how on Earth can this be front page news... this should've been on... oops just noticed there's no iPad tab on macrumors.

Ummm... this option was available last week on Monday? Or it was for me somehow.

Stock of the Apple Pencil and Smart Keyboard remains low, but Apple is now allowing customers to use its Personal Pickup feature to order the devices online and arrange to pick them up in a local Apple Store. Enabling Personal Pickup may make it easier for customers hoping to get an Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard to locate one nearby, as it lists retail stock that's shipped to stores each day.
"Apple is now allowing customers"

I had to read this twice.

Such a breathtaking honor.

Apple is being so kind to us.

The mere thought of being granted this Supreme Honor... from the richest company on earth is very touching.

Oh my my my... :D

No, it wasn't. And I've had them on order from the apple store for almost 3 weeks now with no charge or improvement in time to wait...

I don't understand why this product is in such short supply. The pencil is at least one of the driving reasons to buy the pro iPad.

My local store doesn't have any pencils or keyboards but has iPads. Hell, they didn't have enough Pencils for their four iPad Pro demo units. Luckily, two of the four were dead, so they didn't have to share. Ha.

I wonder if it has occurred to Apple management that people might hold off on iPad Pro purchases while waiting for Pencil and Keyboard to be in stock. I'm fighting with the impulse to have immediate gratification on my first iPad for music apps while Korg is having a 50%-off sale on apps, rather than just wait for B&H to have stock on all three items at the same time.

Just means you can reserve the available stock so that it doesn't disappear before you get there. "Allowing" is a fair term.

This reminds me of everyone all waiting in line for a "toothbrush"

....except the "toothbrush" is a "pencil"

(Actually, that's not a bad idea either)

You can use your finger to pass the time...... it's challenging getting it right :D

I ordered a Pencil about 2 weeks ago and it's still back ordered to January.

Would be nice to get lucky locally and be able to cancel that!

To repeat a post above

Worst. Product launch. Ever!

I noticed this the day Apple allowed it. And checking every day, multiple times there have been no pencils available anywhere within 600 miles of Seattle.

had a play with an ipad pro the other day, just really confused why it cost the same as a iPhone 6S to buy outright .. as in the iPhone is getting too expensive

By the time I get my hands on a Pencil, a big chunk of the time of owning a current model iPad Pro will be gone. I might as well just wait for the second gen iPad Pro that'll be out in 10 months.

Tim Cook's specialty was supposed to be the supply chain. So far, he's messed up on meeting demand for the Watch at launch and now a key accessory that justifies their new flagship iPad.

look at the dollars rolling in.

they can't get complacent, sure, but i'm pretty sure his supply chain skills were always for the benefit of apple (lower costs and less sitting on stock) rather than the customer...

I'm just wondering just when will the keyboard and pencil be readily available. Like when will it be available to just walk into a store and pick one up because this 4-5 week delay hasn't changed since it came out a month ago and one would assume it would eventually start to diminish. I did get lucky and walk into a best buy and bought the last Logitech keyboard for the pro but this pencil is just perplexing. If I was betting money I wouldn't expect to find one just in the store until March or April which to me is unacceptable to produce so few. That's a longer lag than I've seen for any other Apple product. Any thoughts.

Just so everyone knows. The Apple pencil and smart keyboard can be purchased from Verizon wireless. I ordered the pencil on their website two days ago and it is going to be delivered Tuesday. As of now they are still both in stock.

Well, this is affecting Apple's quarterly results. I'm sure I'm not the only one who's sale Apple lost. I'm not buying an iPad Pro without the Pencil because it's a key feature, in fact its the iPad Pro's main sales pitch. After months of not being able to get a Pencil, I might as well skip this generation and wait for the next iPad Pro. This is a direct consequence of poor supply chain management, something Tim Cook was supposed to be really good at.

Picked up my Space grey IPP 128GB Cellular along with the smart keyboard, silicon back case and pencil at the Aix-en-Provence (France) store the other day. I got the last IPP but they had lots of smart keyboards and pencils. Not sure how many smart keyboards they will sell here in France as its QWERTY and not AZERTY, however I'm English so it's great for me. I hate AZERTY keyboards. The store was heaving and you did have to queue to look at the IPPs.

Despite my initial reservations about it, mainly the price, I'm loving it.

Both the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard were unavailable on the day the iPad Pro launched, with the earliest November 11 buyers receiving their accessories a week or two later. Those who were not lucky enough to order right at midnight when the iPad Pro launched were stuck with delivery estimates that ranged into late December. Orders placed today list a delivery estimate of mid-January.

Though it's impossible to get an Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard online, Apple has been sending small shipments of the accessories to its retail stores each day, allowing some lucky customers to purchase in store. Prior to today, the only way to get an Apple Pencil or Smart Keyboard was to show up shortly after a shipment was received, as there was no way to track supplies online. With Personal Pickup, it's now possible to see exactly which stores have which devices in stock in the United States and other countries.

It appears that the Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard are not available in many stores across the country at the current time, with stores in many of the major cities we checked listing it as "Unavailable for Pickup." A couple of MacRumors readers have been able to purchase an Apple Pencil for pickup, so stock levels may just be fluctuating based on the retail shipments received.

The Apple Pencil and the Smart Keyboard are priced at $99 and $169, respectively, and are designed to work solely with the iPad Pro, Apple's most powerful tablet device.

(Thanks, Noire!)
