I don't use android devices but the reviews of the 6 on youtube eVEN with 8.02
are saying its the best phone, period.
Maybe that is a bit over the top but its as you said, 8.02 is far from unusable.

Yeah it's been totally fine for me. There is obviously some optimisation that is always welcome but compared to 7.0 it is a dream. It feels almost the same as 7.1.2 to me apart from some areas, mainly safari on the iPad. Nothing major and a pretty trouble free upgrade for me, ignoring the epic fail that was 8.0.1.
8.1 will bring the Polish in the smaller details that Apple lately seem to ignore during the .0 releases.

Wrong. I have praised Apple wherever necessary. If a random guy on internet says he has zero lag while my iPad Safari becomes a sideshow, there is definitely some inconsistency somewhere. Why do 2 people have exactly opposite experience when they have exact same hardware? The weak link is software if we assume both are telling the truth.

I agree completely. Software would be to blame, assuming equal hardware. One factor that deserves mentioning is that some people are overly sensitive to perceived lag, and other people might not even notice lag using iOS 4 on the iPhone 3G.

So we can conclude that iOS 8 is inconsistent and therefore needs work. There are plenty of members who imply that "iOS 8 rulez! It's da smoothest eva! Since I have no problemz, you uzin it wrong!" They simply fail to acknowledge.

I don't see anybody denying that other people have issues. I do see plenty of people pointing out that not everybody has issues. When somebody makes a statement such as "iOS 8 is a buggy piece of crap", it's completely understandable that somebody else would add to that by pointing out their positive experience with the software. iOS 8 is neither perfect nor awful- the truth is in the middle, just like it is with every version of iOS.

That said, I wholeheartedly agree with you when you say that iOS 8 needs work. 8.1 should be a huge step in the right direction.

Btw, Apple themselves know about the insane number of problems with their software and are releasing betas like crazy. So quickly we are at 8.1 while going to 7.1 took 4-5 months.

What more proof do you need?

And it's great that Apple is fixing the bugs in iOS 8. There are plenty of bugs, but the reactions to those bugs around here can be borderline ridiculous. You know, "Jobs would never let this happen", "Looks like my next phone is an Android!", and things like that.

You know what I did when 8.0.1 killed my Touch ID and cell service? I was unhappy about it, but I went on with my life until I could use a computer, fixed it with iTunes, and went on with my life yet again. There are absolutely zero excuses for such a release to ever see the light of the day, for sure. But why sit here and whine about it when I was able to fix the issue- and even if I wasn't able to, relief was only a day away? It's over and done with now. It's good that Apple has customers that hold them accountable, but there are less obnoxious ways of going about that than the hyperbole I often see on this site.

.......

- iOS performance worsens each year, even on the high-end models
- Android performance increases every year, and runs perfectly fine on low-end hardware

.......

Just buy an Android phone and get it over with this kind of threads, and no, the performance of iOS is not downhill like you say.

My 5S is already at that point. You clearly see it skip frames, and I've had to reset it(hard reset from the computer) twice now because it keeps freezing. Yesterday, my home button just stopped working, no matter how many times I hit it, the phone wouldn't go back to the home screen. An iTunes reset fixed it. If this keeps up, I will have no problem switching to Android. The reason I liked iOS was because it was smooth, and hassle free. I have my eyes on a Galaxy Note 4, if Apple doesn't clean up it's act, I'm gone.

Better get that Galaxy Note 4 before it is banned from sale in the US... Samsung is in court again for stealing other's hard work.

Well, yes it is. That's why I made this thread. I've been in the iPhone game since the very first iPhone 2G, I think I'm qualified to judge. For the extremely high price I have to pay for an iPhone, I don't expect buggy and laggy software.

OP, I'm going to take a guess that you didn't setup your phone as "new"? That you transferred over all your old apps/photos/music/videos? My iPhone 6 ran a little slow in the beginning when I was first restoring my settings, photos, and apps. Keyboard seemed to lag. Safari web pages lagged. And for about a week, it was like that. 8.0.2 didn't fix it.

But in trying to fix this annoying accelerometer problem (screen wasn't orienting), I ended up resetting my phone a few times and the lag seems to have cleared up. I don't have any way of objectively assessing this, but I no longer have any complaints about the general OS performance. Not sure if it was the resetting of the phone, or also because a lot of the apps seemed to have been updated in the past week.

Another thought is that Spotlight searches a lot more stuff now, and I think there was indexing going on in the background. That may have taken longer than I expected. Also, since Apple is allowing a lot more 'deeper' access to the OS, you may have some apps that are syncing or indexing data (contacts/photos/messages, etc, etc).

In any case, try resetting your phone or restarting. Give it at least a week or two, update all your apps and see if it's still laggy.
I did this. The difference is about zero. It hasn't got anything to do with backups, it's really the software.

The OP is correct from my user experience. I've have nothing but bad experiences with iOS 8 on my devices. I am very disappointed with it.

Classic proof of this is when playing an album on iPad and rotations the screen, lag. Opening Notification Center and control center on the iPad lock screen. Lags to about 10 fps.

I've mentioned this a ton on other threads but a lot of this has to do with the blurring effect they clearly haven't optimized since that's where a lot of the interface glitches happen.

iOS 8 was initially laggy for me (iPhone 5), but after a few hours it settled down. There was app updates going on in the background, and probably some indexing/optimising too.

It's not as smooth as iOS 6 was, but it's around the same as iOS 7. The animations in iOS 7/8 are the main issue for me. It's not performance related, it's that you can't tap or do anything until an animation has finished, which makes the whole OS feel sluggish.

Yosemite runs incredibly well on my 2011 MacBook Pro. Why can't Apple make the effort to get iOS to run well on older devices? I'm not after all the fancy new features with each iOS iteration, but I'd like my phone to not get slower and slower. My iPhone 3G was a piece of crap by the time it received it's final iOS updates from Apple. My iPhone 4 was really bad too.

Sometimes no matter how many people and how much money you throw at something you can't get the effects you are looking for without the time.

I feel like iOS has gotten to that point. A yearly update to run on the various hardware out there to what people have come to expect is out of the question. Its a shame to because Apple has control of the hardware.

Be nice to see iOS 8.x be the next iOS with all focus on refinements and bug fixing maybe a couple additional features for the iPhone 6S or something.

Well, I had the iPhone since the 3G, and I can tell you that the performance has always been better than the previous iPhone.

Listen, if you don't like something, don't use it, nobody is forcing you, right?

Technology will never be perfect, but for me, the best out there is the iPhone, just try all the brands and different softwares and just stick to the one that you think is the best phone.

No, that's definitely not what he is talking about. You think he can't notice the difference between a slow but smooth animation in 60 FPS, compared to choppy frames that drop in the weather app when you tap the list view and then pick the detailed view?

No mate, iOS 8 is atm a buggy release with several instances where the smoothness is gone and replaced by frames dropping, severely. That should not happen on a 5S and apparently it's happening on the 6 which is unacceptable.

As much as I'm a fanboy, I do have to agree that iOS's visual performance has significantly degraded after advancing into iOS 7 and beyond.

I remember having a 4S on iOS 5. It was fast. Then I had a 5 on iOS 6. Oh boy, everything ran on steroids and 120 fps.

Then I updated to iOS 7. Even with 7.1 there were still some hiccups. "Old device" I figured. But even after I got a 5S there were still hiccups here, there and everywhere!

In fact, I wouldn't even be angry if iOS 9 brought "Metal-powered UI animations at SIXTY(!) frames per second". At least then we could finally get back on track.

It seems to me that Apple's management is a serious bottleneck for accomplishing anything much. Not that it's bad for Apple to branch out in every direction, but sometimes you get the feeling that it's just 11 persons around a coffee table, rather than a company with more cash than the US government.

Im happy with iOS 8 on my iPhone 5, its just my iPad Air thats glitchy with iOS 8. I would be happier if iOS 9 was to skimp on the features and really go after performance instead.
