Someone still has to develop the app and service to provide the content. There may be other places (as you mentioned) to listen for free.
I don't know as much about classical as I'd like, and I'm hoping this will have some tools that help me follow a thread if I find something I want to hear more of.
Pop music is mostly 3-minute songs. That's it (with exceptions). And, nowadays, mostly 'performed' without using musicians (or even produced by people incapable of playing one single note on any instrument - thanks to modern productions software). I don't say it's bad - because I enjoy also modern music. I just say it's different. Classical music is a whole world of different styles and has a lot more history than modern music. Furthermore, it is played by musicians who have worked years and decades to master their instruments. That's why, when you listen to a 'performance', it's so impressive when you know the amount of work and talent it takes for the musician (or orchestra) to master their instruments. From Bach to modern composers, from solo instruments to full-fledged orchestras, from melodic styles to totally wild experimentations... You have to listen, open your ears, feel and enjoy. Bach is considered mathematical (but for me, he's very emotional), and is seen as the grand-father of all modern music (listen to 'The Well Tempered Keyboard'). Bach has 'discovered' all harmonies possible using your current notation system. Anything you hear today in rock, pop, rap, ... you'll find these harmonies, melodic lines, etc... somewhere into one of Bach's works. You love movies? Listen to 'The Planets' by Gustav Holst and see the relation with 'Star Wars' music. A very interesting introduction to classical music is still the two 'Fantasia' Disney movies. You don't listen to classical music the way you listen to pop/rock/rap or jazz music. Classical music forces you to 'feel and think'. Some rock works relied heavily on using classical composers, some with good results, some not. Emerson, Lake and Palmer orchestrated Mussorgsky's Pictures at an exhibition for rock lovers. I could go on and on.

Whatever, but they don't care about their users at all. If they cared, they wouldn't make something as limited in every way as iOS. I had to install VLC on the iphone, otherwise it was not possible to load the contacts archive to the phone in a normal way.

Lossless through the cable is conceivable.
Lossless over the air, from something as tiny as an iPhone/iPad, never.
Apple cares enough to allow developers to create custom apps for specific needs, for people like you, and then even provides a curated distribution platform to find said apps, and download them, for free! 😉

I have to ask: Why do you need an Apple Music sub for this? This is just classical music, music that is free since classical music is public domain. So why should you need a subscription just to listen to public domain music you can get for free from archive.org?
Utterly wrong. Classical music is subject to the same copyright laws as everything else.

I am extremely excited about this! Being able to find specific recordings of pieces much easier. Being able to learn more about composers and do deep dives. Very cool!

I am wondering about Jazz music, though. Is Jazz something that would benefit from an app like this, or is it more like most modern music in that regard? Hm.....

A good read, for those still sceptical over the need for a separate app.

I agree about the app icon being awful. Hopefully just a placeholder. At least as a separate app, it can be updated at any time, unlike the Music app which is tied to OS updates.

And I trust there will be iPad/Mac/AppleTV versions at some point.

Also wondering if Siri will get smarter about voice requests for classical music, though I rarely use it even now beyond the most elementary of queries.

Ah Siri, the wonderful assistant who sometimes forgets what my wife’s home number is, what her cellphone number is, and sometimes who my wife is. 😄

I wondered about that remark in the posts. What about it is so awful? Surely, it’s no worse than the Music app icon?
I'm okay with the Music app icon. It's fine.

But since when has a treble clef ever had any connotation for 'classical music'? Not that I want it to be a Beethoven head either. The Primephonic icon was much better (a 'P' made from staff lines). A treble clef is just clip art, lazy.

Will this be available in the Mac?
Apple knows?

It was just available to download on iPhone.
To iPad as well, but the app on iPad was only an iPhone app, so not very good for now.
But ok, it will be possible to use on iPad. But really Apple, make a much better app to iPad AND to Mac.
Otherwise it’s no point with this 😐
