It’s a little weird to see Apple trying so hard to push iPhone sales. Make an SE2 for the small phone market without neutering it with less than current cameras and chip, drop price on XR to $649, XS to $899, XS Max $999. All of those models with sell. Lord knows they’ve got the capital to spend on the SE2 and can still make piles of money at reduced price points.

I could get on board with that pricing as long as the XS started at 128gb.

After reading many of the comments, I believe that there are some (or several) commenters who might be interested in reading "The Millionaire Next Door" by Stanley & Danko.

For those of us who can use the device to generate more income, then the incremental cost may be worthwhile. For those whose usage is not income-generating, it may be less worthwhile.

To be fair, though, sometimes one's image is important enough to justify the expenditure. I have been told by colleagues that in many places, people won't go to doctors who don't drive nice cars or live in oversized homes.

It's a world where we don't always prioritize the right things.

Maybe it's time to upgrade... to a 6s+.

I mean, my 6+ is a bit slow, it's kind of annoying sometimes. But I want a headphone jack, so the only upgrade path is the 6s+ unless I get a 7+ and do what that Strange Parts guy did and hack one into it.

And since the 6s+ is apparently not worth much now....

Seriously, folks, NEVER trade your phone in to Apple. Other people want your old one, and Apple will just shred it. Wipe it and eBay it, give it to a friend, talk some poor loser with an Android into switching by giving them an iPhone for really cheap.

Even if it's dead, eBay it as a parts phone. The independent repair shops always need parts phones.

There's a disconnect here that I don't get. Apple is supposedly in trouble and having to make unusual price cuts. But to me it seems like they've made less cuts than in the past.

Either 2 or 3 years ago I got an iPhone 7 around Black Friday, and it was literally half the cost. It was on Verizon, brand new, and you paid in monthly installments but they gave you credits so that that the 128 GB phone came out to around $350 or so (and they were out of 128 GB and gave me the 256 GB with no additional fee). There was no contract, but if you stopped Verizon service you paid off the balance of the phone without the credits. So kind of like an on-contract deal but with less risk. And this was the same year that the iPhone 7 had come out. It was the newest model.

Was that an anomaly? I'm certainly very price sensitive, and I already had an iPhone 5s. But to me it seemed like such a good deal I thought I'd grab it as my "new" phone. I've been very happy with both it and the iPhone 5s.

I have not seen such deals from carriers for the iPhones recently, but maybe I just wasn't looking. Even if another $350 flagship came along, I can't really justify it based on my personal needs. But if I hadn't already bought the iPhone 7, I'd snap up an iPhone XR for $350.

Apple will report record earnings for last quarter on or around Jan 30 2019. Revenues are going to be lower than their own guidance, but earnings will be huge.

So when you hear they are in trouble, think for yourself and look at their financial statements. Fake news is everywhere on every topic.

There is a reason for just about everything. Follow the money, and usually you can figure out the how and the why of anything.

Ditto.
Some folks confuse reticence to pony $1,000 or more with limited funds -- nothing of the sort.
They miss the point you just made -- short-term "stuff" versus life-long "experiences" (in my case, shared with my lovely wife).
But to each his/her own.

Meh, I would take a great phone I will enjoy daily for 3+ years over yet another long weekend at some generic touristy destination with my wife (including the mandatory vacation argument) any day. :p

Strange comment given that the XR is $30 cheaper than the 7 Plus originally sold for three years ago, and has a larger screen, Face ID, and better battery life, among other improvements.

When bananas are on sale at the grocery store do you think that it's a desperate ploy to move overpriced fruit?
[doublepost=1548456752][/doublepost]

What situation is that? Double the revenue and profits when compare to the last year Jobs was in charge?
[doublepost=1548456853][/doublepost]

I don't recall anyone at Apple saying that a $1,000 phone is cheap. But for those who can't afford a BMW, there's always a Fiesta for 1/5th the price that does the job just as well.

There is no sale in this case though? Just a desperate way to make the full price seem not as bad as it actually is.

Are these two really that bad? Are the sales figures still that low?

With the maximum trade in offer of $100, that is $550 and $800 for these models.

Maybe Apple should go to those prices across the board and hope for sales.

They just claimed that the XR was the best selling iPhone. Wonder if it is true and if there is a way to verify the claim.

Are you sure they have claimed it is the best selling iPhone (implying the best ever)? All claims I have seen have said it has been the best selling phone since it was released, which is cleverly ambiguous. The correct interpretation is that if you tally the sales of all iPhones only since the XR was released, the XR will have the highest tally. It does not mean it is selling better than previous iPhones at the time of their releases.
[doublepost=1548494291][/doublepost]Given the weak sales, how likely do people think it is that Apple will realize their various mistakes, probably the worst of which is removing the headphone jack, and reverse course?

Unfortunately, I think it is fairly unlikely, but I do gain a little hope every time I see them continue to make desperate efforts to sell more phones.

I have wanted a new iPhone for quite awhile now and can afford one, but there isn’t one I can feel good about buying. I would be very happy with an updated iPhone SE with a faster processor (and preferably a nearly edge-to-edge OLED screen, but not necessary).

For years I never even considered getting an Android phone, but if the current iPhone lineup doesn’t change substantially soon it is becoming fairly likely I will buy one.

It looks like Apple has increased the trade-in value for each model too. My iPhone 8 Plus was originally worth $350 but now it has increased to $370. I have a 6s Plus too and the value went up to $250 (from $150). I was considering trading in my 8 Plus before and get a XR for $33/month, but it was just not worth it. It looks like now Apple will give you the credit up front in stores so your monthly payment will be cut in half. Instead of paying $33/month and waiting for the trade-in credit, I get the credit right away and pay half the amount ($16/month) which isn't too bad. I'm still not pulling the trigger though .

I got £155 a couple of weeks ago for my 6 Plus. Today they offer £95.

Doubt you'll see deals like that, Black Friday deals were weak this year. My friend had a similar experience with AT&T. Two years ago the 7 was considered a minor upgrade from 6/6s, and it was around that sweet spot when carriers wanted to give you more incentive to keep their service. So both Apple and that carriers were motivated.

This year, it seems that Apple is the one motivated (carrier offers are typical, buy one get one or reduced lease fees which you get on any phone now).

I traded in a 7 plus and got a Xr. I got an extra $100, so for me this was an okay deal

The XR is a disgusting piece of crap. Should have never seen the daylight. More inferior it has an apple logo.
This is so disgusting I can’t even say.

No offense to people who love it, just MY opinion!
What makes it disgusting though? Screen quality? One lens?

Apple products have always been overpriced, but now it's just getting ridiculous. I'm in for the ecosystem (an important source of revenue), but holding off any further iPhone upgrades until Mr. Cook gets back in touch with reality. Just recently bought an iPad Pro and my wife got the MBA after 6 good years with previous models , but have no need for this new expensive iPhone X lineup. And XR feels like 5C all over again: overpriced and poorly built, when compared to XS.

It genuinely is refreshing to see someone with such common sense. It blows my mind that people squander money each year on 1k+ devices. I'd much rather spend it on my mortgage or going on holiday.
Going to see if my s.o. wants a new phone. For people who depend on their phones for their livelihood, it makes sense to update if your older phone is less useful due to size.

No offense at all. Seems like there are people who don’t share your opinion.

The sales of the iPhone 7 put the nail in the coffin for the headphone jack.

Maybe the decision on an updated SE will be rethought.

Can you elaborate? In what way is it disgusting? I’m assuming you likely have not compared it’s display side by side to the XS models? It lacks the zoom lens and 3D Touch, but otherwise is identical in nearly every discernible way to the XS models, while costing significantly less. If anything, the XR exposes the extreme premium price of the XS models.

I am going to say sales probably are that low. What incentive do people who bought a phone in the last two years have to upgrade? The phone market is so stale right now. I personally believe we are going to see a shift back to smaller phones in the second half of 2019 or early 2020.

My bad:eek:.

I went back and checked the wording - very cleverly, the claim for since launch. That tells us nothing, unless it was the Samsung IED sales after the "discovery":p!

I got re-read Tim's foray into teaching; Tim promotes STEM.

is there a limit to have many phones you can trade-in at Apple? For a gift card to get other items - not a phone.

Why has there been no damn trade in option for the X!!!??? It's irritating.

You can trade in your X and get $500 USD for it. They just don't advertise the trade-in values for the 8 Plus or X for some reason.

Seems Apple is becoming desperate to sell these phones, practically giving them away! Low sales numbers must be catching up......

Apple wants people who can’t afford an iPhone to still have one.
So desperate they haven’t even lowered prices?

They are marketing their products and trying to cram more sales than ever into 90 days and 365 days. You have to change tactics when you’re always needing to deliver more.

This is a good thing for consumers because you’re getting a better price on a newer, more capable model.

I see nothing desperate about it.

Apple is doing just fine, Tim is a real bussinessman and a good one at it. The problem is the market is saturated, every year another flagship phone is just to much... nobody needs that.... the phones are allready overpowered, a midrange can do the same basic stuff and for most people that is enough... The market is crazy there is no return point anymore, but they should better release a new phone every 2-3 years, then they would sell more....

To be honest I would be pretty tempted, but this isn't available in my country.
Thanks Apple for refusing my money.
