Proper encryption and protection of your diary can be a quite important issue.

Brings me to think of this snippet which I read on a Stack Exchange site yesterday:

One caveat: As I unpleasantly found some years ago, if you should ever sue someone in a contentious civil case, U.S. attorneys can get a subpoena for your diary, if they know you keep one and they want to see your state of mind during a series of events. My diary didn't affect the case, but it was kind of embarrassing to have someone else read it.

I'm not a US citizen so I'm not really in the position to verify this, but if this is the case you might want to be aware of it.

Fair enough, I think we agree on the basics. I'd also like to offer that the hysteria is not on the side of the people concerned about privacy issues, the hysteria is on the side of commercial companies that use and abuse private data and information of users with respect similar to that given to animals groomed for a slaughterhouse.

In the information age personal data and information is the gold, it's what everyone is after, from the psycho intelligence agencies to the greedy business people.

It's your and mine private information, on a practical and philosophical level it's not different from us, it's us and we still own us. Although our governments and businesses do their best to reduce us to nothing more than production units without any other rights than to shut up and be good cogs in their crazy machine of dominance and control.

Many of the social media services are created, designed and operated for the sole purpose of harvesting personal and private data and information.

That's why what Apple is doing is revolutionary and deserves all support and respect.

Have a good and private easter holiday. And don't let them crucify your privacy.

Mr Frost, do you mind to share which one you use? Myself I use iOS/OS X Notes for this purpose, mostly to record my dreams.

My Wonderful Days.

Apple Notes ? I think it could work. I trust Apple and Google with my privacy. The media would be all over them if either of them made a mistake or had a breach. Day One? Not so much as it is a smaller company but I still bought their Day One 2. I am really uncomfortable knowing that humans can read what I write and can't wait for the encryption key to be implemented in a few months. They did a really good job with their app and their customer support has impressed me...As long as you're consistent, a lot of things can work for journaling. I highly recommend Day One - I can't imagine life without it now.

I appreciate the response. As you mention above, consistency is definitely the key, and it's something I've definitely struggled with re: journaling. I have Day One Classic for iOS and Mac, and I've made a number of entries in them, but worries about privacy coupled with my own inconsistent approach to journaling didn't find me fully invested in it. I also had good luck with Roller Journal, but despite its strengths, it paled in some areas Day One excelled in, and with Roller Journal not receiving any updates for a couple years now, I don't think that situation will change.

A part of me would really like to use Apple's Notes as a journaling solution (for privacy/security first and sketching second), but I'm obviously the type of guy that needs a journal interface to be as inviting as possible to stick with it, so I think I might dive back in with Day One 2 and start writing again.

I journal on a very irregular basis. I might go a month without an entry and then write for several days in a row. It all depends on whether I have something to say. Pages works fine for that.

Are you worried that development for this app has ended? I spent some time looking at the app and I really like what I see.

I wasn't aware of that. It was updated last November, which wasn't that long ago. It all seems to work fine, including the Export and iCloud functionality. I especially like the ability to export a PDF of the whole diary or parts of it.

Oops didn't mean to say has ended, meant to say are you worried that it will end - which you answered. Thanks for the app suggestion, looking to get it today. I like the iCloud syncing vs some other company's cloud.

Thanks!

iOS 9 REQUIRES iTunes 12, Apple REQUIRES me to buy a new computer to run iTunes 12. Fail.

You do not need to use a computer at all to use an iOS device, and you can do a software update on your device, no computer required. And so the fail is with you. You have two choices. Update to iOS 9 and take advantage of this free app. Or don't, and don't.

It's at the bottom of the Stores page, which is stupid since we don't have any...

I'm in Singapore and the apple store app in Singapore doesn't have it too. BUT! IF you go to "Accounts" on the bottom of the app, scroll down, click country, you can temporarily change the country to America just to download the app. After you're done downloading, just change the country back to your own original country! There you have it. Free download ^^

Well, it's May 31st and ... no encryption. When I started using Day One 2, I said to myself if they don't come through with the encryption by May (as the first post says), I would most likely quit using it (delete all my data).

I just don't see how they can sync 100+MB of my data to all my devices (growing exponentially now that I can do 10 pictures per post) without losing money over the course of X years times X # of users doing the same thing - all being forced to use their servers. Day One version 1, my data was 12MB because it was all text. It's only been 5 months into the year and I'm using 100+MB, 250+mb for a year, synced to my iPhone, iPad, Macbook Air, and Mac Mini all on their dime because I can't use iCloud.

I've become hooked with the ability to post pictures - and average 4-6 pictures per post now. I find it really makes going back to read what I've written a lot more enjoyable but I've also found that I write a lot less when I copy/paste a picture into my journal (interesting side effect). I LOVE exporting my month of journals (with their pictures) to a PDF - probably my most favorite feature.

It's a fine line, it bothers me that Apple and Google has access to my data, but I trust them a lot more than I trust a company like Day One.

EDIT - THANKS poobear ---- Looks like they're moving forward with the encryption!!!! I jumped the gun. Restore went smoothly.

Doh!!! <bleep><bleepity><bleep><bleep> lol. Well at least I backed up my data. Now I get to test the restore functions.

Thank you. :)

Edit: Restoring 875 entries and 345 pictures was successful. Kinda surprised, it restored perfectly and in less than 30 seconds.

Edit2: "Privacy: Your personal journaling data can only be read by you. You explicitly authorize the devices that can decrypt it. Even someone with full access to the sync infrastructure (servers, network, database, data storage, etc.) can’t read it or secretly tamper with it." How interesting.

Didn't want to create a new thread ----- Day One finally has end to end encryption! It looks like it's encrypting entry by entry as I just enabled it on my Macbook Air and the sync shows in progress and has for awhile now (syncing thousands of my entries).

I don't see any news article but an app update for Mac just came out mentioning it.

Interested to see how this will affect my iPhone and iPad. Also, I noticed in the encryption page it says that this is not available yet for the Android or Web app. I assume these are coming soon?

Pretty stoked about this. I can only imagine how hard Day One's servers are going to be hit having to re-upload everything.

If any DayOne employees are reading this - I apologize for my excessive usage. I'm probably one of their heavier users (with photos/entries). Love the app a lot! I have put a fresh review on the Mac app store for you (and will on the iOS soon).

Edit: Yep, have to re-upload everything and then re-download it on all your apps. Just got done re-uploading everything on my Mac - I started up my iPhone, scanned the code, and now it's downloading everything. So make sure you're plugged in.

Edit 2: 1208 entries and 1312 photos - woo hoo! Everything went smoothly on Mac and on iPhone. A+ to Day One!

lol - I got home to my iPad, started up Day One and freaked a little when I couldn't find anything. After a few minutes of going through all the settings it dawned on me... I have to update the app first! Duh! lol. Yep, sure enough, I went to the Apple App store and updated Day One and we're good to go. lol.

Scanning the QR code is the frigging most awesome thing ever for the encryption key. Really easy and really cool. I was dreading having to enter that long key in manually - nope, click scan, hover camera, bam done.
