Even if Apple did a recall, it's not like Apple would call it a recall.
What about app purchases, etc.? Are Apple refuding those too when you return your phone? You suggest it's as simple as returning the device and buying something else, which isn't true at all, because people have invested money into the platform, which Apple have now made unusable for them. For taking it back and getting a refund to be viable, Apple would need to refund ALL costs involved, not just the price of the hardware. Alternatively, they need to fix their product.
And if those speakers claim to produce a "full spectrum" of sound than you have every right to demand Sony fix them. As a consumer who recently bought a product which is still under warranty, I have every right to demand that Apple fix my phone. I have absolutely no rights in regards to anything else, but I do have that one.
For me it is a blatant problem. The bumper case (for an extra $30) has completely fixed my problem. However, without it, I was unable to reliably make phone calls no matter which way I held it. I could use two fingers to hold the phone on each side and still I would drop calls.
Someone should do a study on who has this issue and where they are generally located. You say no one you know has this defect, but literally every person I know who has an iPhone 4, can easily reproduce the error.
Edit: I'm in Philadelphia
So the guy who brought apple out of near bankruptcy is going to kill Apple as well. Really?
If you are a new customer, I'll bet that you can get most of those purchases refunded if you play your cards right. If you are an old customer, you can go back to your old iPhone. You could also downgrade to the 3GS.
This argument has been addressed in mire detail in earlier posts.
The bitching and moaning on this issue has become a joke. Nobody is forcing you to keep your iPhone. If it doesn't meet your needs get a different phone.
I assume you had a previous iPhone and did not buy a bunch of apps with a new iPhone 4. Since the phone has never worked for you, it would be weird to rush out and buy a ton of apps.
So you sold off your old phone then? Even before you knew your new phone was going to be to your liking?
Seems like a risk you took, and one you are responsible for... You have to deal with the consequences yourself. The fact that you own a bunch of apps is irrelevant. Apple owes you nothing more than refund on your iPhone 4.
Why would anyone rush out and spend a bunch of money on apps for a phone that never worked for them? That seems crazy.
And what about if you've sold your 3GS? A lot of people will have sold their devices in advance with the reasonable expectation that Apple would make a device that worked properly. Having to re-purchase a 3GS to get a device that works properly has a good chance to mean these people will be out of pocket since they won't just be able to get their old 3GS back. It's a real slap in the face for the enthusiastic customers who make Apple what it is; they have been let down badly by this.
If you sold it in advance, well that was a risk you took. Bottom line? This phone works perfectly for a majority of customers. They may even have a fix for those that have problems. If the fix isn't to your liking then maybe it's time for you to abandon Apple as they obviously don't meet your needs. Sorry, but those are all risks you take when you "invest" in any platform.
