The Eagles are pop rock? That’s simply a tortured statement meant to maintain your other statement that the list is all pop, which isn’t true. The Eagles aren’t pop. RATM also isn’t pop.

Are those lists usually focused on and dominated by classic rock? If so, it would make sense for Hotel California to fall in the top 20-40.
Pop can be a specific genre or just “popular” music in general. In this case, “popular” music refers to music liked by the masses who can’t read sheet music and don’t know music theory, so it excludes genres like jazz, classical, and even avant-garde music (each of which can also be broken down into sub genres as can pop). It’s like listing the top 100 books for people who can’t read.

Revealing my age here with some of these, but these are five of my favorite artists who I would pick as some of the 'all time best' if I were on the curatorial team:

Joy Division (Unknown Pleasures),
Doves (Lost Souls or The Last Broadcast),
Cocteau Twins (it's impossible for me to pick an absolute favorite),
Gorillaz (Demon Days)
Rosalía (El Mal Querer)
That's an interesting list. With these kind of things it's hard to be objective in terms of distinguishing between "these things are my favourites" and "these things are the greatest"

FWIW I think Joy Division *might* belong in the top 100 - Unknown Pleasures seems to the JD album which people hold in highest regard - even though I prefer Closer.

In no particular order this is my favourite 10:

Glenn Gould - Bach Partitas
Neil Young - After the Goldrush
Kraftwerk - Trans Europe Express
REM - Lifes Rich Pageant
Miles Davis - Porgy and Bess
Dead Kennedys - Fresh Fruit for Rotting Vegetables
Sisters of Mercy - First and Last and Always
New Order - Low Life
Tom Waits - Rain Dogs
The Clash - London Calling

Ask me tomorrow and you'd get a different list :)

In any event, any top 100 *must* include the following artists to be remotely credible IMO:

Miles Davis
John Coltrane
Duke Ellington
Aretha Franklin
Ella Fitzgerald
Billie Holiday
Donna Summer
The Beatles
Velvet Underground
Kraftwerk
Public Enemy
Aphex Twin
Jimi Hendrix
Neil Young
Pixies
Metallica
Prince
The Smiths

This is clearly not an exhaustive list

It’s amazing how many Macrumors readers seem to think that great music suddenly stopped being made after the end of the 1970s. I hate to break it to you all, but there is no reason that a new album couldn’t be released by someone tomorrow that is as good as anyone in your standard list of ‘nobody will ever make music like …….’ artists.

I may be controversial saying this, but I think two of Taylor Swift's albums--RED and Folklore--have a chance to make the list. Unlike other Swift albums, both these albums show the best of Swift's songwriting skills. Folklore especially, considering the circumstances on how it was made.

She’ll be on the list at least once and deservedly so.

A couple of my students from this spring will be quite happy as they identified themselves as proud "Swifties" during introductions during orientation. Unfortunate that celebrity culture seems to muddy judgment of artistic talent (like Beatlemania). Nothing wrong per say mind you, people like what they like.

Indeed, being wildly popular with young people and having talent are not mutually exclusive. The Beatles are perhaps the greatest and most influential band of all time (they absolutely are in my mind). Their combined talent was immense yet when they played Shea Stadium folks couldn’t even hear the music over the screaming teenage girls. Swift is both talented and popular as well and is no flash in the pan either. She’s released music steadily for almost two decades now and has proven staying power. Popularity-wise she’s definitely ‘The Beatles’ of her generation. Talent-wise, well I don’t know that the fab four will ever be topped, but that’s no knock on Swift nor is it exclusive to her. After all, there can only be one GOAT.

I find Folklore quite dull tbh. 1989 is pure pop genius tho. In any event Swift seems to be the closest thing we currently have to the voice of a generation - certainly so for young women. My daughter is obsessed with Taylor Swift (and Billie Eilish for that matter).

Well, Folklore's vibe is VERY different from 1989. But artistically, the critics all say Folklore is a more impactful album in terms of lyricism and storytelling, putting Swift in the same class as Carole King and Joni Mitchell.

The fact that people can argue over which album should be first for inclusion is another clear indication that she deserves a spot and will get at least one. There aren’t exactly a plethora of artists where the choice wouldn’t be obvious. Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Michael Jackson, Van Halen, Elton John, and Green Day are others where arguments could be made over which album of that artist most deserves a spot. That’s good company to be in.

The groups/artists you mentioned all created historically influential albums. Green Day's American Idiot was controversial but was definitely just about the most important album for that band.

It's going to be fun to see which albums make the top 100 list on Apple Music.

Yup and others might say Dookie deserves the first nod haha.

Next 10 are out.

90. AC/DC - Back in Black
89. Lady Gaga - The Fame Monster
88. Nina Simone - I Put a Spell on You
87. Massive Attack - Blue Lines
86. Mary J Blige - My Life
85. Kacey Musgraves - Golden Hour
84. Snoop Dogg - Doggystyle
83. Patti Smith - Horses
82. 50 Cent - Get Rich or Die Tryin’
81. Neil Young - After the Gold Rush

I'm pretty sure this list will (somewhat) mirror other most other mainstream "Best / greatest album" of all time published list.

While there may be a few surprises, I think we can expect to see the standard albums from Prince, Beatles, Johnny Cash, Aretha, Rolling Stones, Bruce Springsteen, Michael Jackson, Bob Marley, Elton John, Loretta Lynn, Stevie Wonder, Miles Davis, Fleetwood Mac, Carole King, etc.

In terms of "newer" artist...it is almost guaranteed to see Adele, Amy Winhouse, Lauryn Hill, Eminem, Outkast, Beyonce on there.

A quick look at Grammy albums of the year / massive sellers or critically acclaimed musical zeitgeist moments is a great indicator of what's going to show up.

Totally true, it’s very hard to say that my favorites aren’t among the best - even if the rest of the world disagrees.

My list was pretty short, as there are a lot more whom I listen to that I think are world-class and among the best, but many artists have only limited audiences and will never break through to be lauded for their work and rate a ‘100 best albums’ moniker.

I like most of the artists on your two lists, with some exceptions. Neil Young, I have never found his music that appealing, nor his voice. Tom Waits is another one whom I sometimes like and sometimes don’t, I have to be in the right mood, though I admit he’s a talented musician and artist.

I would add Johnny Cash as an artist who needs to be included amongst the august 100, along with a South American group, Soda Stereo, who made some truly amazing albums in the late-80s-early90s-early-00’s. The guitarist Andres Segovia is another amazing musician, and is loved worldwide, I think at least one of his should be included.
Other genres:
Galantis
Basement Jaxx (I’m almost always listening to them)
Sigur Ros
Nothing But Thieves
Foals
Royal Blood
The Decemberists
Mumford & Sons
Cat Power
Royksopp
Thievery Corporation

I have to say that I really didn’t want to like her, simply because I didn’t know anything about her other than that I couldn’t avoid hearing her name everywhere. I was lured into her fandom(!) after she sang a duet with Brandon Urie of Panic at the Disco, and I really liked it and thought she was adorable and fun, and has a lovely voice. Then I listened to a few of her albums—and artists who are composers and lyricists rate highly in my book—and I found that she makes some very moving and heartfelt music, along with her beautiful voice. She definitely should have an album on the list—I couldn’t say which one I think is best, as I haven’t listened to all of her work.

Also, even though I do believe in the artist’s vision for an album, I’ll usually have favorites from several different albums. Though if I really do like an artist, I’ll either love the entire album or not love it.

Porcupine Tree are amazing! I haven’t listened to them in a few years, forgot how awesome their music is. Thanks for the reminder!

Sweet! See them live if you can (they just finished a brief tour).

Steven is such an audio perfectionist that their live performances are almost studio quality. It’s a thing to behold (with exceptional songcraft and musicianship to boot).

One more song from another band that I’ll presume most have never heard.

Precision polyrhythms over groove-laden syncopation; ethereal melodies over striking atonality; soaring, layered harmonies and aspiring lyrics woven over insane song structure …

Demands countless listens to be fully understood. I’ve been listening to this song for over 10 years and I still cannot fathom how it was conceived and constructed. Truly one of the most fascinating and most memorable songs I have heard in my entire life. The entire album from which it comes (Altered State) is utter perfection.
