I'm also curious to know how many people pre-ordered on the first day, as for the first time I'm one of them. I got the 32GB even if €100 to add 16GB of flash memory sounds terribly wrong... otherwise I'm fine with Italian prices, I can deduct VAT so it's very reasonable for such a nice toy.

First off, Hello, new member to forums here

Is there an option to "reserve for pick up" at a UK store?

I read that for the US release there was the option to reserve to collect from the apple store on the release date, does anyone know if apple will offer the same in the UK, i've looked all over the apple retail pages and can not find any information on it.

Thanks

Hello new member ;)
I think that the pick-up was a US-thing, may not be done in the UK or other countries, but in all honesty I didn't check anything about it.

Beside when that have been done in the US people could have it reserved and then change their mind once they were picking it up, which means that if you go in the store you actually don't need to reserve it.

In fact my idea was just go there, test it and buy it. IMO I don't think they will run out.

Any ideas why the iPad is at least E20 cheaper in Spain...

Germany, France and Italy all E499, Spain E479 for the 16GB wifi

Strangely Germany E714 for the 64GB wifi Spain E679

???

Euro never have been converted at a same currency when due to products.
You will see price differences in any product you'll look up in Europe, it's nothing strange.

James Gosling on the iPad

"I know I'm deeply not the target market, so my disillusionment probably doesn't matter. But I've watched my twelve-year-old daughter play with it. She likes it for playing games, but oddly enough, she seems to prefer my iPhone because it's a more comfortable size, and it's easier to take along. She browses the web with it, but as soon as she starts typing complicated URLs or Google queries, she heads over to the laptop.

And then there's the control-freak's-fantasy-developer-model. Yikes.... Enough has been written by others about that nightmare.

My fantasy Apple product is simple: stop treating OS X like abandon-ware."

- James Gosling, creator of the Java programming language (www.nighthacks.com)

Somehow, that says it all. Oh, and according to Yahoo's statistics, the average iPad user is 35 to 44 years old and is rather wealthy with an above average income.

Well. Let's see if and how the sales in Europe will change that statistics.

My personal bet is still on Android based devices, because of the open nature of that platform.

Congrats to international folks. Maybe they will be happy now.. Maybe??

No, not happy at all. They forgot Portugal but they didn't forgot Spain which is side by side. Maybe next year we'll have iPads in Portugal. Bad Stevie !

Are you talking about Android tablets or devices in general?
I don't think that Android will be taking over.

Open nature of the platform? What you mean by that?
Aren't iPhone and iPad open as much the Android is?

iPad data plans in Italy

Also 3 has announced his iPad data plan:

one month, 3 GB cap, 5 Euro

The 3 GB are allowed only under the 3 network coverage, which in Italy is still quite weak.

No unlimited data plan, at the moment, from 3.

Still waiting for TIM offerings. Nothing announced yet.

Oh, and according to Yahoo's statistics, the average iPad user is 35 to 44 years old and is rather wealthy with an above average income.

Remember this is a (so-called) "new class of device" that has been out for only just over one month (US only). That "average iPad user" is the first wave of early adopters. Don't read too much into who the ultimate average user will be.

Yeah my plan was just to head to the store on the day if there was no reserve option, I was just worried they would sell out.

I just ordered my 16gb iPad Wifi + 3G :D

total cost = £520.50 (£529 - £13.50 cashback from quidco.com + £5 quidco membership)

Has your Apple transaction tracked on Quidco yet? Pre-ordered mine this morning and nothing tracked so far.

Pre-orders in J-Land

Now we can place our orders here in Japan and pricing it is OK but 3Gs cannot be bought online, which sucks badly. The closest Apple store is 2hr driving.:(

Well, I guess you can be happy if you live in the selected international countries. For us in Scandinavia(Denmark, Sweden, Norway), one of Apple´s strongholds, no Ipad whatsoever, not even in second wave in july.

Bad bad Apple.... And we are being mocked by the Ipad "Magical" ad on the front page of the local Apple site, every time we visit....

from SJ: You always have Nokia...

Oh :( Can't you take a sail over to mainland UK and purchase one? Or are you in the market for the 3G model? I'm sure you'll be happy when you finally get it either way eh? :D

Or go to Northern Ireland, was still part of the UK at the last count.

"Dear Steve,

I just wanted to say how pleased I am now I can order myself the great iPad!

Regards,

Bill"

Jobs replies;

"Educate yourself. It is not great. It is magical. It features killer graphics, too."

EPIC!

btw: i stayed up late to be one of the first to order..18 days to go until i get my 32GB iPad 3G :).. damn i was so tired at work today..but it was worth it..i guess..

Yeah my plan was just to head to the store on the day if there was no reserve option, I was just worried they would sell out.

I checked it. Sadly, they don't offer it outside the USA...

But time will tell why (as I asked Steve)...

The release date is a bit of a shame as I'll be going on vacation that day so I'm not going to risk ordering. This probably means that I'll end up waiting a bit longer since the device will probably sellout immediately but I'm happy enough to do so. This assumes that the wait for a device isn't the same as the wait I had for 3GS in Belgium last year...

Ugh.
Apple really has to step up the production volume.

You think they wouldn't if they could?
They've said themselves several times that demand has overwhelmed them and they're doing all they can to catch up.

Of course I can say that with the complacency of someone that ordered his (64GB 3G, if you must know) first thing this morning - but it's been painful (and will continue to be painful for a couple more weeks) waiting for the UK release - especially as a developer who wants to test his app on the device before releasing it (vConqr HD). It must suck even more to be a developer in one of the countries that have not even been announced yet.

I nearly gave in and got mine imported, but I'm still finishing my code so can wait a bit longer.

Different VAT rates? I believe Germany has a copyright tax of €15 which also goes on top.

SIM locked in Japan

apple just confirmed that the 3G model to be sold in Japan is SIM locked to softbank.
it was generally thought that since all* other markets have / are moving to SIM carrier-free iPhones and iPads that Japan too would not be locked to a specific carrier.
this does not look good for an unlocked iPhone 4G in Japan in June.
