I'm currently nearing the end of a free trial of News+ thanks an iPad Pro purchase. This is a step in the right direction but there's a long way to go. My suggestions in case the News+ team reads these comments:

1. It's understandable that Apple started with legacy media for News+ but does anyone under the age of 65 consume legacy media? Apple should add alternative and B2B media to News+, especially publications that are behind a paywall.

2. The Stocks app should let you choose your sources. This should include primary sources like SEC filings, earnings calls, analyst reports, etc. The Stocks app should also expand its coverage of crypto.

3. Ideally, sources that you could choose would include social media but those companies might not grant a license except perhaps Reddit. Instead, News+ should include a social network of its own. News+ subscribers would get special tools and perhaps might be the only people permitted to post.

Seems odd, but they have to provide more value…
I had a free trial and did not find the News app worthy for me, YMMV

I enjoyed free trial but felt it was a bit pricey for how much time I have to just read the news

I think it is good value for the number of single subscription it can replace

….

As I was composing this I went to check the price again and low and behold, another free month trial

Now just let me mix and match items in my Apple One subscription. I’ll drop Arcade for News+.

For sure

I pay for Apple Music and sometimes Apple TV

if I could bundle those with Apple News they might get me

I have no need of Apple Arcade or cloud storage

I can’t tell if the Apple News app is bizarre because of the design or because of the news. It does seem very odd to not be able to pick what you’re interested in and even odder to not be able to delete whatever Special Coverage they’re featuring.

You can. The UI is kinda crummy but you can configure that (mostly)

Tried Apple News for three months with a free trial, cancelled it after two. The negativity and gross sensationalism of the articles that were constantly recommended and plastered on my lock screen were beyond disgusting.
Why the algo thinks I really wanted to learn about a mother and three small children getting brutally murdered by their estranged father while I am literally at my youngest's birthday party is beyond me, but that service is broken and guilty of the worst sort of click farming.

Why not just break Recipes out to its own app? It seems a bit odd to merge news and recipes together... "breaking news: a city-killer asteroid has an 11.7% chance of striking Earth next month... and here's a recipe to some delicious, quick & easy snacks to enjoy while watching the fiery show." ;)

Curated content is fine and all but this seems like it should be its own app to me. Else, why don't we just fold Music & podcasts into this too... maybe movie trailers... tax prep software... todo lists... etc.

There is always a tension about these things. I understand the “Food” section in News because this is a common lifestyle feature in most newspapers. It also makes sense because periodicals like Food & Wine and Bon Appétit are featured. I could do without web-based homecook-recipe sites like All Recipes being featured. Search for recipes on Google is quite useless because of the prevalence of home cooks whose taste buds function primarily as texture detectors.

Oh! Intriguing. How do you delete the Special Coverage part?
Go into settings.app. select news.app Go down to today feed, restrict stories in today. Special coverage might show up in some other tabs, but its gone on the today tab. :)

Can you remove/block sources and topics yet without leaving big blank squares on the main page?

That alone drove me off the app. Annoying as heck.

You can switch to only news from channels you follow. No empty squares. I also don’t get a bunch of filler from publications I don’t know or care about.

Yeah I’ve been building my own recipe book with custom images in the notes app for a decade….glad Apple is “figuring this out” now for everyone else.

I would like to see this app in Europe / Portugal but unlike other techs companies Apple just works for US and friends.

Also Apple could allow free content from RSS sources.

I wonder how many paid subscribers there are to Apple News+ ?
Seems like timing was very close to CNN’s subscriptions start which was Sunday. Yes you can give them $3 a month, same for Bloomberg, Wall Street and Barron is $8, most papers have gone the same. What is $12.99 compared to throwing money away. Of course it’s how much that is important for up to news other OTA, but that also includes premium also. So yes this news subscription is totally done in how businesses work in the last few years. Good that they still have the top news free. You can stay away no differently then before.

Is non USA publisher bundles involved and they might not want to sell themselves to Apple News, seems weird to expand AI to EU, but that is still premature and too radical for EU with press here gone subscriptions. Also EU might not even need that at all?

Nice to see the recipes. But at least this should be made available everywhere irrespective of News+ availability, it need not be linked to it. Also Apple should bring News+ to more regions. Taking a long time.

Wonder how long they took the preparation for advertising that?

I paid $10 for news+. I cancelled when it became $13.

The magazines were partially bad being large PDFs of the physical magazine. No option for simplified text versions of the stories.
