And they probably die a hot death even faster.
My 2015 RMB died a hot death.

It's logicboard fried to a crisp under the sheer processing power of a Skype call whilst having a Word document open. And the kicker? In death, it of course rendered the soldered SSD inaccessible (unlike the similar MBP which has a backdoor/bypass port on the board), which combined with a corrupted Time Machine backup, made my life a misery earlier this year.

Loved the portability. But it's now a paperweight, a fate this lovely-looking but deeply flawed and functionally compromised model deserves.

Anyone thinking about buying one now, needs their heads examining.

A 2017 laptop that's significantly less processing power than their new phones (and still more expensive, even with the refurb discount).

What kind of upside down world are we living in?

The world where most make a living with the laptop and most find ways to waste time with their phone.

PowerBook Ti ages ago - 16 years later it still boots.
More than a tear of nostalgia here, remember buying my 1st gen TiBook and being genuinely in awe at what it represented, cutting edge design and tech. Followed a year later by her desktop supermodel the G4 Cube (which aged much better and still lives!)

One of the saddest days of my Mac-owning life was when that PB died, hinges creaking and paint stripping off her like a rusty old 1970s Alfa Romeo.

Those were indeed the days *sigh*

finally some news about macs and mac os, all i need now is a new high sierra beta or GM version.
apple prices for refurbished items are a joke, for that is better to buy it brand new, never used before, if you are going to give a discount for a refurbished unit just make sure is a fair price cut. but they are always people that think that they are saving something and they take the bait.

As long as people line up to buy these overpriced toys, Apple will keep raising the price little-by-little. It's a great marketing ploy. The prices are crazy, but some people just have to have them and will pay anything. Enough people, apparently, that Apple keeps selling record numbers of these overpriced toys.
It's all about the monthly payment. Carrier subsidies, financing, and upgrade programs all enable large numbers of people to buy phones they'd unlikely buy if they had to pull the money out of their pocket.

*shrug* Each to their own. I've bought several different apple refurbs over the years. Everything has been completely indistinguishable from brand new. The only differences were the box they came in and of course the price. Same warranty. Can't really see why someone would want to pay more. But whatever works for ya I guess.

I though ipx is on par or beating this?

ipx has a physical keyboard, 12 inch screen, and can run software outside a walled garden with Apple's blessings? I must have missed that article.

You're comparing Apples and Oranges here.

I bought a 2012 mac mini refurb right after that 2014's came out so refurb was the only way to get it. It probably was truly a brand new one in a white box that was in the supply chain when Apple killed the 2012 models, but the unit I got was perfect.

Other than that; as long as I'm able to get the teacher pricing/back to school bonus, Apple gives me little reason not to buy new Macs. I fully admit I regret buying the 2017 MBP instead of a 2015 refurb, and my Solo3's are still sitting unopened after 2 months.

So $1099 for a refurb MacBook with 256GB or $1149 for a 256GB iPhone X. Can't believe these prices.

Check out those Canadian prices...
$1,459 for a refurb MacBook with 256GB
or $1,529 for 256GB iphone X ... that's $1,728 after taxes :eek::eek:

I can understand all the negative comments about these devices being over-priced - but honestly no other non-mac device come with the same finish and quality apart from maybe the new MS Surface laptop. I personally had horrible experiences with all my surface tablets, that is why I avoid MS products. I would recommend a refurbed macbook over any other laptop provided your goal is to have an extremely lightweight durable device mainly for spreadsheets/coding on the go.

My first “new” Mac was a Powermac G5 dual 2.0 that came from the refurb store. Worked well for years, alongside the refurbished iBook G4 that sat next to it.

Let people with a stigma buy new, saving more refurbished products for those of us to buy.

Though today, I tend to troll places like Swappa and buy devices that are used with AppleCare coverage on them. More risky, but even deeper savings, when I go the used route.

"And I wouldn't buy any portable computer with less than 1 TB storage, and much less if it only has that crappy Intel HD Graphics garbage video chip."

I have the 2016 Core m7 model (512 gig) and its fine for all the tasks I throw at it. That said, you sure don't want to edit video or play Crysis on it.

$200 OFF a used and repaired computer is not really a 'good deal'.

And I wouldn't buy any portable computer with less than 1 TB storage, and much less if it only has that crappy Intel HD Graphics garbage video chip.

Meh, these are for students. I had one and upgraded to the Pro & now I regret it. These things are LIGHT! I just wish they came with a 14” screen. :(

The problem I have with Macbooks/mbp is the hefty RAM and SSD prices... since the Macbooks will a last a few years and difficult to upgrade, I'm always stuck wanting to get more RAM/SSD to futureproof at time of purchase.

Then I have the dilemma: do i purchase new low-end mbp or should i get a refurb/used model with more ram/ssd.

Meh... Crazy that Apple still using this CoreM garbage and Huawei/Microsoft putting i5 and i7U series in passive cooling shells. Apple needs pick up the game, like yesterday.

Somewhere between the unrivalled unit sales, unparalleled customer satisfaction for 13 years running, and the 'most valuable company in the world by some 20%' title, I start to doubt your claim that they need to "pick up the game".

Some people understand consumers. Some don't. i7U means absolutely nothing to most people.

For those of us who aren't making our living by editing media, the 12" is a brilliant piece of kit. I've always got a full Unix desktop OS with me and it barely weighs anything. And the build quality blows the competition out of the water.

It especially means nothing to people who by the 12". No offense. But it's true. The people I know who have one don't even know what a "spec" is. They just need a device for school, and it's a good option for that.

Exactly.

It's not just that they don't know - it's that they don't care. And if companies like Apple get it right, they shouldn't ever have to.

It's still trash for word processing or any accuracy involving typing more than a few sentences at a time. I have the most recent generation, & had the one before, & both have terminally sticky keys , which Apple is still reticent to admit is a problem. This is an enthusiast's computer made for light internet surfing.

I wouldn't pay $800 for a brand new one ever again. Are the macbook pros key travel- & action this awful? I'm considering returning to chromebook.

On right - next to it is my first work issued design laptop - Pismo Bronze (Also still boots) it was old even at the time but still worked for a scrub. Yep... it was one of my biggest WOW moments in tech - but I came in the last Gen. People had macs not because they were shinny and expensive but because they were like nothing else at ANY price.

yeah the paint was a fiasco on the Ti... but like an old rusty 1970 Alpha Romeo, it gave it character :D

i completely understand your point, yes apple have high quality control but for a few bucks i rather buy the device brand new but everybody has different opinions and point of view and i completely understand and respect your opinion and point of view, but me personally i would not buy it refurbished unless they offer a better discount price that i actually feel is worth it, regards

The 2015 MacBook Pro's all had removeable SSD's. Did you mean 2016?

Edit: never mind. I see you meant Macbook now.
