i agree... the pre is just a prototype at this point. and i think competition will be good for apple. i would like to see some improvements to the iphone, and hopefully with more competition, we'll see some soon.

Why not listen to people and give them what they want.

I see this nonsense all the time. What people claim they want, what can be manufactured at reasonable cost and time-to-market, and what people will actually pay enough for in sufficient numbers to make this a good business, are completely different things.

Start a company. Put all your own money in it. Try to manufacture cell phones that give people what they say they want. After you go bankrupt, get an MBA degree to learn how difficult it is to not go bankrupt, and maybe actually turn a profit, as Apple appears to be doing.

(e.g. check Apple's quarterly income and compare against Palm's. Which company is being smarter about staying in business? )

I believe that just as Mac computers haven't been the bestselling, but that they've always had a niche, that iPhone will also always have a niche market.

Macs seem less prone to viruses (cause viruses are usually aimed at the system with the most users I'd guess), and if Android becomes the 'Windows system' for cellphones, then I'x imagine they as well will be the target of most viruses. I'm no virus expert, it's just my guess.

What I would like to see is the calendar and notification system opened up to developers, cause while the Native iPhone apps (most of them anyways) look great, they don't have the functionality of some of the apps that especially now are making their way to the app store. If an app like Daylite Touch could access the iPhone calendar or the notification system, then that would make the iPhone that much more appealing to everyone.

The feature I miss most is copy and paste. I hope Apple gets that out soon.

All this Palm Pre stuff shows you that how quickly things can change.

Apple have to react in a big way now. They can't go on in this almost condescending manner of drip feeding features like they are giving a few crumbs out to a starving man.

I don't think just increasing the MP on the camera or a memory upgrade is going to cut it now (What I think they were planning for the next iphone).

Why not listen to people and give them what they want. Yes the iphone is a gorgeous brilliant revolutionary gadget but apple have been so arrogant with this "we know best" attitude. No you can't have voice turn by turn GPS (why not even a cheap Nokia has it-what makes apple so special?) a decent camera, a front camera for video calls, copy and paste, more than 9 pages of crappy fart apps, more than one fart app running at a time, an office suite.

Maybe they do know best but I hope they really give us something to be excited about with the next iphone. The mobile phone market is so fickle. One days fashion is tomorrows "oh dear what were we thinking wearing that"

hmmm, maybe you should buy a pre? Oh wait, it's not available yet. Nevermind.

Watch some TV once in a while... somebody passing gas seems to be hilarious! That's part of the "American" culture! I don't have any of them but hey, the iPhone is popular, right? People want to make iPhone "killers" to get some of their revenue. iFart Mobile wouldn't be allowed in the App Store at first and made news because they were blocked. People clamor for what they're not allowed to have, so once it became available, people flocked to it... it hit top 10 status near holiday time and people historically buy lots of what first meets their eye... fart jokes in any shape or form have been annoying before they were apps. I've been tired of the fart jokes on TV and what-not. Not sure why you posted that in this thread, I'd think you were better than that.

Just kidding, I don't think you're better at much of anything, lol! Apple tends to have a far reaching outlook on their product. They have a niche with the iPhone, one that won't be easily eroded by Palm Pre. With IPhone Nano rumors swirling, and whatever else may be coupled in the 3.0 firmware upgrade and or new iPhone hardware will have more than 50% (in my opinion) of current owners clamoring to get the new hardware. It'll have a bump in storage, I'd assume, plus refined speaker volume, etc. We'll hopefully be surprised with push notification, copy and paste, A2DP and MMS! I personally am fine without all of those.
Palm Pre also has to deal with being on the Sprint network for the time being. They're not the top player and won't be any time soon. Verizon Wireless may be getting an iPhone if the contract with AT&T truly expires this year as has been hinted at. (we don't really know how long it runs for) AND, a $99 iPhone in any form would stretch the lead that they're enjoying. Apple will keep doing what it's been doing which is innovating, stretching their lead and making lots of money!

I've never actually wanted fart apps on the app store, so the fact that they're there now still bothers me, but I know that I do not have to buy them, so it's all good. Kids can play their little games and farts, but it sucks to have the store being flooded with CRAP (literally sometimes). Hehe.

it bothers me too but think about this: the internet/ windows/ Mac OS probably has many fart apps available too, does that mean the devices suck?

I never said the iPhone sucked. It just sucks that Apple has the ability to accept or deny any of the apps for any reason and they choose to let the fart and burp apps in... it makes Apple look bad in my opinion. Apple can't control what's on the internet but, they can control what's on iTunes.

I would settle for the simple stuff Apple could give us now.

1) Copy and Paste.

2) How about letting me change my email tone?

3) How about having iTunes synch with Google Calendar? It can sync to Google contacts already.

You know, the simple stuff that would make the phone kick butt. FOR ME.

It is all about perspective...

Right, and when Apple denies entries to the App Store, then people on here and the blogs go crazy about the censorship. So basically, Apple can't win.

As a side note: I was not one of the people complaining about the stuff Apple was rejecting. ;)

More than 9 pages: I doubt there are a lot of people pushing it. If so, they need to check and see what apps they really need.

Why restrict this though? As long as the phone has storage space, the storage should determine how many pages you can have. Its stupid, just like call history, it only goes back about 20 calls. makes no sense.

Yeah, makes you wonder, doesn't it? :)

Apple probably has written requirements for UI features. Anything that might tax the brains of their "normal customer" would have to be limited.

So... my semi-facetious question is... who is this normal customer model based on, and why can't that person handle more than nine home pages, twenty calls, etc? And remember the small limit on saving text messages back in the beginning? Who thought up that one? Obviously not someone who got a lot of texts! *grin*

(Actually, we have the same problem with our handheld apps at work: the text size must be large enough for old guys - like me - to easily read. This limits the amount of data on a screen, alas.)

Probably their idea of a "normal customer" was brought up by surveys? Statistics or research maybe? I'm not sure, but yes that was odd to limit the text messages in the beginning.

I'm always happy when an update comes, of course I'd be happier if the update really contains the ones we requested the most.

I think it is probably a simple explanation. Only 9 dots fit at the bottom of the home screen in a manner that the designers feel is aesthetically pleasing. Adding more pages would require more of a change to the home screen than they were willing to tackle to this point.

The bottom line is that as long as other cell phone makers are trying to compete with / catch up to the iPhone, Apple is winning. No one is making revolutionary phones, they're just trying to make an iPhone killer by taking the basic design of the iPhone and "improving" it. People aren't devoting research and development dollars to creating new designs, they're just making iPhone competitors. Apple wins as long as that continues to happen.

Apple needs to continue to innovate (of course), but not with the urgency the OP suggests. The Pre won't be out for up to another 6 months (or longer if the typical delays occur). It looks great, but no one has been able to really test it yet. How stable is the OS? How good is the battery life? How solid are the syncing functions? All critical questions that are quite a ways off from being answered.

And while the Pre does add some functions on paper that Apple has denied us, don't forget that the iPhone rules when it comes to apps. I don't see any way at all that the Pre could even come close to this same level of support, even a year after it launches. And the Pre doesn't have 3D capabilities, so no 3D games or anything like that.

The Pre appears to be a great phone. Apple should be a little concerned. But Palm has a long road ahead to develop this into a true iPhone killer.

Apple has a pretty loyal fanbase. Some people might switch phones (me included) if Apple doesn't answer some questions but majority will stick with Apple....hence Apple won't really 'feel' any loses

Did anyone else laugh when reading the thread title?

I chuckle myself anytime someone on this site predicts doom and gloom for apple because of a new product or feature. Apple doesn't do reactionary products, and it always seems to work out fine.

Thats not to say they won't update, but it sure as hell wont be because of something else, it will be the update theyve been planning all along.

The Wall Street Journal is written at an 11th grade level. You know, 16 year-olds.

Prototype? LOL I highly doubt it is. Second just about every tech columnist, mag, rag, blogger, major papers, major news networks are all praising the Palm Pre as the next best thing. Easily surpassing the iPhone.

The Palm Pre looks like its going to be a huge winner and will kill off the iPhone when its released.

Apple barely did squat for the OS, UI and core apps for the iPhone for 16 months since release. Can't even get PUSH released on time. Palm has all the features surpassing the iPhone.

Based on the rate of development from Apple, its now the iPhones turn to try and catch up. Won't be able to since competition has quickly caught on.

The Palm Pre looks like its going to be a huge winner and will kill off the iPhone when its released.

One analyst predicted that Palm will be able to sell around 0.5 million units the first year. At less than 5% of Apple's current installed base (which is growing), that's more like a flea bite than a killing.

And if you were an iPhone developer, would you want to write apps for a 20X smaller potential customer base?
