WOW, Apple had to get CEO's involved to resolve a common sense problem, that should not of been a problem to begin with. But, after all, it is Apple, somethings they love to do thru an a butt...

Well, Apple didn't do anything earth-shattering here. All they did was add the ability to change a non-iCloud AppleID email address to an iCloud email address.

That seems simple enough for the capabilities of a CEO. ;-)

Off topic somewhat, but one thing I don't understand about Apple authentication is that with two factor authentication, I frequently get the numeric code required as the second factor ON the device I'm logging in from. This seems like it defeats the purpose entirely.

Anybody else seeing this? It started after iOS 11.

I agree  and always wonder how it can work or if it is possible to fix it !? I posted this same question in another forum and got this answer

The purpose of two-factor authentication is not to protect the hardware. It's to protect your Apple ID. If you're following proper security protocols, you already had to use a password to log into your Mac. That (and FileVault) are what protects your Mac. If you're Mac is listed as one of your trusted devices, once you've logged into it, you can proceed to log into your Apple ID and the code will be sent to you.

I tried to take my Mac off the list of my trusted devices but this way you'll be eliminating Find My Mac and I don't want that.

I guess we have to live with protecting our Apple ID and the Mac separately

This is an issue for anyone who created Apple IDs to make iTunes purchases before MobileMe (now iCloud) was implemented in iOS 3 in 2008. When these users created a free MobileMe account for iOS they were left with an Apple ID for iTunes purchases and a separate Apple ID for iCloud functionality in iOS.

Most of the people affected by this have @me.com or @mac.com email addresses that were created before 2008, but there are probably a number of people who switched from Android to iOS since then that have the same problem.

Apple has been promising a way to merge the legacy Apple IDs for nearly seven years, but looks like it will never happen.

It’s just sad it makes the whole apple experience complicated as far as setting up an iPhone etc.

Question: is it at all advantageous to have your Apple ID tied to a third-party email provider for security or account recovery purposes? If someone tries to hijack my current Apple ID and it's in lockdown, isn't it better for me to be able to verify using a Gmail address that I can still get at?

Absolutely. The problem I had was that I had to use a third-party email for my Apple ID, because my iCloud email was created with it. Now, I can use the iCloud email as my Apple ID, and my third-party email purely as a recovery feature.

This is still not working perfectly. I was successfully able to switch my Apple ID to my @me.com address. It gave the appearance that you could use either your @iCloud.com or @me.com at any given time, to switch back and forth between the two. I successfully switched it to the @icloud alias. Now, I can't switch it back to @me.com. There's a selection box asking me which address I want to use, but when I select @me.com, it says my Apple ID can't be updated at this time, try again later.

So buggy and annoying.

my issue is i have a .mac address and my wife has an apple iCloud email that was linked to it as a family member. she really likes that email and refuses to change but i cant separate it - its down as an alias of mine - so i get all her email and she gets all mine! its ok for some emails that we deal with together.. e.g. bills etc. but its a pain for other things.. do you think i should email the top team about this??? can they separate it out??

I always assumed that was exactly why they had the restriction, they wanted a separate way to contact you if there was a problem with your account.
That's not at all what this is though. They forced you to use a third-party e-mail address as your Apple ID. You could still put a third-party e-mail as a means of contacting you in your other settings as another way of contacting you. This finally lets me keep my old Apple ID from the Mobile Me days as my main ID. This was bothering me for the longest time. I'm really glad they did this.

Still cant get this to work..

Any fix?
Not sure what to tell you. Worked for me on the first try. It's weird that it's not working for everyone. Maybe it's a rollout type thing.

I was in the same boat of getting the "you cannot use an icloud.com address" and figured it out - here's how I did it:

Just to summarize so nobody gets confused, I was in this situation:
  • I have only one Apple ID
  • The Apple ID is my Gmail address
  • I also have an iCloud address, which is my primary e-mail address to my Apple ID
The trick is that Apple won't let you change your Apple ID to your @icloud.com address if it is the primary e-mail address for your Apple ID - and there's no obvious way to change it. But!

Go to the Apple Store. Go to your account and select to "Change your default shipping or billing info". In that screen, choose to edit your payment information. Update the e-mail address here to your Gmail/Hotmail/whatever your Apple ID is currently set to (not your iCloud). This changes your primary e-mail address at the same time!

Go back to the Apple ID page and log out. Log back in and try to change again. It should let you now, and your Apple Store billing e-mail address will also change back to your iCloud address at the same time!

How did you get an iCloud address? By creating a new one on a device?

Yeah, I guess my situation was different. I never had a mac.com or me.com account, I setup an icloud.com address somewhere around 2013 and started using it as my primary e-mail although I had two other addresses. At the time, I would have preferred to phase out those old addresses and only use icloud, but I needed to keep one for my AppleID.

In the end, it's all just too much trouble so I'm going to leave things the same since it's all working now - although just yesterday one of my AppleTV's popped up an alert about not being able to login to iTunes.

Yeah, this is the main problem.

I was forced to use my @gmail.com account as my apple id when iTunes first came out. I bought lots of MP3s back in the day.

Later on, I bought MobileMe which gave me a @me.com account which I never really used until I started taking pictures with my iPhone and realized I really should back these photos up in the iCloud and sync them across my devices. So I bought .99 worth of 50 GB a month to sync photos with my @me.com account.

Now there is no way to join my backup photos and my iTunes/app purchases into one account. That is unfortunate.

Same problem as FatherJack1980.

It allows me to switch to @me.com but not @icloud.com.... bizzaaaaarrrrrroooo

"Your Apple ID cannot end in @icloud.com. Choose a different email address."

This is one of those... FINALLY APPLE moments. Now if we could only merge two Apple IDs that would be progress!

The Apple support document for this is very confusing. It says sign out of all Apple services and devices - I have no idea how to do that. Then it says delete your current Apple ID and set-up a new one using your icloud email as your Apple ID. If I do that will it delete all my iTunes content? I’m going to contact Apple Support before I do anything.

Has anyone successfully changed their accounts using an @icloud alias? It seems I can change my Apple ID to my base @icloud account, but if I attempt to change it using my alias, then it gives me the red error message "Your Apple ID cannot end in @icloud.com. Choose a different email address."
