I haven't encountered the same issues a lot of you have, but I do hate it when an "upgrade" breaks existing functionality (like Apple completely messing up the Podcasts app in iOS).

For better or worse, Apple has tightened up the system requirements for Sierra, so there are fewer unique configurations for them to support. This may or may not translate into fewer bugs and incompatibilities.

Personally, I am happy with Apple's current update cycle. It is like an annual tradition. Maybe we should bring out the eggnog and sauerkraut each year at that time. :p

Seriously, I have found macOS Sierra to be quite stable on my early 2009 iMac.

As I pointed out in another thread, I'm not really into all the fancy bells and whistles that Apple adds to its OS. For example, I have little use for Siri. I am not much into music or photography. I have little interest in all of the other stuff that Apple constantly promotes as fantastic improvements in its apps and products. In short, I am a basic Mac user, with a pretty much fixed daily routine.

However, all other issues aside, in my view, there are some very good reasons to always upgrade if and when your machine is compatible with the update. Those three big reasons are the following:

  • stability improvements
  • security improvements
  • bug fixes

It is a fact that Apple products increasingly become targets for hackers, botnets, etc., particularly if one has an "always on" Internet connection, such as a cable modem. As such, it pays to keep on top of such things. Upgrading your system when an OS update is released will accomplish exactly that.

In conclusion, upgrading OSes is obviously a very personal choice. Only you can decide, but consider the aforementioned three reasons.
