That's seems like an experiment to see if they can do some upselling. "hey since you are buying a phone, why not get a watch to go with that, will even take $50 from the whole transaction."

Personally, upselling has never worked with me, and is not really an apple thing, so it will be interesting to see if the experiment works.

I love my 6s and my SS. You haters gonna hate, but find none of that here.

If they feel the Apple Watch is too expensive, hopefully they'll fix it in Gen 2. That would make it much easier to recommend: If the Apple Watch Sport started at £249.

Upselling is not really an Apple thing? 16GB devices say hi.

Indeed.

That would make it a stocking filler. I think the problem is that most people simply don't have a problem with getting notifications on their iPhones, and health and fitness only attracts a very small audience.

As others have said, I am skeptical that wearables will ever take off. It's not really attractive having a cold, hard mechanical object chained around you the whole time.

Not even a mechanical watch? Rolex? Breitling?

Agreed. My Apple Watch is a great fitness product but that's not for everyone.

Disagree here. I bought the Sport and picked up an off-brand link bracelet and get many compliments on it.

Guys...it clearly says this promotion is only available in certain stores in California and Massachusetts. If Apple Watch was the big flop you all say it is, they would do the promotion nationwide.

Yeah, or they would have lowered the price across the board at the September event.

Odd to think if they did that most people (including myself) would immediately think "Oh, the Watch isn't selling" and judge Apple harshly for it, even though they dropped the iPhone's price by $200 in September 2007, and that product clearly didn't fail.

Everyone is interested in the Apple Watch, but they just haven't gotten one yet.

The reason why? People think that the Apple Watch is too expensive.

People will gladly spend the big bucks on the iPhone, but hardly on any of Apple's other products. Especially new ones.

Hate to say it, but this is an easy way for Apple to move their stock of Apple Watches; they're clearly not selling.

It was a nice idea to see if Apple could make a success of wearables; they could hardly know that it was going to become Newton 2.0.

Regardless of its failure, I'm glad that it has brought so much joy to many here at MacRumors; long may they enjoy their Apple Watches.

Don't see $50 off being much of a prod ...

Well this is new. Apple's never done a deal like a normal retailer before. Apple Watch sales must not be as strong as hoped.

Perhaps, but it's interesting that it is limited to certain markets. I wonder if they are planning a larger rollout as part of a holiday sales push.

Wow, this article sure brought out the anti-watch crowd!

During Apple's earnings, they did provide a clue on AW sales. They indicated that over 100% of the growth in the "Other" category was from Apple Watch. The growth was $1.7B, and we know iPod sales are declining, so that means they sold over $1.7B in watches... https://forums.macrumors.com/thread...hes-during-fiscal-year.1933133/#post-22171101 . That is with a partial year, and it not being available globally, and no channel sales kicking in until the very end. Stands to reason next fiscal year they should hit $5B pretty easily, even without a new model.

I'm quite happy with my AW and getting a lot of value from it in my daily workflow. Its a more personal product than an iPhone, and requires an iPhone, so the sales will never get to iPhone numbers. I have no idea what their expectations were, but seems to me its doing pretty well. I think this promotion is just like someone mentioned... an opportunity to upsell. I don't think its enough to cause someone not already thinking about the watch to buy one, and there aren't a huge number of folks that can drop the coin on a new phone and new watch at the same time.

As always, time will tell how this all plays out.

Not very Apple but with Angela Ahrendts in charge it doesn't seem that out of place. She comes from a traditional Retail background where discounts and sales are the norm. This could even be a test to see if a price drop would boost net profits everywhere.

This promotion is literally being offered in two states, only at Apple Stores.

Apple sells the Watch all over the world, through a multitude of different retailers.

So...

I agree. Also wearables won't take off because consumers don't have the appetite for yet another screen to buy and upgrade. We already have TVs that we upgrade every 5-10 years, desktops/laptops (sometimes more than one) that we upgrade every 2-5 years, tablets that we upgrade every 2-3 years, and smartphones that we upgrade every 2 years. And electronics companies think they can sell us another screen? No thank you.

Still can't beat the near-perfect 42 mm Sport I got on eBay for $275! Would never buy the first generation of an Apple product brand new; too risky. But for that cheap I figured it was worth it.

Simple, apple watch does not sell well...
But then they'd have dropped prices across the board, and in all stores. This sounds like a test marketing campaign, which is unusual in itself for Apple. Perhaps they want to try to promote Apple Watch and iPhone as a "pair." They've tried this to some extent before, offering a combined AppleCare+ for Apple Watch and iPhone, but they quietly discontinued that.
