Apple who don't do discounts esp on new hardware - lol, how bad are the sales...
A $50 discount on a $350-550 product in a handful of stores, provided you make a $650 purchase at the same time is a "desperate move"? It amounts to less than a 5% discount in most cases.Desperate times call for desperate measures
Not even a mechanical watch? Rolex? Breitling?
Uh, the Watch is 6-month old hardware.Apple who don't do discounts esp on new hardware - lol, how bad are the sales...
I'm confused...why are they offering this promotion only in select stores in the Bay Area and Boston metro? I don't recall Apple stores ever doing local promotions like this before.
Seems like a good way to piss off customers who happen to be in the market for an iPhone and an Apple Watch and have their pick of several Apple stores but don't know about this promo, don't go to a store that's participating in the deal, and find out about the deal after the purchase is made at another store.
Exactly. I'm baffled as to the point. Market testing to see if a promo helps sales? Wha? I can't see how $50 would sell me on an AW if I was on the fence. It barely pays for a sport band (tax, etc.Guys...it clearly says this promotion is only available in certain stores in California and Massachusetts. If Apple Watch was the big flop you all say it is, they would do the promotion nationwide.
Hmm, a 5% discount on a combined purchase of a Watch and iPhone in a handful of stores is a sign of desperation?I can sense Apple's desperation from the sales of the watch
Useless for you. Very useful for me. I don't care if Apple sells 1 million watches or 100 million.Haters gonna hate, defenders gonna defend...bottomline, watch is indeed a useless accessory.
Apple has started a new limited time in-store promotion that offers customers $50 off an Apple Watch Sport or Apple Watch with the purchase of any new iPhone, including the latest iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, the company confirmed to MacRumors. Apple Watch Edition and Apple Watch Hermès models are ineligible for the discount.

The promotion is available at participating Apple Store locations in California and Massachusetts, including Burlingame, Chestnut Street, Corte Madera, Hillsdale, San Francisco and Stonestown in the Bay Area, and Boylston Street, Burlington, CambridgeSide and Chestnut Hill in the Boston metro area.
Apple confirmed that the promotion runs from October 30 through November 15, 2015, and is not available online. The deal does not require purchasing AppleCare+ or other accessories and add-ons. The offer is only valid when the qualifying iPhone and Apple Watch are purchased together on one transaction.
(Thanks, Robert!)

It's probably a test. Perhaps they plan to launch a larger promotion at a later date and want to see if this would be worthwhile.
Annnnd here come the haters. "Oh! This proves it. The Apple Watch is a flop. I knew it! Blah, blah, blah...."
Well, it's an awful idea. It's completely unnecessary to "test" discounts and promotions. Who wouldn't want to save money?!? They should've extended the promo to all stores but only made it valid for one weekend or something like that if they wanted to do a limited trial. Making it valid for only certain stores in a metro area is simply a bad idea.
Indeed.
That would make it a stocking filler. I think the problem is that most people simply don't have a problem with getting notifications on their iPhones, and health and fitness only attracts a very small audience.
As others have said, I am skeptical that wearables will ever take off. It's not really attractive having a cold, hard mechanical object chained around you the whole time.
This is a new up sell idea from the head of retail. I do not think it has to do with inventory movement.
I would probably buy an apple watch sport for.. $150.
Plus Apple is already well versed in upselling. iPad mini for $249 but hey for only $50 more you can get the much better iPad mini 2. iPad mini 3 for $399 but for only $100 more you can get a much better device in the iPad Air. And then of course the storage options: for only $100 more you can get 4x the storage! In fact I wouldn't be surprised if this was Phil Schiller's idea.Bingo!
They are trying to get people who just bought an iPhone to spend even more money. If it were about moving inventory, the price cut would be across the board. 9to5Mac mentioned that Target will be offering similar discounts on bundles.
This isn't a BOGOF (which truly is a sign of desperation, which Samsung resorted to when the Galaxy S5 wasn't selling). It's a teaser to tempt someone already spending money to spend a little more.
