A very un-Apple like promotion.
Proof positive Apple is squirming.

Millions of dollars spent on various promotions world wide and the massive display case taking up a lot of space, going ignored as customers watch it gathering dust in the store has got to be an embarrassment even for the big ego narcissistic Apple Culture

I must say I didn't think it would be so widely ignored.

Glad your happy. Should have waited till you upgraded your phone. Could have saved $50. ;)

Bought it long before I upgraded my phone. Would have been nice to save $50. But if saving money was my objective I wouldn't be using Apple products. :D

Not sure what store you're frequenting. I'm in the Apple Store every couple of weeks on average. I see someone looking at and buying watches every time I'm there.

In store - sure - they appear vey nice - well built, good display - but ultimately poor battery life is an absolute show stopper, for me.

Do you wear a watch while you sleep?
Even if you do... if you could part from it just in the am while you shower & shave, you'd be fine. The other poster is correct... you're making up issues.

But I mean have you actually owned one and used it for a week, two weeks?

I say that because otherwise it's impossible to pass judgement on the battery life.

If you look at the Apple Watch forum, and people who've reviewed it, almost nobody is complaining about the battery life. You can charge it overnight and it will very easily last a day.

(Of course, if you're comparing to a normal watch, then yes, the battery life is worse. But that's not really a like for like comparison.)

Yes I do wear a watch / health band - the gap is narrowing between the two - for sleep timing, and also I wear it in the water too ( so water protection is a necessity ).

Making up issues? Good Battery life is important to *me*.

What do you people not understand - personal preference and needs? It isn't a one fits all
.

I'm glad your happy with your purchase, but limited battery life doesn't suit everyone.

And yes, it is possible to pass judgement on the battery life without using it for an extended period... see above paragraph.

My wife's work is giving them out to their employees. She doesn't want it, so is trying to give it to me. But, it's still sitting in the box unopened. I just don't have the motivation to like something I really don't need. Apple did a horrible job trying to exactly explain why I need this. Why do I need to have something strapped to my wrist that doesn't look good, another device to keep charged, and one that does nothing that my iPhone (which is glued to my hand all day) doesn't already do? I can't sell it, because it still technically belongs to her work.

Here's my take on the Apple Watch. First, the branding was off the mark. We all know the names, so I won't go into details, but the names are horrible. They don't elicit any kind of emotional connection whatsoever. Second, and probably the most important, the product was just not ready. The software wasn't there. Finally, the most obvious problem stemming from the first two issues is the price. I remember when the iPod first came out it was considered "expensive" for its capabilities, but I could still purchase the mid level and upper level versions if I put my mind to it. These watches just don't fit that paradigm especially for something that will be obsolete every other year.

Nah, Apple never offers discounts or free products with the purchase of another product. Not on Steve Jobs watch (/pun) !

BECAUSE THE APPLE WATCH IS A FAILURE!!!!

Apple is doing what ever it can to get rid of the surplus. No one is buying it. Terrible marketing, fake expectations. Apple was arrogant to the highest stupidity level ever, they acted if that what ever crap thei put together would be sell like rice because... "is Apple". And no! is a lame piece of crap.
Hang on while my watch tells you how wrong you are. It's a gen 1 piece of tech. The first iPhone had abysmal data speeds, no App store, and cost $600 out of the gate. And you knew it was a failure when the price dropped by $200 before it was out for a year, and then dropped another $200 when the 3G came out, even though it had better features (much faster 3G data, app store).

Interesting to see the trend in Apple's promotions. Every one of them was to bolster lagging sales in the associated devices. The iPods started tanking from the moment the iPhone was launched, and is now a lost cause ... Can't give them away. The Macs were not selling well and Apple provided an incentive to buy. iPad sales started slowing down, so another incentive. Beats not doing so well ... iPhones might well get an upgrade from someone who gets $100 back. And it's all in Apple dollars anyway, so Apple still makes money (not to mention there are exclusions on those gift cards as well).

So I'd say this underscores that the watch is struggling to make the numbers Apple wants for it, as it did for all those other products. But it also gets the watch into more hands, and expands the general understanding of its usefulness. How many posts do I read here about people on the fence waiting for gen 2 ... This promotion should go a long way toward getting them, assuming they are going to upgrade their iPhone, and frankly this may just be the tipping point to encourage that as well. However, the timing is off. They really should have offered this promotion when the 6S went on sale. So I have to wonder if they aren't getting a little worried now. Who knows we might even see a $100 discount on the watch by Black Friday, depending on how well this test promotion works for sales. The last thing Apple can afford to do is take a big PR hit lowering the price that much nationally, and not produce the results they want. Better to keep it at $50 off than look desperate and not get their expected numbers.

Although I don't think the Apple Watch has sold very well either, one reason for not seeing them is that the people who bought them aren't wearing it. Only two of my friends bought the watch and neither wear it at all now, it just sits in a drawer in their houses.

obviously still a sale for apple but what are the reasons for not using the watch anymore?

even if the watch is 100% functioning without the ipone, gets better battery and cheaper as well (unlikely all three could happen soon) im still not sure if it makes sense when most everyone has a smartphone.

That's what I find so fascinating. I'm sure you're right.

Yet where I live, I frequent four of the busiest, nearly standing room only stores in very wealthy areas of Beverly Hills CA, Studio City, in Topanga and my community of Calabasas, people spend large amounts of money in nearly every shop they step into. It's a money is no object environment.

The entire West Los Angeles area is flush with very wealthy people. Apple Watch is so far below their radar it's just inconsequential. Yet that said I'm sure in less expensive cities Apple Watch is quite attractive to some people. I bet Apple has millions upon millions of dollars earmarked for a long term promotion. If Anyone can sell these things Apple can.

Neither of them find it compelling enough to wear any more. Both have said to me, given the chance they would have returned it but they both came to this realisation soon after the return period had passed.

I purchased the Apple Watch Steel with Classic Buckle for myself and returned it a few days later. I liked the physical design but I too found the utility of it lacking. I just prefer to use my iPhone.

Funny how a lot of the people that say Samsung's whatever is flopping because they have to do paired discounts/freebies don't say the same thing when Apple does it...

Strange huh?

I wouldn't be surprised if the number of watches sold to now is far, far less than a million. I travel extensively, see hundreds of people every day, and the number of wrist apples I've seen so far is two. TWO.

Even if they sold 3 million in the US, I should see one wrist apple for every one hundred people I see. And I have been looking. They're just not out there.

$100.

That's where they'll sell as an amusement for lots of people. Right now there is just no compelling reason to have one at such a high price because it requires a phone tethered, and "why bother" is the thought that I and most people have had.

Apple already said they sold at least 4 times that. So, you're WRONG.
Even Apple's own financial report PROVES YOU:RE WRONG.
How more wrong do you want to be?
Want me to find the quote?

Strange how you misrepresent something that's totally different.
Not so strange how biased you are....

What Samsung is selling things is often unrelated.
They're also basically GIVING THEM AWAY.
YOU KNOW near $0... See the diff... Need a calculator?

Is $50 dollar off, giving the product away? I don't think so?
Also, Does that apply to sales everywhere? No.

It's basically a promotion to get the people inside the store where they can actually try the product on.
Trial of the watch has already been proven to promote sales.

*sigh*
As multiple people have pointed out: the watch charges in an hour.... sooooooooo, as long as you could do without it say, while you eat breakfast, your needs are met. You could wear it the other 23 hours per day.
Insisting that isn't good enough is silly and (dare I repeat??) simply making up issues.

Apple posted 1.7b other revenues in their latest report. thats a the sum of Apple Watch+iPod+ other revenues like legal conflicts and reconciliations for example.
iPods are declining in general but a higher revenue is expected due to new colored Nano and new Touch so its like:
250m$ from iPods (last year was like 200m)+50m other revenues thats: 300m$
1.7b-300m=1.4 billion revenues from the Apple watch.
Now if we average the price of the Apple watch for 450$ (higher edition models and other bands):
1.4b÷450=3.1 million watch in 7 months. (estimation only)
I think this is an impressive number of sales for a fashion overpriced not needed product. Apple might not be very pleased with this but at least its very far from failure.

No. Go find your own - I pointed you in the right direction.
A quick "Google" will garner you all kinds.
None came from Apple. A month after announcing the product, and 6 months before it actually launched, Apple said they would report the results within "Other." You don't report iPhone-like profits in "Other."

Funny how a lot of the people that say Samsung's whatever is flopping because they have to do paired discounts/freebies don't say the same thing when Apple does it...

Strange huh?
There's a huge difference between BOGOF offers or $220 discounts off a flagship product like the Galaxy S6 nationwide and a $50 bundle discount on a $1000 purchase being tested in 2 markets.

I use mine without fail every day. Couldn't do without mine.

Love it for walks, love the notifications and using my music in the gym

Really - I'm making up issues? Since I haven't actually told you why I need multi-day battery life - I find this somewhat arrogant of you.

I go on multi-day trips.. longer than an apple watch would last, without going near electric outlets. "Take external battery with you", you say. Err... No... space is an absolute premium.. more important items than external batteries to power a damn watch! ( Better water proofing would also help - but is adequate at the moment - something I'd think Apple still sort out in v2 ).

Keep on the "But your making up reasons" line... I don't care! My requirements do not fit the limited life of an Apple Watch... plus *personal preferences*.

Like I said, I'm glad you are enjoying your watch, but you cannot expect everyone to feel the same way... for any product, even an Apple product. Apple Watch does not suit everyone... for me, the limited battery life is an absolute issue. Don't like my view - because it seems that way.. tough - it will not change for the reasons I've given. Get on with your life - you have more important things to worry about than some random person on a forum disliking the life of a watch battery!

I cant go a day without compliments/comments about how cool it looks and is. The watch can do a good amount of things for someone like me who has a smart home and connected car. Starting, unlocking and locking my car from my watch is the coolest thing in the world.. but everyone who I talk to doesnt have just 500 laying around to spend on a watch. It's really the price that keeps people from buying the novelty.
