Cool, thank you! i will get one then. as i rather have that then a repair bill of 800 + usd when out of apple care after 3 year haha. thank you!
No worries. It is a shame that the individual keys don’t shine through the keyboard cover, though. That annoyed me. Maybe if you want that, get the clear cover?

No, but i'll get a keyboard that works in anything they've made since the early 90s.

They all offer an inferior typing experience to that offered by Apple. Trust me, I've sampled a lot of the competition.

The current generation butterfly largely fixes the issues people are complaining about anyway.

I've sampled pretty much all of the competition as well. "Largely fixes" = it doesn't fix the root cause of the issue, and this isn't some magical thing we should be giving apple a pass on.

Keyboards have been a "solved problem" since the 1980s or earlier. I had an IBM model M a while ago that was made in 1984 and STILL WORKS.

I also disagree with the typing experience. My '15 macbook pro is good yes. But i wouldn't call it significantly superior to a lot of others, and you can't buy that keyboard anymore anyway. You're stuck with this butterfly garbage.

Here it goes. I have the problem solved, Johnny can thank me later. Just put modern components into this and then you would have the best laptop ever

Made an appointment earlier this week to bring my MBP in Monday. Mentioned it to my wife tonight. She asked why. I told her about the keyboard problems, and they now that I have two bad keys I decided to bring it in.

Two hours later I got this text from her about her MacBook.

I would have to disagree with the report Apple is prioritizing keyboard repairs. Just took in my late 2016 maxed out MBP for yet another keyboard repair: "B", "F" repeating. A couple of other keys were almost non-responsive except for a solid "mechanical keyboard" finger strike....

Apple told me they would rush . . .. a week. Yet, I guess this is better than past repairs.....Up to two weeks. However, I am accustomed to this as it is the 3 or 4 keyboard.

Tbh the best you can do right now is selling this device and buying MBP(2018) or something with Windows. They’re gonna keep breaking since it’s a design flaw, which cannot be repaired just by replacing one part. All of them will break at some point.

Why would getting the MBP (2018) make a difference? It’s the exact same keyboard as the one in the MBA (2018).

Best keyboard I have had to date is my 2013 13" MBA, with my 2015 13" MBP being a close second.

I use a 2017 15" MBP at work, but only in clamshell mode whenever possible. Can't stand that keyboard and am afraid it will fail if I use it too much.

I wonder if they can make a replacement top case with a functional keyboard to replace the butterfly keyboards. I know they won’t. I just wonder if it’s possible.

I’m thinking really hard about getting a Surface Pro or Surface Laptop 2. I just don’t want to lose MacOS.

I was really amazed by how much I loved my Surface Pro when I switched. It takes a little relearning but now I really couldn't go back to any form factor than a 2 in 1 or the Surface Pro.

Do you find the keyboard cover to work well? Any issues with the hardware? Can you please explain what you like most about it? I’m really struggling to decide on whether or not to make the jump.

The keyboard cover(Type Cover) actually blew away my expectations. I would say its better than about 90% of the actual keyboards on laptops and always felt like a real keyboard and never felt like I was typing on an accessory. The trackpad is the best trackpad out their for any Windows PC. I'm so used to it now that I don't even ever think about it, but I remeber when I first used it feeling like it wasn't as good as an Apple trackpad. As I said it never was a problem and now I would probably say the exact opposite if I tried an Apple Trackpad. It's just a little different and takes a few days to be completely comfortable, but in no way is it inferior.

Before I got a Surface, I had a Macbook Pro and an iPad. I loved the form factor of the iPad but hated that it was pretty much a blown up iPhone and just wished Apple would put OS X in a tablet form factor. I really didn't care how much it cost or if it was perfect because I was willing to trade off for the form factor. At the time I broke my iPhone and needed a new phone and since I didn't really like iOS and was in the mind frame that Android is evil, I ended up with a Windows Mobile Phone 8 made buy Nokia and really loved the UI and how it worked with touchscreen. So after having that experience when it came time to upgrade the iPad I actually bought a Surface RT. At the time I didn't need a tablet that could run desktop apps because I still had my Macbook Pro. It worked perfectly, it had full MS office on it for free, I could hook up an external keyboard and monitor and basically have a Windows Desktop. I never bought the Type Cover for it because at the time I just wanted a tablet. I could even torrent on it which was a huge win for me.

Well I found myself using the MacBook Pro a lot less and using the Surface RT a lot more and eventually decided to sell the MacBook Pro and buy a Surface Pro 3. I had that until I decided to buy a Surface Pro 4, and gave it to my sister and it still works. Heck I gave my mom the Surface RT and she is still using it to this day, but her omly needs are Facebook, Netflix and Solitare. Had the Surface 4 for quite a bit of time and loved it. It was able for me to be a tablet, a laptop and basically a desktop when I hooked it up to an external Keyboard and mouse. Plus even though the storage was only 128gb SSD at the time, it didn't matter because I could put a 256 Micro Sd card in it and have upgradable storage. One thing for sure is to buy Microsoft Complete when you buy it. It extends your normal warranty and allows for 2 accidental damage claims with a deductible of 50 dollars. It has saved my ass a few times and actually benefited me when I took it in and they didn't have any of the 128gb SSD 4gb ram models and just gave me a 256GB SSD and 8 GB model lol. Also it says only 2 accidental claims but the truth is after that it's a case by case descion buy the manager. I had used up my 2 claims and had an accident with it so I thought I was SOL anyways. Went to the Microsoft Store and had already intended on buying a Surface Book 2, which I had been wanting and only waiting until the Pro 4 died. So I bought that and since my Pro 4 was still under extended warranty asked if there was anyway to do a third claim since I just spent a huge ammount of money in the store anyways and sure enough he said yes and I walked out of there with a Surface Book and a Surface Pro 4 for 50 dollars. I recommend it highly and remember when you first get it, it might seem inferior in someways to a Mac but really it's only you being used to the way a Mac works and when you get comfortable with Windows, you won't even thimk about it. Hope that helps and feel free to ask me any questions because I remember when I first switched I was looking for a way to do something and couldnt for the life of me figure out how and it was only because I was thinking in terms of how I did it on my Mac and finally when I realized how to do it, I was like well that actually makes sense lol.

The computer was returned after 6 days. The keyboard, this time, is different from previous keyboards. The symbols for "Tab", "Control" and "Option" are different than previous iterations. Also, the colour of the keyboard is matte. And finally the typing sound is much softer, more muted.

It seems there was also a problem with the screen, so that was replaced.

Only time will tell.

Admittedly I am very worried as what happens when Apple Warranty expires.....?

It sounds like Apple is using the third generation keyboard. New keyboard, screen, battery... nice, but six days out of commission is not good. Are you located in the US?

I discovered I had this problem last week on my MacBook Pro 13" https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/touch-bar-flickering-when-off.2159314/

As it was a Touch Bar problem, the solution was to change the top case (keyboard and battery …)

I had an appointment at the Store yesterday at 2pm and the Genius told me that it'll take maximum 6 days.
But they called me today at 4:30pm saying that the repair is done and that I can come pick it up.
So next-day turnaround was respected, that's nice!

At the this very moment, currently in Japan for a secondment.

I have a feeling that the only viable option is to trade in this spec maxed out laptop for a new one. I believe is that there will continue to be keyboard issues and once Apple additional warranty expires, I will be up the proverbial creek.

Here's a real experience from the Glasgow, UK Apple Store - it seems the memo about prioritising keyboard issues for next day replacement hasn't reached them.

This is with a 2018 MacBook Pro. It has had intermittent issues mostly with the space key producing two spaces for each press, but also a few issues like the 'o' key not responding properly sometimes. The issues started when the MacBook was less than 6 months old.

23rd May - Genius Bar appointment (it took me forever to actually find an appointment, there's been hardly any availability for a long time). Agreed to do a repair, but they don't have the keyboard in stock, will contact me.

5th June - keyboard arrives in stock! However I'm go abroad on 11th for 2 weeks, and they say they can't do the repair before I go even if I get the laptop to them straight away. So agree to take it in when I come back.

24th June - return from holiday but part has been released and used in someone else's repair so it needs to be ordered again

8th July - get in to see the Genius Bar and they still don't have the keyboard in stock so order one

12th July - part arrives again; drop laptop off; told they're going to attempt to clean/replace the mechanism first, which will take at least 72 hours, if that fails then they'll replace the whole keyboard which will take 5-7 days /on top of/ the 72 hours.

15th July - told Apple have cleaned & replaced the mechanism on the two switches

16th July - told laptop is ready for pickup & pick up laptop.

So I'm now waiting to see if the issue is resolved or not, but as the problem has been intermittent it's going to be a few days at least before I know, and if it hasn't I will have to go through the whole 'order part' dance again.

Overall I'm going to be most unhappy if the issue hasn't been resolved this time; I'm at the point where I'm likely to return the laptop rather than go through this process again, I've been using a borrowed 2013 MacBook whilst this one was in for repair and it's such a joy using a laptop where I don't have to spend half my time going back and removing extra spaces / full stops that randomly get added.
