As an experiment, I bought a Pebble classic 6 months ago for $99. I figured before spending $400 on an Apple Watch I would first try something simple. The Classic is very basic; time, date, step tracking, notifications and a few other things. They claim 5-7 days on a full charge.

Frankly, I am not convinced it's worth it at $99....let alone $400. I know I know the Apple watch has more features, but for me that isn't really a big deal. I just hate having another thing to wear and charge simple for the convenience of not removing my phone from my pocket.....and let's be clear, these wearables don't do much without a smartphone in your pocket. So, you are going to have to carry a phone with you regardless, and a smartphone is much better at almost everything than a smartwatch. It is sitting there in your pocket just waiting to be used.

Well, if I feel this way about a 5 day battery at $99, then I am pretty sure how I will feel about 1 day battery for $400.

My two cents.

I'm confused...why are they offering this promotion only in select stores in the Bay Area and Boston metro? I don't recall Apple stores ever doing local promotions like this before.

Seems like a good way to piss off customers who happen to be in the market for an iPhone and an Apple Watch and have their pick of several Apple stores but don't know about this promo, don't go to a store that's participating in the deal, and find out about the deal after the purchase is made at another store.

It's probably a test. Perhaps they plan to launch a larger promotion at a later date and want to see if this would be worthwhile.

Guys...it clearly says this promotion is only available in certain stores in California and Massachusetts. If Apple Watch was the big flop you all say it is, they would do the promotion nationwide.
Exactly. I'm baffled as to the point. Market testing to see if a promo helps sales? Wha? I can't see how $50 would sell me on an AW if I was on the fence. It barely pays for a sport band (tax, etc. :) ). One of the weirdest promos I've seen in a while. (And as you can see, I have a SS AW...)

ETA: @KPOM beat me!

I can sense Apple's desperation from the sales of the watch
Hmm, a 5% discount on a combined purchase of a Watch and iPhone in a handful of stores is a sign of desperation?

It isn't as if Apple hasn't tweaked the pricing of products before. The iPhone is the obvious example, but the iPad pricing has been tweaked. Apple may be seeing if this increases impulse purchases of Apple Watches. If so, then they might offer it after Black Friday across the board. They are pitching the Apple Watch and Apple Watch Sport as stocking stuffers. Plus it's peak iPhone sale season, so why not experiment a little to see what helps make the Watch move.

Even at $299, it's still one of the pricier watches out there.

Apple has started a new limited time in-store promotion that offers customers $50 off an Apple Watch Sport or Apple Watch with the purchase of any new iPhone, including the latest iPhone 6s and iPhone 6s Plus, the company confirmed to MacRumors. Apple Watch Edition and Apple Watch Hermès models are ineligible for the discount.

The promotion is available at participating Apple Store locations in California and Massachusetts, including Burlingame, Chestnut Street, Corte Madera, Hillsdale, San Francisco and Stonestown in the Bay Area, and Boylston Street, Burlington, CambridgeSide and Chestnut Hill in the Boston metro area.

Apple confirmed that the promotion runs from October 30 through November 15, 2015, and is not available online. The deal does not require purchasing AppleCare+ or other accessories and add-ons. The offer is only valid when the qualifying iPhone and Apple Watch are purchased together on one transaction.

Well, it's an awful idea. It's completely unnecessary to "test" discounts and promotions. Who wouldn't want to save money?!? They should've extended the promo to all stores but only made it valid for one weekend or something like that if they wanted to do a limited trial. Making it valid for only certain stores in a metro area is simply a bad idea.

I understand that only certain stores opt participate in deals when a company has a mix of corporate stores and franchise stores but Apple doesn't have franchise stores. I've never heard of a corporate store from any company not offering the same deals in the same geographic area as any other corporate store in the chain...until now.

It's a small discount for a bundle purchase. If Apple just wanted to reduce the price of the Apple Watch by $50, then yes, it would be dumb just to offer it in certain stores. But since it requires the purchase of an iPhone to qualify, this could give them an "apples-to-apples" comparison of up-sell rates in markets where the discount is offered and markets where it isn't. If it boosts up-sell rates by more than 5%, it may be worthwhile to expand it. But if it doesn't, then it probably isn't worth it and Apple will try something else (which could include offering no discounts).

Indeed.

That would make it a stocking filler. I think the problem is that most people simply don't have a problem with getting notifications on their iPhones, and health and fitness only attracts a very small audience.

As others have said, I am skeptical that wearables will ever take off. It's not really attractive having a cold, hard mechanical object chained around you the whole time.

It will eventually warm up unless you are cold blooded!

As I get older and my eyes get weaker, I can't squint enough to see that little type.
May need a flavor flav type watch if I even ever wanted one.

Pull the iPhone out of the pocket and check what needs checking.

Done. $$ saved.

This is a new up sell idea from the head of retail. I do not think it has to do with inventory movement. They are just now coming online with there secondary sales channel. If they had an overstock with secondary sales filling out they would just stop production. This is an attempt to get market penetration through up selling. I was in today to get my iPhone replaced and i was talking about how i service several clients who have iPhones they were all about setting me up a Biz account. This to me is not a far stretch and just trying to be dynamic. The idea is if you pay 0 down for your iPhone you normally would have dropped close to 300 on said iPhone for the intro fee. They want to see if they can funnel that money you were going to spend upfront into something like an apple watch. This is a really smart play to see if that idea pans out. I think people will go well i gave you no money for this iPhone sure why not i always was curious about the watch boom instant sale.

Bingo!

They are trying to get people who just bought an iPhone to spend even more money. If it were about moving inventory, the price cut would be across the board. 9to5Mac mentioned that Target will be offering similar discounts on bundles.

This isn't a BOGOF (which truly is a sign of desperation, which Samsung resorted to when the Galaxy S5 wasn't selling). It's a teaser to tempt someone already spending money to spend a little more.

I think this is more useful as a reminder that the products go together than a genuine "discount" bundle. Yes, rare for Apple to do this, but I can sort of see why they're doing it.

I would probably buy an apple watch sport for.. $150.

Not me. I'm really just not interested in something I have to charge, sync, and all that nonsense. Apple got me to ditch my cheap Swatch watch when I got my first iPhone. I don't think I'm ever going back, even if watches becomes real phones (not needing an iphone in proximity). The screen is just too small to do much.

Plus Apple is already well versed in upselling. iPad mini for $249 but hey for only $50 more you can get the much better iPad mini 2. iPad mini 3 for $399 but for only $100 more you can get a much better device in the iPad Air. And then of course the storage options: for only $100 more you can get 4x the storage! In fact I wouldn't be surprised if this was Phil Schiller's idea.
