Maps? Is Apple expecting people to wear this while driving? I'll be interested to see how this works, even though I'm not that interested in purchasing these myself.

The redesigned Maps will most likely function like Google Earth VR does. Until they get to the point of AR glasses which is their endgoal, xrOS Maps ain't ready for driving.

XROS? Apple is getting into the Vape business. Jeez, as if they weren't already try to get you addicted to their ecosystem.

extended Reality Operating System means glasses viewport with augmented UX/UI interactive behaviors that will pair with macOS, watchOS, tvOS and iOS. The glass viewport will have mapped heads up display with your hands working like a mouse. Not hard to imagine a new kind of Bluetooth three rings 3D space mouse that’s paired with your phone and glasses or macOS allowing an extended viewport to perform actions on each device, not just glasses like oculus which is an embedded portable device with all the hardware integrated.

Apple will focus on extending their hardware access through these glasses.

Ohhh, I can see it now, driving down the 4 lane highway and a notification pops up and blocks your view. Just last evening I had to slam on my brakes because a PU was towing a dark trailer -- if I had had ANY distraction I wouldn't have ever seen it. Not good...

I'm already ticked off at iOS enough for popping up irrelevant notifications on top of apps. At least I haven't found the setting that disables notifications by apps on top of other apps. Grrrrrrrr.

Anyway, I definitely wont be buying a headset and sure as heck wouldn't drive with one on and I'd try to get our local government to make it illegal.

Apple has decided to call the software that will run on its upcoming AR/VR headset "xrOS," an update from the original "RealityOS or "rOS" naming the company was planning on, according to Bloomberg.
The naming is weird if that was true. Maybe Apple throwing out red herrings to determine whose dumb enough to publicize it. Can hear it now at Apple, we have a winner.

The name change comes as Apple begins to prepare for the launch of the headset, which is expected at some point in 2023. The headset will feature its own operating system, much like the Apple TV and the Apple Watch, and it will have a dedicated App Store.

"XR" is meant to stand for extended reality, which pertains to both augmented and virtual reality. Rumors indicate that the headset Apple is working on will be "mixed reality" like the Microsoft HoloLens, supporting both augmented and virtual reality capabilities. Augmented reality augments what the user is seeing in the real world, while virtual reality is an entirely digital experience.

As has been previously rumored, the headset will have new versions of existing apps like Maps and Messages, which have been redesigned for an AR/VR experience. Apple is also creating a software development kit so third-party apps can be created for the headset.

Apple internally referred to the headset's operating system as "rOS" during the development process, but Bloomberg suggests that xrOS is a less generic name that will allow the headset to stand out more.

In addition to confirming the name change with unnamed Apple sources, Bloomberg also discovered that a shell company named Deep Dive LLC has been registering the xrOS name across several countries, and Apple could potentially be behind these filings. Apple often uses shell companies to try to secretly register for trademarks for upcoming products.

There is still no solid sign of when the headset might be introduced, but it is expected to be unveiled in the first half of the year, perhaps at WWDC or even earlier to give developers time to create apps for the device.

I’ll still be very surprised if this thing materializes next year. How long has it been due “next year”?

I remember 2020,2021,2022 and now 2023 as target release years.

It’s only bested by release date guesses for an Apple Car.

I still can't see the everyday benefit for this. But, I guess they will surprise me, but remember, Apple has had failed products in the past.

It’s like the Space Race in the 60s. The US and USSR spent billions just trying to prove who is the bigger guy and then the Cold War (part 1) was over and they stopped wasting money. Now a new Space Race with China exists so they both spend billions on stupid ideas like landing on Mars, which is really stupid because colonies can’t live there.

Same with VR. One company does it, another one races against them, then another company jumps in, and they all waste time and money trying to convince customers to buy their version and not the other company’s version.

It’s like a circle jerk of corporate delusion.

NOW it makes sense1!!!!!1111!!!!!

It's taking so long to finish the product not because the market is limited, but because they can't name the OS

Control what eyes see and ears hear and this can be anything & everything you do with those senses now. For example, ALL Apple products could be "in there", meaning if you have these googles with you, you also have a virtual iPhone, iPad, Mac, etc with any screen size from watch to IMAX screen. With the right subscription service, you can sit front row center for ANY show or sporting event without having to actually go there and pay up for that very scarce RE on that single event day (everyone with goggles and that subscription can enjoy the same, ideal seats too). And on and on.

Think about what you do with your eyes & ears every day. All of that could be done inside your view through this: work, play, travel, entertainment, etc.

Think about what you WISH your eyes & ears could see & hear on any given day. All of that becomes possible with this. Simulate lunch on the Moon. Have a look at what is going on in Hawaii. Relax on a beach in Fiji. Etc.

Controlling what you see and hear is towards Matrix/Star Trek Holodeck. With next years "smellometer" add on and the year after touch-a-matic, 2 senses (controlled) becomes 3 and then 3 becomes 4. Find some way to add taste and it IS a first cut at Matrix/Holodeck.

Now that may seem too ambitious to deliver in 2023. But again, being able to show eyes what you want and play something for ears to hear does open up an enormous amount of experiences one can have and/or enjoy with only those 2 senses.

xrOS is too hard to say. They should stick to realityOS. There is no way that stands for extended reality. It has always stood for mixed reality.

You have described something so terrible that consumers will be rankled by it. You’re literally describing a virtual prison cell with enthusiasm, and yet it is impossible to wear a headset for long without suffering. These devices no matter how light are cognitively and physically demanding.
