Why don't we see stickers everywhere that say "Apple Pay Accepted Here"? Why aren't they being more aggressive with their marketing? Why aren't they pushing for Digital IDs so the wallet truly can be a relic of the past?
Because this is the logo retailers use to let people know they take NFC payment, I don't think a lot of people know that:

I work at a large university and I can pay using Apple Pay just about anywhere on campus. I can even use it at many vending machines. Even so, I sometimes still get strange looks when I go to pay for things with my Apple Watch. Maybe it's just because it's my Watch and not my iPhone, as most college students have iPhones but not Apple Watches. But I really think that there is a marketing issue here as I see a lot of students with iPhones and they don't use them to pay. You'd think they would be at the forefront of using new tech.

Furthermore, there isn't anywhere in town where you can buy groceries with Apple Pay, among many other retailers. It's really bizarre how many companies still haven't upgraded their terminals for chip readers, even though they are now required and will be responsible for any loss incurred, much less NFC. So since there isn't wide adoption, the places that do offer it don't see many people using it, because people forget that you can do it. I try to be really cognizant of what retailers offer Apple Pay and I follow Apple news closely, and even I often forget that Best Buy, Kohl's, Toys Я Us, Staples, GameStop, PetSmart and Big Lots offer it. The only place I consistently remember is Panera since they were one of the first, and when I do try to use it at Big Lots, it always has an error—but that's not really surprising given the store, lol.

Works great in the uk, and pretty much everywhere. In fact used it in Poundland about a month or two ago and for some reason got a £1 discount???
Don't really understand why the US is having such a hard time adopting contactless

In the UK debit cards are contactless anyway, just tap them on the terminal and go. I appreciate it's different in the US where you're coming off the back of swiping cards but Apple will face an uphill struggle in parts of the world where the problem has already been solved.

I guess no one from apple has ever gone to a restaurant or a neighborhood deli. My bank card with the chip works everywhere, no exception and I can get cash (also everywhere).
Well, Bank of America and Wells Fargo are rolling out NFC-enabled ATMs. That's how you can use Apple Pay AND can still get cash.

This seems to be an US specific problem and solution. Where I am, I pay contactless directly with my credit cards. Everyone seems to install contactless terminals, even my small corner store.

Contactless payment is not the future; lose your iPhone and without credit cards, you are stranded.

It's much easier to whip out a credit card.

Having said that I use Apple Pay at times.
What if you use your wallet or purse? What would be the future payment system? Fingerprint? What if you lose your fingers? Retina scan? What if you lose your eyes? So many questions. I can't wait for the future you imagine.

iPhone market share is now probably too low for Apple Pay to ever be relevant outside the USA.

Nowadays I mostly try to use NFC and PIN (over 20€) but the norm still is chip and PIN.

I live in Toronto and many of my friends use it but I have had to let them know they can use it. I think the delay in acceptance is simply not enough education. Apple needs to tout the security features (like losing your phone does not mean losing your credit cards) and how to set it up. Canada has tap at the majority of retailers so more often then not, I can use it wherever I go. I can comfortably leave the house now without my wallet and know I can pretty much do what I need to do with just my phone.

The problem is that two of the biggest retailers in the US, Walmart and Target, continue to resist adopting Apple Pay.

I use it were I can, and its a deciding factor in where I shop, within reason.

Same here. I've pretty much stopped going to CVS pharmacies near me in favor of Rite Aid. My local Rite Aid now has a sticker prominently on their front door that indicates they support all forms of contactless payments, including Apple Pay, Android Pay, and Samsung Pay.

It's a weird paradox that a spectacularly successful US company's invention can't really be used properly in its home country because of backward finance infrastructure. I use it every single day in London.

There has been and still is a lot of pushback from both retail venders who need new card readers and also the credit card companies who need to create the behind-the scenes infrastructure to support chipped cards-and by extension, Apple and Google Pay.

Plus, the internet isn't set up in most stores to handle the increased usage required. So the stores need to pay more and buy new equipment and ISP's need to build infrastructure.

I have heard that in most places in Western Europe you only need to hold your card near a pay terminal and not insert it into that terminal, is that true?

I use it when I can and find it easy and secure. Target not accepting it isn't hurting Apple as Target is itself in bad shape and will be gone long before Apple if things continue as they are. I sue Apple pay almost every week now, sometimes more. I wish more stores accepted it.

Funny, cause a lot of stores around where I live have the right readers for Apple Pay, they just don't enable it, or they don't realize that.

i love how people LOVE to share how great it is - the reality is very very few people use it including myself.

shoot so many people don't even have it set up on their iphones.
I use it weekly if not more, but I do know people who haven't set it up. I'm not sure why as it is far more secure than a regular credit card. And it works easily. I use it at our grocery store and several restaurants.

I know what that sticker is and even I never attempt Apple Pay without seeing an Pay sticker. I figure that if there's no sign then even if it DOES work the employee hasn't been trained in it which results in the dreaded "uh, let me get my manager" when I try to pay with my phone.

The problem is most people don't have it set up and it's not that much more convenient than using a credit card.

It would be better if the receipts were digitally sent to the iphone. Getting a receipt defeats the no touching thing IMO.

But that doesn't mean they'll take Apple Pay.

Dude, if you see that logo, Apple Pay WILL MOST LIKELY WORK, even if there's no Apple Pay sticker in sight. If it doesn't work, then it means that they forgot to enable NFC.

Thing is, it's a mixed bag when it comes to how consumers pay for transactions, and a revolution isn't going to take place over night. I use credit cards. I also use cash. Some places I shop use the new chip readers, others don't. Sometimes I just don't feel like fumbling around with my phone when taking my wallet out is just as easy.

Eddy Cue definitely has the right attitude here. Playing the long game is the right game. It's a complimentary transaction system, not a supplementary one.

I was trying to point to on how hard it would be to hack into Apple Pay and get personal data.
I understand, but my point is I'm offered sufficient protections with my chip enabled card that is easier to use.

In all fairness, American consumers are notoriously slow to adapt to changes in payment methodologies.

Contactless and Chip and PIN systems have existed outside of America for well over a decade, yet so many American machines still have a Post It attached to them saying that the chip reader doesn't 'work.'

Our banks have kept us in the dark and moved at snails pace to adapt to changes in world banking, and it's pretty sad. After all a piece of VHS tape glued to a plastic card is a bit of a 1980s solution to things.

Heck, we're still using Imperial measurements over here, while the rest of the world adopted metric several decades ago.

This is so true with America, most people are slow to change that is it a step forward and 4 steps back. Most store are still not on board with the chip in the card, which, by experience is still crap. I had my wallet stolen, and still had the cards go through just as normal, even my debit cards. Thank god I had wallet on my iPhone and was able to close everything off and reversed in no time. Apple Pay is so much easier, even with the watch, just ping and go, I even like it online better. having it on my phone and watch lets me keep my cards at home and not worry about them getting stolen again, plus I can track my phone and watch lol. and remote kill it.
