Apple Named World's Largest Wearables Vendor With an Estimated 3.5M Apple Watch Shipments in Q1 2017

I wear my original Gen 1 just about every day. I love it. I don't use a whole lot of apps, but the ability to push calls to voice mail and read texts and sometimes give quick replies is great. I use it to quickly skim my email. Also, I really like the wrist tap warnings when using Apple maps; it has kept me from missing turns more than once for sure. I didn't get a Gen 2 model but will probably spring for a Gen 3, about the same frequency that I upgrade my iPad.

Yes, and that means plently of future scope for sales.
Apple are now bigger than Rolex in terms of sales, next target Swatch.

Agreed, then LTE will have phone companies pushing and putting on payment plans as to sell the service. First gen people will upgrade and so on.

Still nothing compared to the behemoth the Watch will become in some years.

Apple is in all-in mode, no competitor has the slightest chance to match the kind of applied medical research that will transform a nice gadget into a must have, life saving revolution in health care.

Maybe they'll get lucky and snag Elizabeth Holmes to head up the medical sensor integration. I hear she might be looking for the next great challenge.

Exactly. It takes a lot of speculative R&D money to do what Apple is doing with medical research. Who else has that type of money to bet on?
Nobody.
Certainly not Fitbit or anyone else other medical device manufacturers already in the game.

I own an apple watch Gen 1 but cannot understand how Apple has now achieved the biggest market share. There are no compelling features in the watch that would make me rush and buy Gen 3 when it is eventually released.

"with an estimated 3.5 million Apple Watch shipments"

Shipments, not sales. There may be containers filled with Apple Watches at the button of the ocean because I have seen probably two here in Miami just this year. Nobody is buying that garbage.

I wouldn't say that.... Google is still copyi.. I mean, developing their Android Wear and has the resources to cop.. uh, create a gadget with similar health features as future Apple Watches.

Not for me. I ended up buying a Garmin Fenix 3 HR. The idea of charging my watch everyday was not appealing. Been wearing the Garmin now for a week. Battery is at 74%. Very happy with the watch.

We can only hope that Google and everyone else with the money to target health gets skin in the game. We all win. Competition is the best for everyone. Especially if it helps those suffering from health issues and if new technologies can help.

There are still a lot of people who have NO Apple Watch at all.

That's who will buy the Gen3 Apple Watch. :)

Until those people realize they don't use them either, and also get turned off.

I really hope Apple focuses on Heath sensors for Gen 3, give features that add value, not just a glorified notifier/calorie counter.

Wait. I can send my heart beat to my friends, I can't forget that feature.

Maybe it's just me, but I don't get it. Make the AppleWatch work on both platforms - iOS and Android. Double the opportunity for double the sales. You know like they did with the iPod. I don't understand why they keep it tied to just the iPhone. An AppleWatch does not equal an iPhone sale. It's the other way around. Let Android users play in the AppleWatch sandbox too for dang sake. It's a no brainer. Why does TC not see this? I thought he is a bean counting financial genius.

I've got the 1st gen, the 2nd gen is pretty zippy, I think if the 3rd gen gets another speed boost and a few other features it'll be a no brainer to upgrade to it.

Unless they put in time travel in the watch I see absolutely no reason to ever get a smart watch of any kind, and I can assure you I'm not the only one.
In 96 when I got a phone with built in watch, I took off my wrist watch and rejoiced and there has never been a watch on my arm since.

The sales of a wearable is never gonna catch up to the iPhone. People rather use the phone as a watch, and frankly, this overhyped fad of knowing everything about your training is just ridiculous, and will be gone in just a few years. It's perfectly possible to lead a healthy life without an electronic gadget to tell you how you're doing.

Don't marginalize emojis and stickers. They are the life blood of Apple Watch.

They deserve it. It's classy watch
Looks better today than the day it was released. That's timeless design. Jony hit Apple Watch design out of the park.

You apparently are able to predict the future of the Apple Watch and yet you reminisce about 1996, well, times have changed, literally. YOU see no reason to purchase an Apple Watch and that's fine. But That doesn't dismiss what somebody else might use the Apple Watch for and how it creates productivity in their lifestyle.

I mean, your post basically states that you don't wear watches period, Which why would that be any type of advice for somebody who does wear watches and prefers wearable technology?

And why would the Apple Watch ever have to catch sales of the iPhone? I am pretty sure everybody here knows the Apple Watch will never catch sales of the iPhone that generates Almost 70% of Apple's net revenue. It seems rather silly to try to compare iPhone sales to an Apple Watch, when it's such a niche category.

Nobody "Needs" an Apple Watch to live a healthier lifestyle, but the Watch serves as a motivation tool and a general tracker, which is nice to know where you currently stand with your activity for the day.

The Apple Watch exists to lock users in the iPhone ecosystem. So long as the user continues to use an iPhone, that's more revenue in the form of apps, iCloud storage, Apple Music and assorted accessories.

I believe the Apple Watch will eventually become independent of the iPhone, but that will be several years in the future when the iPhone has reached its nadir.

It's basically following the iPod instruction manual.

Firstly I think Series 2 exists to get new people to buy the Watch, not to make everyone on Gen 1 upgrade. And secondly, Gen 3 hasn't been announced yet! How do you know you don't want it?

Exactly. Even just using the Watch as a health and fitness tracker, I think the aluminium one will be better value than a Fitbit. I know people who own fitbits and the build quality isn't great. They also aren't as 'small and light' as people claim, despite only tracking fitness.

It's like when people buy £300 Windows laptops. Great at first but they don't serve so well over time. Then there are friends who still use MacBook Pros from 2011.

I am going to wait a little longer, maybe until version 5 to see what Apple does. What I go back to, I did just fine without it, why would I necessarily want it now? Not mention, the fitness marketing is a recent change in strategy. It was originally a fashion accessory, with a confusing ui and gimmicky features. I do see a bunch of fat people wearing it, but I don't think its necessarily helping with weight loss or encouraging regular activity.

Does anyone else completely detest the term "wearables"? How idiot and undescriptive is that? Wearable? Like a hat? Pants? Coat? Pretty sure my shoe laces are "wearable". I refuse to use that word to describe things like Apple Watch etc.

Of the Apple-geeks I know, less than 10 has gotten the watch, and most of them are like "yeah, cool gadget, but...", none, afaik is interested in upgrading.
People who are into watches scoffs at a digital toy, so the "watch crowd" is not the target group and never will be.

I remember when the iPad came out, at every meeting, people were taking notes on their iPad (or at least trying to) because this was the way forward, computers were soooo yesterday. Now, I can't remember when I saw an iPad at a meeting. Most people gave them to their children to play games, I know I did.
In 2011 people were desperate to find funds to order an iPad and we distributed so many (work at uni). Now, we order less than one a year, nobody cares.

Now, everybody needs to track their training for some reason, and they absolutely need to have notifications on their wrist. I give it a year or 2, then most watches will be in a drawer.

The iPhone was a gamechanger, the iPad and the watch not so. Sure they'll sell loads of them, but not like the iPhone, nowhere near.
I've said it before and say it again: I think all companies are throwing stuff at the wall to see what sticks, everybody wants to have that new iPhone that reinvents a segment. So far, no one has succeeded. The watch is not the answer.
