Good riddance Google, until Google doesn't have to sell out to advertisers at the expense of users. They have to choose who they want to cater to, users or advertisers, cannot be both.

I will probably make the change tonight or over the weekend, when I am home and have enough time with to deal with any issues arising from this.

I'm still trying to understand all of this, so I can change my @gmail account to an icloud account, but, what happens to my email, will it automatically be forwarded to the icloud account? Also, do I lose all my purchases? I'm just trying to understand all of this.

My Apple ID was made before it was required to be an email. Its just a username. Apple keeps bugging me to update it to an email, but I just can't. I think its been the same since 2004

I have this issue too. I also have an AppleID that does have an @me.com. So that raises another issue: is it possible to combine, or do I need to continue to have a separate AppleID for purchases from the one I use for icloud? Just amazed they finally did ANYTHING on this whole issue of non-Apple email addresses. Several clients have been in this predicament and their non-Apple email addresses could go away (eg. they use a personal domain for that email and don't want it any more).

I think I found the solution... I had a Gmail account as my Apple ID but am using my iCloud account for my personal email and it was also the primary email address on my Apple ID. The Gmail account was solely used for the username of my Apple ID. I too was met with the error last night when trying to switch to my iCloud email address, saying something like "You cannot use an Apple ID ending in @icloud.com."

What I ended up doing was to go into Settings on my iPhone: Settings > [Your Name] > Name, Phone Numbers, Email and changed my primary email address away from the iCloud address I was trying to change my Apple ID to. Thinking this would solve it, I then tried the switch but was met with the same error message. I then went back into Settings on my iPad, MacBook Pro, iMac, and iPhone and checked out Messages and FaceTime. I found that on my computers, my iCloud email address was checked to send and receive Messages from. Odd, because I have always left only my phone number checked, but nonetheless I unchecked my iCloud email address. I then retried the change to my iCloud email on the Apple ID site but was met with the error. I then signed out and signed back in to the Apple ID site and was then finally able to change from the Gmail address to my iCloud address as my Apple ID.

Hope this helps!
Again, on iOS 11.1 all I see is the Reachable At and not a primary email address.

Where does your gmail email go now? I always had mine to forward (delete on gmail) to my iCloud address.

This is off topic but I read today where we can now change our email associated with our Apple ID from a third party account to an Apple email. My question is does this mean we can finally merge iCloud and App Store accounts if we’ve been using two different emails for each? For example I use a me.com for iCloud and a yahoo.com for the App Store. This happened as a result of back in the Mobile Me days. I have no purchases under my iCloud email just all my iCloud documents and such. That would make life a lot simpler if they could be merged and I could use the same Apple email for the both accounts.

From what I've heard, no unfortunately not. I wish we could!

It's directly through gmail for right now, I am signed into my gmail account on my iphone so I can get my email though the mail app. I would love to get my email through push, through an icloud account, would I have to forward all my email to the icloud account if I "merge" the gmail to an icloud account, like I said i am so confused about this, I would like unity with all apple products.

This is not related to your email account but your login ID into your Apple devices and services. To make it clearer, Apple cannot interfere with your access to services other than Apple services because they simply cannot. You can still access to Gmail accounts or others, there is no impact to them from this change. The only change is how you login into your Apple devices, your login ID - Apple ID is the change and not the email account from any other provider.

Does this help?

I was in the same boat of getting the "you cannot use an icloud.com address" and figured it out - here's how I did it:

Just to summarize so nobody gets confused, I was in this situation:
  • I have only one Apple ID
  • The Apple ID is my Gmail address
  • I also have an iCloud address, which is my primary e-mail address to my Apple ID
The trick is that Apple won't let you change your Apple ID to your @icloud.com address if it is the primary e-mail address for your Apple ID - and there's no obvious way to change it. But!

Go to the Apple Store. Go to your account and select to "Change your default shipping or billing info". In that screen, choose to edit your payment information. Update the e-mail address here to your Gmail/Hotmail/whatever your Apple ID is currently set to (not your iCloud). This changes your primary e-mail address at the same time!

Go back to the Apple ID page and log out. Log back in and try to change again. It should let you now, and your Apple Store billing e-mail address will also change back to your iCloud address at the same time!

Yes this helps greatly, thank you so much for the clarification, literally the answer I was looking for.

No one because apple.com isn’t available to the general public. But iCloud.com is! And all of our clients use it!

Yes! In iOS Go to > Settings > Accounts & Passwords > iCloud > Scroll to the bottom under Advanced > Mail > Then deselect the sliders for the email addresses you don’t want.

This should automatically reflect as well in Mac Mail in MacOS!
Interesting, thanks for that. Unfortunately it requires me to leave whichever email checked that I selected in the "iCloud Account Information" email field above. So at least one of the emails is always checked.

Does this mean we can change the iCloud address associated with our account now?
I hope so ! I made a mistake many, many years ago when I set up my Apple ID and tied in family sharing with our kid's (at the time) iPods. I created an icloud.com email address on our daughter's iPod thinking it would be only for her device but it turns out it's a secondary email tied to my Apple ID and though it's secondary, I can't remove it or unlink it.

Well I have my gmail account forwarded to my iCloud account so all come to the iCloud.com email. You could continue to do the gmail via mail app, but as you know its not push.

Guys I need some help. How can I get a new iCloud email adress? Only mail adress without apple id. i want to use a new @icloud.com adress as my new apple id

one last question, with the forwarding of the emails, would it transfer also the saved folders?

That's a great point. What happens for those who have family sharing setup? Do all the members have to setup again?

I tried to update my Apple ID to my iCloud e-mail address, but it still doesn't let me do it. I guess the issue is not yet fixed worldwide.

This does not help me I have mobile me aka iCloud acct and my other Apple ID with my personal email that was created before my mobile me aka iCloud acct I can’t merge the two and I don’t want to loose all my purchases. It’s such a pain to have two acts one for iCloud and another for purchasing movies music and apps. Help Apple !!!!

It doesn't appear to allow the change(s) I want (yet).... To clarify, my Apple ID is my Gmail address and I have no interest in changing this. I am "Reachable at"

xxxxxxxx@gmail.com
937-xxx-xxxx (my phone number)
our-daughter's-name@icloud.com

The little "?" bubble tells me that that icloud address is an alias. Problem is, if I go to icloud.com, login with my Apple ID (my Gmail address), the primary email address is that iCloud.com one. I want to get rid of that ! Because it's tied to my Apple ID and our daughter did use it on an older phone, when I set up a new iPhone, computer, etc, it actually restores phone call logs, Facetime logs, iMessage logs, and so on to my devices !! Once I remove that email address from the "Reachable at" setting on each device and then manually delete these one by one, do they go away.

If you do this you will lose all your previous purchases(games, apps, apple music, etc.).
A workaround could be to use your old AppleID with App Store only, to retain your purchase history, and use a new fresh AppleID for the rest. This way you will have two working AppleIDs, but i don't recommend doing this, it's not comfy.

Or maybe you didn't purchase so much, then you can simply ditch the old one.
https://appleid.apple.com there you can create and completely new AppleID.

But once your existing AppleID is linked to a valid primary Apple Email(icloud.com, me.com or mac.com), you can't re-link it to a new fresh one.
