I don’t like this... Please just give me a brand new phone every time I crack it. I love getting new phones with Apple Care :)

So I’ll need to totally crush my iPhone when I crack it to get a brand new one 👌

I'm curious if it'll still be the $99 charge under Apple Care (compared to the $29 front screen replacement). Have they stated the price?

If it’s still 99$ I’ll just crush my phone under my truck tire to get a brand new one haha 😂

I want the scratches fixed on the front glass if the back glass is replaced.. *sigh*

I heard from my friend at an Apple authorised service provider, the fee to replace the rear glass of an iPhone 12 Pro Max is $599 as the new repair program. It's funny that the whole unit replacement fee for cracked rear glass is also $599. He has no idea about this.

So, this would be the new way apple sucks blood, they have the option to make use of the undamage screen and rear camera instead of replacing the whole unit lol

This is same-unit repair in the sense that putting your face and eyes into a new body is same-body repair.

Right.

So does this actually mean the astronomical price for back glass repairs will come down? No? That's why I still use a case.

Good. No need to replace the entire device if the only damaged part is the rear glass cover.
yah but the bigger question is does it lower repair cost? Prior to this it was basically buying a new phone to get the rear replaced.

Apple is probably also doing this type of repair vs a whole unit refurbished replacement to avoid legal issues. They have lawsuits against them because when replacing a new defective unit with a non-new unit people complain. Therefore they are repairing the iPhone instead.

It still takes up the same amount of physical space, and it's still more than one component. If these devices were easily repairable they could could it down even further and right to repair would take care of the rest.

Fixed that for you.

you have to be crazy to use a modern smartphone case less. If that is your choice, be happy to by a new one every time it drops. These devices are the most delicate consumer products I have seen.

Maybe don't drop your phone?

I use iPhones since the 5s and never had a case and never got damaged. Cases are thick and ugly and I prefer the glass rear because it feels nice when you hold it on your hand.
If I pay that amount of cash on a premium phone, I want a premium phone and not a plastic bomber like most (and even expensive) Android phones.

Also: Not every case protects your phone from fall damage.

Just my opinion. Feel free to disagree.

Your opinion is to not drop the phone, problem solved?

that’s such an amazing idea nobody ever thought about before.

we should also just stop crashing cars. So no need of this ugly seat belt.

and planes dropping for no reason. Genius

Prevent all damage, no. Help protect against more severe damage in the case of an accidental drop, yes.

I agree, Apple phones feel far better "naked" .. but they look like crap when they have scratches all over them.

You are the one in 10,000 people who have never dropped your phone EVER or put it in a pocket with anything else in it, like keys, loose change etc ... y'know the things normal people do on a daily basis.

Well.. I really never dropped my phone (yet). Yeah it has some fine hair scratches on the rear glass and also on the screen (it's an iPhone Xs though and they're barely visible). But that's just normal wear in my eyes. If I want it to not scratch at all, then I should probably never unpack it.

It's a device of daily use after all... So yeah. I will show signs of wear.

iPhones are still pretty wear resistant and glass is more durable than most people think.

So… not the entire device.
Sorry, but I call shenanigans :)

Sure, the headline is "technically" correct. But more importantly, it implies 1) a benefit to the customer, and 2) that a long-aggrieved problem has been fixed. Neither of those are true. (And look how many readers misinterpreted the article because of the headline.)

1) The customer is no better off. Arguably, this is worse for the customer: same amount of hassle (actually, more given swaps are quicker) and same price as before (presumably), but receiving less.

2) It's absurd—absolutely absurd—that a cracked back requires the entire device* to be replaced. And if you insist on making the rear impossible to replace, perhaps don't make it out of glass (famously breakable).

And to add insult to injury, Apple considers a brand-new iPhone with a cracked back worth $0 trade-in value. To add even more insult, they put Ceramic Shield on the front (the cheap, easy part to replace) but not the more costly rear. It's a borderline scam.

For years it's been a terrible design wrapped in terrible policy, and this only makes it worse.

so they still charge full OOW price and just do Same unit repair?
This will only benefit apple unless they provide lower price for rear system repair.

"In its memo, Apple reiterated that this move supports the company's ongoing commitment to reducing the carbon footprint of every product it sells."

No mention of ongoing commitment of the repair-ability.

You’ll be surprised how well they survive in most cases. Will they look impeccable afterwards? No, but once you can live with scratches a lot of the case paranoia dies out. ;)

As one wise German once said: “Logisch denken, Särge schenken!” (Think logical, gift coffins.)
