get is being able to share original playlists with friends.
Maybe I just don't know that it's there, but iTunes Store has user playlists, it baffles me why Apple Music doesn't.

Bye bye Soundcloud.

I was just thinking the same. I've found some fantastic DJs on Soundcloud who's remixes I prefer over the originals but I don't like the Soundcloud app or having to manage yet another library. I was thinking of ripping my fav songs and dropping them into my Apple Music library but that's too cumbersome, and I'd miss out on new tracks.

With Connect providing the social features, if they play this right, Apple is going to totally eat Soundcloud's lunch.

Cool. They've added some appeal to one of the smallest fractions of the music listener market. Great target. I'll stick to Spotify thanks.

I'm seconding this. Soundcloud was built by artists who were making mashups and bootlegs. Now you can't post anything on there without it being taken down. I have a soundcloud page and just last week a mix I posted over a year ago got taken down by sony. They don't even tell you what part of the content is infringing. It's quite infuriating. I understand the legal precedence but it's quite ridiculous in an age where popularity of content is based on remix culture.

I love the Spotify integration possibilities...I wish Apple would open up AM like that too. The Spotify integration of DJAY is fantastic...would love to be able to do AM as well...the more music you have access to the better...especially since some artists are available on one and not the other.

someone keep me honest, but I think Spotify already offers this service. I know there are many apps such as Fit Radio and 8Tracks that offer this.

Yes, if anything EDM is a lot less popular than 3 years ago, but still popular; "rise" would be at 10+ years ago.
Obviously it depends what is deemed EDM.

Umm are you sure you're not just 3 years older and don't care for it as much?

"Exists" and "popular" are two very, very different things. Was EDM selling out music festivals of 150,000+ people 20 years ago? I think not.

Oh hell yeah! Maybe just not in your neck of the backwoods. Love Parade, MayDay, Nature One, Thunderdome had tens of thousands and hundreds of thousands of attendees throughout the 1990s.

No way. Too many people love soundcloud; including artists. This feature on AM will just be another avenue for DJ's to reach audiences. Soundcloud is the coolest place to find new, obscure, or experimental music. I have an All Access account and still use Soundcloud.

sorry but soundcloud is going downhill right now. Lot of false copyright alerts etc.
many producers who upload their promo material there are actually pretty pissed.

DJ sets are uploaded to mixcloud nowadays.

Whoa, let's clear something up here. The term 'EDM' is problematic. It stands for Electronic Dance Music, which basically can mean lots of things, but for the last 5-6 years refers to a specific style within the broad genre of house music (which has been around for 30 years). Thanks to America's renewed interest in house music starting from 2010-ish, this style has grown out to be immensely popular and for many people has become the face of what house music is all about. Indeed, it might as well be considered pop music at this point, with all the commercialism and 'superficialism' attached. Perfect for Apple Music. I quote: "The service "allows everyone to make money on this content for the first time"...

I highly doubt you will find a lot of true underground (e.g. not catered to the masses) house or techno music on streaming services. I think it just won't work either, since the scene relies heavily on DJs playing records in clubs, and they would not use a streaming service of lousy quality, if they even use a laptop at all.

This is really great. Apple's EDM offerings on Beats 1 have been stellar with One Mix, Eric Prydz, Skrillex and now this. Love it! Clearly Apple is focused on creating some solid content for Beats 1. I do hope they focus on such original shows with some focus on rock music. So far its Hip Hop, Rap and EDM and Elton's Show which is a mix of pop and alternative

Is Zane's show all hip hop, rap and EDM?

Is Haim's show all hip hop, rap and EDM?

Is the Alligator Hour all hip hop, rap and EDM?

Is the mix tap all hip hop, rap and EDM?

Can we ever put the 'its all rap and hip hop' to bed? Ever? :D

I'm 48 and have 2 late teens and their gang of friends hanging around.... I'm quite attuned to music, probably because I got a huge collection of songs, albums both physical (CD, vinyl) and in digital format collected over 30 years and the equipment to play it well and even loudly sometimes :). Yep, they love their mother all right ;-) (we also got a kickass cinema room too).

Went to raves when they weren't even called that, and still going dancing now, though it starts to feel a bit weird to dance with people in their teens and 20s (feel the LCD Soundsystem guy... I'm losing my edge). I've been interested in dance music since the 1970s (loved 1970s funk).

EDM is less popular than a few years back, but that's not to say it has fallen out of favor; music is cyclical, nothing stays at 100% for very long.

Soundcloud - available to play for anyone with an internet connection.
Apple Music - only available to the current 12 million subscribers.

Sure way to limit your potential audience.

Applying your logic no one should care to develop for iOS. After all Android has a much larger audience.
