Here's a breakdown of the basic EDM terms.

Remix = An edited version of the original song. Artist has full access to the original version (i.e. basslines, vocals etc)
Bootleg = Same as remix, but artist doesn't have access to the original song components (i.e. makes edits on top of the normal MP3 file)
Mashup = Two or more songs combined together.

Mix = Essentially a mixtape consisting of numerous songs, remixes, mashups etc.

Same terms as they used to be in music, for actual regular compositions, just reapplied to a world of DJ overlaying/overdubbings and other samples to call itself new.

I would say yes. If you listen to a lot of what is on Beats1 and other channels, there is a lot of obscure music on there. Apple giving an avenue of exposure to underground doesn't make that music mainstream. Think of the phrase 'underground' as referring to the origin...not the overall polarity of the genre.

If it's being pushed by one of the largest tech companies in the world is it really "underground"

Not to discount your plight, but anecdotes are typically only good for evaluating an individual experience. Your experience with Soundcloud is not everyone's experience. I'm sure there are artists who have a completely differing experience than you did. Their anecdotes would most likely be varying degrees of opposite from yours.

Nope.

As someone who was a professional club DJ for over 30years, one of my biggest pet peeves is the current common use of the term "remix" to refer to a "cover" version (which is a song re-recorded with new artists/vocalists).

Fair enough. Supporting evidence does make them seem to be in a world of hurt. Again no offense, but your single anecdote was a just that... a single anecdote. I tend to lend little credence to them singularly. Combined with your other links, you make a very compelling case. A pretty disappointing, very compelling case. I really liked SC. They do look pretty f'd.

Good info.

Doubt Apple is going to stop here. If this takes off and becomes successful, I can see Apple opening similar channels for different genres. Adding this is pretty damn cool. Apple can't do anymore with streaming that others haven't already done so to do this to expand what streaming music is pretty significant and will be interesting to see what happens in the future.

Yup. I too used to LOVE them. That's why I'm now so saddened, and I must say, angry for their unbelievably harsh ways.

They had to figure out years ago a way for artists and right holders to monetize remixes and mixtapes made by other artists; instead they puntished the latter category, in a typical lose-lose situation.

That's a pet peeve of mine too. People make that assumption because a lot tends to fall under the banner of "remix". At its core it's an alteration of a song from it's original state. It can be a simple edit of an additional baseline to a total reworking of a song

This news is great however. Hopefully i'll be able to hear some underground gems that I lost from my old mp3 collection.

Bye bye Soundcloud.

Good riddance more like.... Had nothing but issues with those guys. Whereby, my DJ Sets have been removed due to their archaic copyright agreements with labels etc. So sacked them off, and now use Mixcloud.

If, by any chance, you're interested... Search RandomGeeza.
[doublepost=1458061465][/doublepost]FYI: A remix is where an artist, musician, or DJ has taken the stems of the track and reworked them. Changing the structure, riffs and adding their own, often identifiable sound.

A mashup is where two tracks or possibly more are put together to create a third track. Also, often called a bootleg back in the day.

And as for EDM, what a pile of **** that is... Stick to something a little less commercial and under the radar.

EDM... what a terrible, terrible, acronym for a even more insidious genre.
