Because this isn't supposed to be a big update like Panther and Tiger were. It's just an optimized version of Leopard for Intel machines. Why waste a good single syllable name for something that just barely makes changes or adds features to consumers. Most of the new features are for developers.

Is not single syllable. Ti-gher Pan-thar Leo-perd For-gev-her

I'm thinking that they'll announce new MacBooks and MBPs shipping in a month; Snow Leopard preinstalled.

It's Intel only.

Source? Sounds like nothing but more of the same speculation we've had for months. Thanks, but I can make wild guesses just as well as anyone else, I was asking if there was anything concrete that I had missed.

It's been leaked that the file size of most built-in applications in Snow Leopard have been dramatically reduced. There are only so many ways to accomplish that. A relatively easy way would be to remove PPC code.

And shortly after that was leaked, it was revealed that all those smaller apps did have the PPC code (which omitting saves very little space) and instead left out all the foreign language translations (which saves exactly the amount of space that was saved). Thanks for playing.

As long as it works...

I still don't know why they recycled the name. it sounds so bad... everything to this point has been mono syllable names, why change it. they might as well as called it long horn. ha ha just kidding... but seriously, why go from leopard to snow leopard? I'm sure there are still a few single named cats out there. What's next Pantera Leo?

I don't really care how they name it. As long as it works well for me. And also, I don't really care about how it looks, it already looks better than Windows. All I care is performance and quality.

I still think they'll hold it until after Windows 7 is released.

Past Mac OS X release dates:

Public Beta, September 13, 2000
10.0 Cheetah, March 24, 2001
10.1 Puma, September 25, 2001
10.2 Jaguar, August 23, 2002
10.3 Panther, October 24, 2003
10.4 Tiger, April 29, 2005
10.5 Leopard, October 26, 2007

According to Paul Thurrott, Microsoft pushed back the release date of Windows 7 a week from the 15th to the 22nd of October.

Do they know something? Who knows, but it's a sure bet they won't release their new operating system within the same week due to media coverage.

If I was Apple I would release it in late August to get the Back to School crowd or early November to have the "newest" operating system.

My prediction: SL will ship towards the end of 2009. This is a WWDC all about iPhone, unfortunately.

to all those people wanting the 'marble' interface, basically u want a new theme though i cant understand y its so important... they've already added more functionality. multilevel stacks n stuff, more quicklook, high q icons... i doubt they'll change the ui much more. maybe just a new wallpaper would b all the changes the bring, or i think they'll also make the dock look slightly better. ad please to ppl who think marble can delay things. cmon its just something so cosmetic. apple doesnt even take it seriously (hence no themes!)

Part of the reason I use a Mac is because of how slick and nice the interface is. I work long hours and then when I am home I also work long hours on side projects. Spending the amount of time I do in front of a machine, I want the interface to look good.

I couldn't get excited about work using a Windows box. Its so dreadful and reduces my productivity greatly.

I use Coda, not because it is the best editor for PHP ... but because its the best interface for my needs and does almost everything I need.

UI is a very very big deal to for me. I can not use a very ugly interface. I have stopped using products before because of interface.

Both of these cars http://lkp.cc/4BB5j http://lkp.cc/4BC03 serve the same purpose, they get you front point A to point B. Now you see where I am going with this ?

Apple takes interface very seriously. I hope you were joking saying they don't. Although Leopard does have a lot that doesn't totally match from application to application, most of the interfaces are very well thought out. Very smooth and very easy on the eyes.

Apple doesn't support themes because they don't enjoy someone coming along and taking a **** on their interface. There was a few really nice interfaces for jail broken iPhones, but 95% of those interfaces were total crap and made the phone look down right awful.

Apple wants you to be able to walk over to any Mac and feel comfortable using it. Go check out 10 peoples PCs. Sure, they can customize the crap out of it ... using downright awful fonts and icons that make no sense. For example, the people who will replace all system icons with icons from their favorite TV show. Apple wouldn't want someone to see that and go, oh crap what the hell is this ?!

I still don't know why they recycled the name. it sounds so bad... everything to this point has been mono syllable names, why change it.

I don't know how to say this gently, but Cheetah, Puma, Jaguar, Panther, Tiger, and Leopard all have more than one syllable.

10.5 Leopard, October 26, 2007

It's really cool to see all these dates in easy order. Why isn't the OS in the buyers guide? Maybe I am just a weirdo, but I love seeing the progression of things.

Indeed. When are those people over there going to learn to speak proper English? :D

Don't get me started on you lot :p I have enough of an issue with American companies (Apple!!) giving language options as:

English
International English

Err... you're the non-national ones ;) :D

It's Intel only. Why would Apple spend time optimizing for a now defunct platform? I actually won't be surprised if some of its features are 64-bit only, leaving out the first generation Intel machines (Core Duo/Solo).

It's been leaked that the file size of most built-in applications in Snow Leopard have been dramatically reduced. There are only so many ways to accomplish that. A relatively easy way would be to remove PPC code.

Agreed. I hope it's 64 bit only, too.

I am so sick and tired of having to explain to my customers about the difference between 64 bit and 32 bit cpus and operating systems. At least I don't have to explain to my Apple customers the 93 different versions of that steaming pile of Vista. :D

i would suggest september when intel release new 32nm mobile CPUs, new OS X and new multi core processors to take it.

and september beats 7 available date and gives enough fine tuning based on input from developers...

I still think they'll hold it until after Windows 7 is released.

With MicroSoft's track record, I'll give Win7 a try after SP1 or SP2.:p

I'm ready for Snow Leopard now. If the promises are true, my machine will be faster just from upgrading the OS. And there are several programs I'm interested in that requires Leopard. (Still using Tiger here.)

Please be bug-free, although at this point, I'll take anything over Leopard Server.

Please be bug-free, and not the public Beta that was Leopard at launch.

Please be bug-free, and demonstrate that Apple has paid as much attention to its OS as it has the iPhone.

Generally speaking you have to wait until the 2nd update for any given operating system before most bugs are ironed out. That means OS X 10.x.2 or Windows SP2. Seems to be the magic update that most major OS upgrades require before things are smooth sailing. Anyone getting in on a .0 or .1 version of any major OS X update needs to be ready for a little unpredictability.

Ha!!
Over here Leopard = Le-oh-pard :D

In the U.S. South, it's "lay-uh-perd."

And I'm only slightly exaggerating.

e've heard no further evidence, however, of the rumored "Marble" interface that was said to be part of the final Snow Leopard release.
This might mean "Marble" is delayed until 10.7? I wonder if Resolution Independence will make its way to Snow Leopard or if it too will first come in 10.7.
