Maybe they can make the next AirPods airplay instead of Bluetooth and we can actually appreciate the lossless quality.

If this is anything like the Primephonic app that Apple bought and shut down, I think it very much will! That app had playlists for an "introduction to..." various composers, periods, and instruments, and every track had ways to browse to further tracks with the same composer, performer, or different performances of the same piece. It also had podcast-type recordings interviewing performers about their favorite repertory, IIRC. I really hope they have these features in the new app.
Nice! I would actually love some features like this for jazz as well. Another genre where I know some things I like but would appreciate some guidance. Anybody know any jazz-specific streaming apps out there?

Sadly, that would probably mean you'd get a fraction of the battery life. There have been some rumors about Apple exploring high-bitrate alternatives to Bluetooth. Hopefully one of those will come to fruition.

🤔 Which do you think Apple cares more about, sales of iOS devices or a $450 - $8,800 Thunderbolt audio interface that someone else manufacturers?
Whatever, but they don't care about their users at all. If they cared, they wouldn't make something as limited in every way as iOS. I had to install VLC on the iphone, otherwise it was not possible to load the contacts archive to the phone in a normal way.

Lossless through the cable is conceivable.
Lossless over the air, from something as tiny as an iPhone/iPad, never.

What metadata is missing for pop music that would be useful? Like, are people searching for songs composed by Hillary Lindsey or something?
i think there are some cases where an advanced metadata search would be useful for pop as well . For example, many songs are covers of older songs, but unless you already know it’s a cover , you’ll never be aware of it. But with advanced metadata, anytime you click on a song, you could see who is the original author and what other covers exists for it.

Because the classical people think they're better than the rest of us, and mustn't let their ears accidentally be sullied by our vulgar music.

I'm actually surprised that they'd even stoop so low as an app, lest the digital bits sully their pristine ears unlike their purest and warmest analog vinyl.
😁haha ! Nah…In my case i listen to classical as much as i listen to electronic music, jazz, obscure experimental stuff, rock, etc.. It’s not a snobbism issue. Good music is good music.
Like many people explained here, search is extremely frustrating and confusing when it comes to classical because of the multitude of performers, composers, conductors, soloists, versions, and the dizzying myriad of combinations and permutations between all these parameters. Hence the need for a specific interface and search engine.

Well, that's good to know. A separate subscription would've been criminal on their part.
As a teen I got a friend’s dad’s classical CD collection on loan. It opened my ears. Over time I forgot about it but the fact this is included in my current subscription, and is a separate app, guarantees I’ll give it a try.

The way Apple treats classical albums is ridiculous and I don't expect it to be better than Idagio or comparable dedicated streaming apps. Apple Music sorting in "Composer" view lets Beethoven show up under "L" as it sorts by the first name. I often get in my library the booklet as a separate album from the actual album. Or it provides tracks but than puts part of the tracks into another "album". Need to see reports first before considering this.
Eventually I’ll become known around here for saying this but have you submitted feedback to Apple about this?

If not, please consider it: Apple.com/feedback

You seem a bit late to the party with your, undoubtly well meant, advice. Apple already got tons of feedback and complaints about this.
For what reason do you think Apple purchased Primephonic?

It certainly falls under the genre of modern classical music.
in 2014, my music major trend told me that piece was based on "Clarinet Concerto #1" by i think Stravinsky
nope Copeland they stated, which makes sense.
i never followed up on that

Offhand, AirPods have astonishingly small batteries, and AirPlay runs over WiFi, which uses a lot more power than Bluetooth (as well as needing to use some space for the different antennas and radios) - I don't see AirPlay happening in AirPods any time soon. Besides, you'd have a hard time telling lossless apart from good high-bitrate AAC on the drivers in AirPods.

It's a checkbox lots of people want, because it sounds like a really cool feature, but I sincerely doubt that of those same people could tell the lossless-in-AirPods apart from AAC-in-AirPods in a double-blind test.

On the other hand, Apple execs have mumbled something occasionally about how current Bluetooth audio protocols aren't as good as Apple would like, hinting that Apple may be working on some sort of higher quality solution (different codec or protocol over Bluetooth, possibly).

Apple doesn't pretend to make a solution for everybody. Apparently you find iOS very limited. Apple's philosophy is that it's not for you. Apple is happy to make it for others who do not think iOS is limited in ways that they care about. What can you do? Move on to another system.

Thanks, I find Mac Mini + Android phone (especially if android is rooted) to be a much better combination than Mac Mini + iPhone.

I'm looking forward to this. I never had chance to use Primephonic, but the music apps I have tried do a poor job at presenting classical music and making it easy to discover specific recordings of interest. My main questions are:
  • where will it draw the line as to what is 'classical music'?
  • how will it interoperate with the existing Apple Music app? I want some coordination as I don't want to have to add things twice etc.

I have to ask: Why do you need an Apple Music sub for this? This is just classical music, music that is free since classical music is public domain. So why should you need a subscription just to listen to public domain music you can get for free from archive.org?
It's not a separate subscription than the one for Apple Music. It's just going to be a better way of discovering and finding classical music.

For my purposes, whatever classical music is available in public domain is not good enough. I want better quality and am willing to pay to help support the artists who are trying to make a living at it.
