I've owned everything from late 90's to 2015's; so a broad base to compare; and a family member owns a current one. I am not impressed by them anymore; they're good but for the price I question the value over other brands.
Good start, except you said "they are not as good as they were and the rest of the world has caught up in many ways". 2015 was six years ago, therefore you can't speak for newer models in terms of them being as good as they once were. Now, how many Hyundai's have you owned, and what year/s?

Definitely a good partnership. Look at Genesis, their luxury branch. I could definitely see apple rework the design and put their logo on it

“Apple Car” reminds me of the overpriced “Harley Davidson” re-badged crappy radios I used to see on Home Shopping Network.

If you honestly think that Hyundai makes quality vehicles, then you have no idea what quality is, with all due respect. Those cars are rattling, plastic-y pieces of trash compared to a Mercedes, any Mercedes. This is not subjective, this is fact. Asian and American vehicles cannot compare to German vehicles when it comes to build quality alone. I'd rather buy American, but they are junk by comparison. Nothing in heaven or on earth would ever get me to buy an Apple car that has anything to do with Hyundai.
You don't seem to actually know the meaning of that word, "facts". I say that because nothing you've written is, in fact, a fact. It's entirely subjective and simply you're opinion. Which should not be confused with actual facts. Actual facts would be something along lines of the last time Merc beat Hyundai in vehicle reliability was 2017 and it was close even then. Hyundai beat them in 2018, 2019, and 2020. So you have one brand that has steadily dropped, Merc. You have another that has steadily risen and surpassed the former. You don't have to rely on JD Power either. It's fairly consensus evidence.

Four years of info. Classic. Mercedes builds higher quality vehicles than Hyundai, that is fact. If you disagree, you have zero knowledge of what is going into these vehicles. When did I mention reliability? I have been speaking on quality for quite some time now. Again, let me point you here: https://www.autoblog.com/2020/10/26/hyundai-kia-loss-engine-quality-issues/

What a quarter they recently had! 🤣 Better reliability in 2020 you say? Right.

From the article: "The years-long quality problems have cost Hyundai and Kia nearly $5 billion and left the pair subject to a probe by U.S. authorities over the manner of their recalls."

You Hyundai lovers clearly do not know that of which you speak, and it is showing.

Got to hand it to Hyundai. SK continues to be a very innovative and technologically aggressive country. Hyundai has continually improved their cars and gone from a low tier brand to high quality. My guess is they will soon release a high tier brand like Lexus or Infinity. It will be that high end that Apple will use.

They already have one - Genesis.

Mercedes really aren't that good when it comes to engineering - that's why BMWs are almost always lighter with better handling than equivalent Mercedes models. Mercedes today trades off the rapidly fading whiff of prestige the brand still holds for the over 50s. Generally speaking Japanese/ South Korean cars are some of the best engineered you can buy. If you want mechanical reliability you don't buy German [anymore].
Reliability rankings seem to agree. Hyundai/Kia fare better than BMW or Mercedes.

I would have expected Porsche since their attention to detail would align with Apple....but not Hyundai. If they're going with the lowest bidder then it would be nothing compelling for me to move away from Tesla.

Excellent rankings from reliable sources.

"We sincerely apologize to our shareholders and investors for having repeated quality cost issues over three quarters since 2018," an executive told an earnings briefing."

Yup, it's become pretty conventional wisdom at this point. I'm sure Apple had their pick of partners for this project so I would take that as a further vote of confidence.
Yup, Hyundai leading the way in quality 🤣

Hmm, you just sold your Hyundai for a Mercedes by any chance? You seem rather fixated with this 😂

Sigh. It's sad to read so many people who don't understand the significance of this potential partnership.

This is a potential partnership with one of the largest electronics and auto manufacturing corporations IN THE WORLD. This is not a potential deal limited to buying a fleet of Hyundais, swapping out interior options and installing an advanced version of CarPlay.

Assuming that an Apple Car built in partnership with Hyundai will result in a 1990s era rice rocket is ridiculous. Samsung produced Notes a few years back that would spontaneously combust. Did that mean the iPhone displays Apple bought from them were also going to fail? Did that mean iPhones with Samsung screens have subpar build quality? Of course not. "Designed in CA" is a real thing.

Does anyone here think a Mac with an Intel chip is no different than some crappy machine from HP or Compaq with the same Intel chip? C'mon man.

...engine quality issues. Does Hyundai even make their own engines??

It feels like all the people laughing and Hyundai haven’t been paying attention to the car market since the early 90’s when they *were* crap.

Kona and Niro outsell BMW and Tesla in Europe. Tesla is not even in the Top 10 EVs.

you think any Apple Car would be an ICE car?

I would LOVE to see Apple do a world car as an EV. Tesla will remain so far away from that, and that’s what‘s needed. Renault is the leader in that right now.

Actually, I have family members with later models that've driven so my experience is rather current. I've also know a number of MB owners who share my opinion on the relative quality of MB vs other makes. And "the rest of the world" is more than just Hyundai; which you seem to be fixated on.

As for Mercedes, its 2019 JD Powers reliability rating is 134 just above the industry average of 136:

Lexus ranks highest in overall vehicle dependability among all brands, with a score of 106 PP100. This is the eighth consecutive year Lexus ranks highest. Porsche and Toyota rank second in a tie with 108 PP100 each. Chevrolet and Buick round out the top five.

Hyundai was at 128, btw.

Going by the other Apple products then it will be:
- Minimalist (like a Tesla 3)
- Stylish (unlike a Tesla 3)
- Take design cues from other products (eg the digital crown)
- Car play integration (natch)
- Apps ecosystem for the iPad Pro that is likely in the middle of the console (CarOS)
- Face ID/Apple Watch unlock
- Innovative industrial design, e.g. 100% scratch proof ceramic coating or something equally as mad
- Limit you in some way that is annoying to a small group but massively convenient to 99.9% of owners
- Made in huge volumes in the Far East (Hyundai makes sense - high quality manufacturing, but dull design)
- Limited options
- Made to be unserviceable in some crazy way (swap it for a replacement if it breaks)
- Proprietary charging infrastructure (Apple would have the reach/bandwidth/logistics/money to roll out a dedicated charging network and they do like to own the vertical these days)

...and...

- Bloody expensive and you need to wait for iteration 3 before it is worth considering properly! ;)
