Anyone else having issues with Lossless songs? It stops playing after 15 seconds, the same for all songs/albums that’s lossless. Songs/Albums that’s not marked as lossless plays just fine. Also, sometimes the Lossless indicator shows and sometimes not. Downloading a lossless song/album is working fine though.

I see that high res lossless has been unleashed also, at least to 24/48, unless higher, no way to immediately tell on the app & on pods so don’t get benefit.
I can't get it to work. I'm using a DAC and not getting anything above lossless even though I've enabled all the settings. Overall the implementation of lossless has been a bit of a mess - have to re-download all albums/playlists to new formats. Not (yet) a fan of Dolby Atmos but will keep on testing.

Dolby Atmos is poor on rock and metal tracks, going to turn it off.

Now my question is that as I listen using AirPods Pro Max will there be any point downloading in lossless?
I know the APM don't do it but wondering if it's better (or worse) to listen from an AAC or ALAC download.

Also, I have a lot of matched music that too get lossless I'm going to have to delete and re-add if there is a lossless version on Apple Music. That will take a while to sort out. 🤨

Latest iOS 14.6 is working with Hi-Res lossless and automatically switching sample rate of my Dragonfly DAC. No such luck on macOS Big Sur. I'm sure it'll eventually happen once they add exclusive support etc.

No. iPhone build-in DAC can’t play HiRes songs. You’ll need an external DAC
Not sure this is right. Lossless is 'CD quality' which I think is what is being asked. Wired earphones/headphones will be fine with that. Anything above that (Hi-Res) you will need an external DAC.

Dolby Atmos sounds horrible on loud music or music with lots of sound effects. It sounds better on jazz, classical and other genres where there are a limited number of sound sources mixed in the recording (instruments and/or electronic effects).

The demos on the Dolby website sound much better than anything I've heard on Apple Music so far:

To add to my post...
Is it better to download highest quality and let it downgrade on playback or will it sound better downloading the hi quality lossy?

Lossless != Hi-Res.

Lossless simply means literally no data loss in the compression process. In practice we mean from a source, wherever at source is defined, however it was recorded and sampled. (Red Book CD standard is 16-bit / 44.1 kHz)

"Hi-Res" is higher than the CD standard.

iPhone can decode and DAC output lossless signal up to 24-bit/48 kHz.
Apple's lighting adapter cable has DAC that can do up to 24-bit/48 kHz.

I must be doing something wrong - mine stays green, no amber let alone pink. Any tips?

I might be completely wrong here, but if you’re listening over Bluetooth and turn on lossless aren’t you then just relying on data being discarded probably at random due to the lack of bandwidth?

If that’s true that can’t be good can it? Surely a proper audio codec does a better job at deciding what needs keeping and what doesn’t and so will sound ‘better’ (I know better is subjective when it comes to audio).

Good question. However, no, it should sound a bit better with the lossless. I kept paying for Tidal or Amazon Music HD even though I had Apple Music for this reason. Some devices, like my AirPods Pro, the lossless makes a significant difference for me.

The 256 AAC is very good especially if playing directly on say a smart speaker or Apple TV. However, I found it didn't hold up quite as well when encoded a second time, down to 250 AAC to be sent to AirPods.

When you start out with lossless, the one time encoding when it gets sent to your ears, holds up much better.

You'll have to see what you think.

if you listen in a quiet, calm environment, with your iDevice connected to lighting to very high quality headphones/speakers (possibly with dedicated external DAC in between)... it might be worth it to store a lossless track.

otherwise you are gobbling up tons of storage for nothing. if you are walking around the city listening to wireless earbuds... just pretend the option never existed.

How are you connecting it? I realised on my iPad Pro via USB C to USB A dongle it was staying green as I had a lot of downloaded music so I removed all those and it was streaming up to 96/24. Worked fine on my iPhone with the USB 3 to Lightning adapter too. Maybe a power cycle on both?

Spatial Audio in movies is fantastic.
SA in music is a head scratcher for me. I tried it with 3 different track using my AirPods Pro and all it did was turn down the volume for me.

I played around with Lossless but it’s not worth the extra data usage for me. Meh.

My Apple TV HD doesnt show options to select lossless, come on, I cant believe you need the 4K version for this?!

I have it connected to a hi res home cinema from Sony!

Do I need to buy a new apple tv i dont need for lossless, not even hi res lossless?

Make sure you see the Dolby symbol on Mac Music or "Dolby Atmos" on iPhone. If you don't see that, you're listening to regular stereo.

I don't get that logo in the Music app on my MacBook Air... I enabled Download Dolby Atmos and have set Dolby Atmos to Always On.

Tried streaming the Made for Spatial Audio playlist, also tried downloading a full album that has Dolby Atmos enabled.

Don't know what I'm doing wrong.

Thanks - I'll have a play. I'm using the Dragonfly Red out of the lightning to USB A Apple dongle. Has been working fine with Tidal so I must be doing something wrong.

I agree. They are the only tracks that i've tried it out on so far. While In The End by Linkin Park sounds phenomenal, others such as Last Resort by Papa Roach sound awful. It's like they've completely removed one of the tracks from them, eg the bass. They all sound so flat.

No one’s forcing anything on recordings. There has been a surround re-mixings of music since the days of DVD-Audio.

A user here mentioned Here Comes the Sun (Beatles) remixed in Atmos on AirPods Pro having doubts about the sonic result.

Was it approved by Beatles? If not, it's a forced remix.

The fact that remixing has been done since DVD-A doesn't mean it's a right or correct choice. It's up to the original artist, IMO.

Of course, technology provides tools to retouch/alter any art. I can take the Leonardo's Mona Lisa and make it a copy in acid color hues. That would be my "art", not Leonardo's Mona Lisa 2.0.

Yes it was approved by the remaining Beatles, it was mixed in Atmos when the whole Abbey Road album was remixed from scratch in 2019 by Giles Martin, George Martin's son.

I have the same. Only when both lossless and DA are turned off, it’ll play like it should.
