How is this different from what was previously offered? You don’t need to buy AppleCare? Seems similar to upgrade program

See that price - $449 for the XR and $699 for the XS? THAT is what they should have been priced at in the first place!

OMG, could you imagine if they actually released the XS for $699 and the XS Max for $799? They would be undercutting the flagship Samsung phones by ~$200-250 and the iPhone would be flying off the shelves!
Right now we'd be talking about how Apple sold an enormous record number of iPhones in the first quarter and the stock would be soaring.
Instead, the stock has plummeted and we're talking about how Apple dropped the ball badly on the pricing, all while we have to watch Apple's desperate attempts to sell them at a discount, which Apple has NEVER had to do up until now!

Oh yeah, and in the future, DO NOT SELL AN INFERIOR VERSION OF THE IPHONE!
It didn't work with the 5C and it didn't work with the XR.

Max is underpriced at $799.

Apple had an enormous run and then the stock dipped with the market. They are expected to release $84b in revenues. A huge number.

The XR is not inferior, any more than the galaxy is inferior because it’s not a note.

Wishful thinking and dream worlds are nice sometime.

Apple is doing just fine, Tim is a real bussinessman and a good one at it. The problem is the market is saturated, every year another flagship phone is just to much... nobody needs that.... the phones are allready overpowered, a midrange can do the same basic stuff and for most people that is enough... The market is crazy there is no return point anymore, but they should better release a new phone every 2-3 years, then they would sell more....

Apple is indeed doing fine. Technology is always advancing and I’m thinking that it is a complicated decision process for Apple to decide what to design and build every year. Life is short too! So I think it would be bad if they did not release new phones at least once per year. Competition probably pushes the development as well - it’s a very lucrative market and Apple has shown every year that they know how to attract the most money for their business and the cycle of developing new tech and pulling in healthy profits is continuing. Check again in 5 - 7 years.

Make hay while the sun shines! iPhones are the sixth sense of all people of earth - it’s transforming our civilization. Apple has the world by its tail! Think about how life has changed in the last decade or so. Some bad tech things, but also a lot of great tech things - all because of iPhone and copies of iPhone.

Apple must be struggling for sales now. Just saw here in Thailand that they are offering 10 months interest free to push sales. Apple never did this before and by the way this is for all products. Not just those two iPhones but all iPhones,iPads and MacBooks as well.

I’d rather put the £1000 towards a better holiday than just get a 0.0005% improved phone just to prove I’m the biggest Apple fan ever.

Maybe you used to buy iPhones because you are an Apple fan and now you project your behaviour onto others? I can tell you that all the people I know that buy and use Apple products, me included, regardless the amount and frequency of their spending, don't give a **** about Apple, the company, they only like the product, and in some cases, they have a lot of budget, so that for them spending $1000 has the same impact than for others spending 300.

Are you sure they have claimed it is the best selling iPhone (implying the best ever)? All claims I have seen have said it has been the best selling phone since it was released, which is cleverly ambiguous. The correct interpretation is that if you tally the sales of all iPhones only since the XR was released, the XR will have the highest tally. It does not mean it is selling better than previous iPhones at the time of their releases.
[doublepost=1548494291][/doublepost]Given the weak sales, how likely do people think it is that Apple will realize their various mistakes, probably the worst of which is removing the headphone jack, and reverse course?

Unfortunately, I think it is fairly unlikely, but I do gain a little hope every time I see them continue to make desperate efforts to sell more phones.

I have wanted a new iPhone for quite awhile now and can afford one, but there isn’t one I can feel good about buying. I would be very happy with an updated iPhone SE with a faster processor (and preferably a nearly edge-to-edge OLED screen, but not necessary).

For years I never even considered getting an Android phone, but if the current iPhone lineup doesn’t change substantially soon it is becoming fairly likely I will buy one.

Being “Cleverly ambiguous” is key to winning mind share these days. Apple said that the XR has been the best selling iPhone that they are selling since they started selling the XR iPhone. But yeah a lot of people will imply that it means it’s selling more than any other iPhone ever in history - but they didn’t say that . It doesn’t matter - it’s whether people just simply think something that matters the most. It is just like “Apple Misses big” headlines do not take into account that they will have record earnings this quarter. They missed on revenue, But they did also say that they are likely to have record earnings - but no reporter reports that! It’s also like claiming WikiLeaks is controlled by the Russians etc etc - Being cleverly ambiguous is a great tool when you know the audience is only half listening at any given moment. You can roll half truths into full on “without a doubt” fact that can really be hard to correct.

All it takes is a few doses over a few days of cleverly ambiguous jive talk and it becomes “truth“ “without a doubt“ and there is almost nobody to blame, and somethings might never get corrected - at least with the stock market things do get corrected :) It’s crazy how wrong analysts can be about AAPL stock - some things become self-fulfilling prophesy even :)

I don’t understand why this is a bad thing. Wouldn’t this help ppl upgrade who previously wouldn’t?

I read that the iPhone XR was the best selling iPhone last quarter. If you take into consideration that it was released “after” the other two more expensive models and released for a lot less means pricing is a huge issue these days.

For sure - but it’s not a sin or anything that Apple is doing wrong necessarily. Apple decided to make phones that cost Apple about $650 to manufacture, and they need to add 38% margin on top of that.

Apple isn’t gouging customers, they are just making some kickass tech with these high end iPhones.

I guess it is now to a point where some people think it might be more than they ever wanted to pay for a phone, but over time they will probably give in and admit that they want the latest and greatest iPhones because they spend 7 hours a day on the things! It’s an amazing iPhone addiction! A phenomenon as big as TV was in the 70s and 80s. I just watched a retro rerun of an old game show and the game show said that the average American spends seven hours in front of the TV - This was back in like 1979 and I almost forgot those days.

$453 from what I read. I find that number to be a bit on the high side. It retails for $1449 before tax. So well north of $1500 after taxes. I think it is less but I could be wrong. The iPad Pro that sells for almost $1800 should be under $500 as well.

For sure it’s good for sales, and even though I think retail price games are a bit dirty, I also know that every company does such things - so it’s all ok.

$453 or $650 - both are in the ballpark I’d say. $443 would be raw parts bom (bill of materials), not including other expenses. You are probably closer

38% margin on top and that’s about it.

Apple doesn’t want to admit that they are willing to drop prices, so they start playing these games just like the car makers with “instant rebates” instead of dropping the price of a new car

I think Apple does not want to fold too quickly but I reckon that they will have to make some sort of price adjustments to a certain degree as in the past they were looked up upon and for many good reasons. They still are looked up upon for many great reasons as well but now there is very fierce competition from China and the Chinese are getting batter at what they do day by day. Spend a week in Shenzhen, China then visit some factories and attend some trade shows and you will know what I am talking about.

The only reason Apple managed to not lose as many sales as they should have this last quarter is because of the fact that they added dual sim capabilities to their new smartphones which the Chinese loved until they found out they could not run dual apps on them like they could on the locally manufactured smartphones so this new dual sim feature was a half naked feature for them which is not very useful for all the businessmen in China. People in China would rather carry one smartphone instead of two. They need two WeChat apps as well along with other apps where they separate personal from business use and the locals travel often too.

Apple made a few mistakes, if they can fix these mistakes and lower prices a bit they will regain sales and market share in Asia.

Apple phones are now officially "budget" phones, with the new Samsung costing $2000. Boy howdy! Either someone is really misjudging the market, or tech fashion is really getting silly.
