Ah yes, so much for the refined status Apple seemed to be aiming for at the beginning.

Maybe Hermes will give a discount on the Watch when you buy it with a Birken Bag? ;-)

The Apple Watch Sport and Apple Watch were always intended to be mass market products.

I do like my Apple Watch Hermes, though. :)

Exactly. I'm baffled as to the point. Market testing to see if a promo helps sales? Wha? I can't see how $50 would sell me on an AW if I was on the fence. It barely pays for a sport band (tax, etc. :) ). One of the weirdest promos I've seen in a while. (And as you can see, I have a SS AW...)

ETA: @KPOM beat me!

Maybe looking at future potential bundling for instore?

$50 won't make up for appalling battery life!

18 hours of mixed use. Even if real world use is 2 hours short of advertised (and most rumours say Apple have under-promised and over-delivered on battery life) it would take me from a 5.30am start to 9.30pm. Not bad for a device the fraction of the size of my phone.

Keep in mind: Same happened wirh the original iPhone. And we know what happened later...

The reason Apple ended up dropping the price $200 is because they weren't selling. Since the Watch is an accessory to the iPhone people don't actually need, I would assume the same outcome for the watch. However, I do think this will increase impulse purchases, just like people who would have never considered the iPod Touch found them quite useful when Apple gave those away for free.

Oh wait, except when they used to give out FREE iPod Touches with the purchase of new Macs.

Thankfully someone mentioned this. And we all know what happened to the iPod, right? ;-)

Remember the keynote; this was hailed (and in periodicals and interviews) as the next iPhone level product. The next great "WOW!!" that Apple launched. Something we had to have.
From that perspective it is a failure.
As an accessory it looks to be doing okay.
When was it hailed as the next iPhone level product? The fact that it requires an iPhone meant it was never going to be at the same level (by definition it would get only some fraction of iPhone customers). The fact that Apple said since 6 months before it went on sale that results would be buried in "Other" meant Apple knew it, as well.

i like the concept, played with them in store. But they should be standalone device, without need an Iphone.

They almost are. If ATT would allow me to make wifi calls from the watch the way TMobile does, I would have very little use for my iPhone, in most places I use my phone.

Go back and watch that keynote (think it's still on YouTube somewhere) and check some back issues of WSJ/NYT/etc...
It was really keyed up. I do suspect that Apple hedged in the event it wasn't an instant hit.

Of course it was keyed up. Tim Cook had promised to launch a new product category in 2014, and this was the fulfillment of that promise. A new "hobby" like the original Apple TV (or even the new Apple TV) wasn't going to cut it. What we know from Apple's 10-K is that Apple has sold at least $1.7 billion related to the Apple Watch, and likely more since Tim Cook said it sold better in the September quarter than the June quarter, and Luca Maestri said it accounted for well over the $900 million increase in "Other" sales in the June quarter. That's more than the iPhone sold in its first 6 months.

So that's why at launch, both were only sold at exclusive luxury fashion boutiques, where they continue to be sold? I'm sure Maxfield and Colette are thrilled to be selling the same thing you can buy at Target for $50 off when you buy an iPhone, something those stores don't also sell.

It sold pretty well until it was essentially replaced by the iPhone.

There's a lot of revisionist history going on here. The iPod was in decline the moment the iPhone was released. And it was selling so well Apple gave it away with a MaBook? Theres virtually no market for the iPod now, yet Apple just released a bran new iPod Touch with the latest technology, to a dwindling market segment. Why? And if they would do that for a product that's selling to a limited audience, then why wouldn't they do the same thing with the Watch.

I don't know why people are so obsessed over how well the Watch is doing ... It's clearly doing at least as well as the iPod Touch. But, it's not doing as well as Apple wants, so they are changing their tactic pretty radically. No big deal. The watch is not doomed, but it is becoming something very different than where it started out ...

Could I live without it, .. sure. But, all the little conveniences add up, and make it worth it for me - The one benefit that's not immediately apparent until you have the watch, is the signicance that it's always there and easy to get to. Not always the case for the phone.

This. I was worried I'd get the watch and find I don't use it enough. But it's actually the opposite that happened, I got the watch and I'm using it for things I didn't even think I'd use it for. I can see the argument that it's not for everyone, but I don't get the hate for it. If you don't like it and think it would be useless to you... Don't get one. But don't try to diminish the opinions of others who have and use one, and enjoy it. I mean the Mac Pro isn't for me, and likely doesn't sell as well as other macs, but I'm not going to tell everyone that's buying one that it's a useless and overpriced product.

With all that being said the Apple Watch could stand to be a lot cheaper. Personally, I'm finding mine very useful and I don't really want to go back to not wearing one. It adds a layer of convenience in so many different ways it's hard to even explain. It's just there and it does things quicker/easier than the phone, or things I wouldn't even have bothered to do on my phone at all.

I'm glad Apple is doing discounts of any form on any scale. Discounts are always welcome in my opinion.

Interesting "blunder" that has sold at least $1.7 billion in six months. And I'm enjoying mine quite nicely, thank you. Used it to tell Siri to turn off my Hue lights last night. Bought my lunch with it today. It tracks my activities, provides quick access to reminders, and quick glances at emails and messages. Unlocks my door when I get home. Wakes me up in the morning. Tells me time and weather with a glance at my wrist. And it will only get better from here.

Glad your happy. Should have waited till you upgraded your phone. Could have saved $50. ;)

Also, I know it's not entirely the same thing. But Apple used to give iPod touches away for free with a Mac purchase. Did we think the iPod touch was doomed when that was going on? All I really remember is thinking they were trying to get more people into the iOS experience. Kinda seems like the same thing, whilst not nearly as an attractive deal, that they're doing with a watch discount with people already using one of their other platforms.

Yeah. If I'm honest, I think we need more than a year to see how successful this will be. We haven't even had a hardware update yet, and people are proclaiming the thing a failure.

I agree. Have to see how this fleshes out over time. Worrying point; is it tied to the fitness band craze or can it stand on its' own?

Not disagreeing with you. What it was hailed to be and what it is are two different things.
Hailed as an iPhone equal in profit. Is a decent portion of the Other profit column.

Dude what are you and the rest of the Apple newbies talking about?

Maybe you weren't born yet but the Original iPhone was DISCOUNTED and people like me that bought one was issued a REFUND once the price was adjusted down -- yea by Apple and STEVE JOBS..

The majority saying "they never do this" are ridiculously misinformed.

"Apple newbies" ? Since when did you know anything about my life? Mac, iPad, iPod and iPhone user since 2006, FYI.
