I still sub to both, personally I use Apple Music. The rest of the family still use Spotify. There's a few things I miss, which is more about the genre of music I listen to.

especially of you continually engange with love/dislike tracks you come across the custom playlists it offers are better.

Off Topic:

Is there a way to do that when listening on HomePod, aside from saying "Hey Siri, I like this song."? One thing that annoys me about HomePod is there is no interface whatsoever on my phone. Sometimes I'd just prefer to interface that way or see a "Now Playing" sort of display.

I've always preferred Apple Music, or rather iTunes with Apple Music. I'm just not that interested in looking for playlists to listen to stuff. I usually have a particular track or album I'm interested in having a look at and Apple Music is better for that. I suspect Spotify is just for people who like to build and exchange playlists so they can listen to music quite casually. Sometimes I'll open up Spotify and have a poke around but I'm not interested enough to start forking out money for it. Perhaps Apple Music just tricked me into paying with that 3 month free subscription they did.

Zune was ahead of it's time in terms of software. That's why I did not own an iPod. The all you can eat model was a good deal for 15 bucks a month. It launched way back in 2006. If the software had more time to mature, it could have really been something great.I used my 80GB with a subscription until I got an iPhone and switched to Spotify. Now I use Apple Music.

You want simplicity?

I would perhaps sign up and get on that subscription if iTunes wasn't so annoying.

It is impossible to search through iTunes music without a gigantic hassle. If you aren't buying into the modern dreck they are pushing, they stifle your ability to find anything unless you have a precise-laser-focus-trigger-phrase search. They won't even RECOMMEND within a genre unless it is new and dumpy. Hidden gems of the past are paved over by popularity and corporate junk.

How many times can I listen to Pink or U2 or (hip, modern, boring, suburban-bland band) before I barf? About once. Maybe less.

Apple has a massive problem in archiving and displaying and presenting of music. Your money masters might lead around the noobs by a nose ring, but I want something fresh from the days of great music and hifi production. Apple Music doesn't help me.

And gramps, here, hates the loudness war, too. Someone, please, stop with compression and let me turn up the volume to hear nuance.
I’ve actually found AM supplied me with plenty of deep cuts and off-the-beaten-path music, and I’ve never had an issue finding anything in the catalog. Are your setup preferences right. If not, make sure you’ve only emphasized, say, classic rock, and then pick a bunch of representative artists. Also, if you haven’t already, delete the categories you don’t want at all. i.e. if you loathe Pop, touch and hold until it goes away completely. Several friends didn’t know that could be done. Once properly configured, my For You playlists have been very good. Also, play with creating radio stations from artists and songs you like and AM will build some pretty good stuff.

It's all those Homepods Apple is selling.

But seriously, both Spotify and Apple Music are very similar in function. Though I like Apple Music more, mostly because of the radio stations and design; I could easily be happy with Spotify and appreciate their being competition.

I think everyone can agree that Google Play Music or whatever google is calling it this week isn't so good.

Just over 2 months out from new iPhones iPads and MacBooks and all this site reports is subscriber numbers and endless beta release stories.. BORING!!!!!!!!!

Can we not have some decent leaks? Or are you all afraid of being sued and closed by Apple?

The background picture is a little self-indulgent. ;) But, other than that, it looks pretty nice. Too bad Microsoft never really seemed to have a plan how the Zune software was to fit into the rest of the Windows media ecosystem. And they've totally lost the plot since then.

Let's face it: it helps when your app is built-in. Most people will try the built-in app first and, when it's good enough, stick with it. Then add all the integrations Apple Music has with Apple's ecosystem (Apple Watch, Apple TV, HomePod, Siri etc.) and an enormous marketing budget, and it's not at all surprising that most people with an iPhone will end up with Apple Music.

Spotify comes ore-installed on most Android phones, at least with Samsung’s and Android is bigger than Apple.

Also Spotify is more vendor neutral, Spotify doesn’t sell hardware... yet... so it comes with Alexa, Google Assistant, Microsoft hardware, Sony hardware (which, with Sony Music owns a piece of Spotify), etc.

If you spend some time playing around with the interface, you can avoid a lot of the dreck.

The problem for me is "Radio." I like to just randomly play similar genre music. Should be easy, no? Hit "radio" when playing "Welcome to the Jungle" and Apple Music should just randomly play late 80's rock and perhaps some heavy metal and grunge. But no.....Apple Music also decided Eminem was somehow supposed to play on this channel ...as well as KRS 1. Even if you hit the "dislike" button, I've found those "disliked" songs continue to show up.

Pandora got this right years ago and its beyond me why Apple hasn't figured this out.

Bullish practices such as the 30% cut for making subscriptions on the App Store (effectively impeding Spotify to acquire customers on the iOS devices) and the inability of Spotify to integrate with Siri start to pay off. Especially in the US where iOS market share is so high.

I hope Europe acts against Apple on these fronts soon. From the US I don't expect much.

You could change the background. I always kept it plain white. ;)

Spotify doesn’t use Apple’s AppStore payments and that CLEARLY doesn’t impede Apple users from using Spotify.

For the rest, that was funny, as if Europe would want any trade wars with the US.

Kind of interesting how it’s like

USA = Apple Music
World = Spotify

USA = iMessage
World = WhatsApp

More like

World = Piracy

This has nothing to do with the different services but Spotify has a five band user adjustable EQ which is very useful. The Apple music app's present EQ settings are too drastic usually making the music sound worse. A little tweaking with the bass when out walking with my Air Pods really improves thinga when outside sounds start eating up the lows.

Serious question: is Apple Music good?

I remember the launch, and it was corrupting people”s music libraries because it was mid-matching songs, functionality was limited, and the interface looked like that overly anemic white space, but that was awhile ago.

But maybe things have changed. Or, is Apple Music growing just because they have prime real estate on our devices? Hoping it’s the former.

So what the word?

That was always BS, it was a paid hit by the crap competitor.

Guess what? People are more interested in real people impressions than on crappy bloggers.

I've tried Apple Music three times and every time I come back to Spotify. I feel like I can't find any good playlists or new music. Spotify is just much better in my experience for its' UI and ability to find new music through playlists people have made for each genre. Being able to 'go to radio' on a song is great too.

You can also 'go to radio' on a song on Apple Music as well. I had Apple Music since it first came out and I have to say i'm very impressed. I listen to a lot of kpop and they have every album imaginable, its super impressive. They're also the first to have all the new kpop albums and American albums as well. I think the way Apple Music algorithm works is you have to listen to the music for a while before you get the best recommendations. Honestly, the albums and songs recommended to me now are exactly what I would listen to, all of them. I think the people that have been disappointed with AM are those that didn't give the platform time to learn their favorites and all that. AM has some really good playlists too especially the workout ones. They have a promo for free 3 months so really try it out and add as many songs you like and set up your profile as detailed as you can and see if you still don't get better recommendations.

Apple's Tunes better increase membership, they are the only market for Apple Speakers.

Am I the only one that feels like I'm on an episode of Sesame Street when I have to say (and so I avoid it), iTunes, Homepod, iPhone,... all those marketing words. UGH.
