Naaa the external over TB will be just as fast or faster…A nice 6 or 8 Bay raid box will be just fine..

The issue is you need to buy a nice 6 or 8 bay raid box on top of your new computer..

No a new MP with an external disk array will be MUCH faster than the current MP with internal disks. The reason is the Flash will be used for the data that is accessed the most often. Apple is calling it "fusion" and the net effect is theuser thinks he was a huge and very fast disk

So for example I buy a 5 drive Thunderbolt RAID and connect it to the new Mac Pro. What I'd see is one "system drive" that is 12TB in size and very fast

I'd then need a larger NAS or two for Time Machine backups

So you agree with me..

But I don't want fusion, never have, that they can keep but I'm sure it's able to be disabled..

There was a time when Steve Jobs made fun of such computers and most people on this forum laughed their butts off:

And now, all of a sudden, it's okay when a desktop with a Mac Pro on it is going to look like this?

Now here are some pictures of a working post-production house that needs 12-core processors and terabytes of external RAID storage.

Wires? Not a problem...

I like the concept, but would have preferred a minimalist box (like everyone else...) - What I can't stop thinking is that apple are obviously such a custom board/design and production powerhouse, what on earth could have they achieved with a nice big square box...

Pro use vs the Rest of Us...

So, the New MacPro is round. Looks similar to a circular file. I can recall when the Mini was made fun of as well. People are worried about not having a traditional tower. Old school in my opinion. I use TB, Seagate drives (TB adapter). Work fine for me. I use it on a Mini. One wire. Remember, TB can be daisy-chained, as pointed out by a post-production house user. Relax, it will grow on you. Just like our President's spy program. :)
p.s. yes, proton torpedo...

They take a cut just like ANY other store does. You obviously know nothing about how retail works.

made me laugh, Retail only works like this in apple land, Sony, Phillips etc do not take a 30% cut of ad and show revenues for everything i watch on my TV, nor does my washing machine manufacturer take a cut from the fabric conditioner maker, or for that matter dictate which fabric conditioner i use,

Only APPLE (and companies wishing they had thought of the model of getting rich of other peoples hard work, Like EA) do this.

Apple is the exception to the rule, not the norm.. and god help us, we don't want it to become the norm or we will be charged for breathing iAIR

There are already TB1 cases that hold more than one card and I'm sure with the added bandwidth of TB2 they may hold more. And TB chains so that lessens the clutter. Who knows, with all this complaining maybe somebody will make the big chassis all these people seem to miss with space for hard drives and cards and connects with one TB2 cable (more if needed) - oh and is rack mountable to cover all the bases.
You don't understand that one TB cable isn't enough for even one PCIe x16 slot?
Curious, why is it not a problem that the CPU will be obsolete in two years but a problem if the GPU is obsolete in two years?
You usually can change gpu card for newer gen, but newer gen cpu's usually uses different socket and/or chipset.
You tarditionally could have bought a bit too expensive cpu and save on a cheaper gpu to get nice overall power. And then after couple of years get a monster gpu and double your overall power. Not anymore, maybe...

Last Christmas I was almost ready to build a Hackintosh. Do you know what stopped me? First of all, noise: I couldn't get a top CPU with a top of the line GPU without having a lot of fans in the box. And I need either no fan at all, or one very good designed fan, because being a Mac user for several years, there's one thing I appreciate when working with computers, and it's silence. I want absolute silence, please.

Second, I wanted a very durable system. Yes, silent and durable. But that's a problem, because lack of fans seems to suggest overheating and premature hardware failures.

Third, the Hackintosh still has compatibility problems. I said goodbye to compatibility issues many years ago, and I don't want them back.

So, I decided to wait, I halted my Hackintosh purchase in order to see the next move by Apple.

And I'm glad I waited, because this is -exactly- -I really mean exactly- the computer I wished to have: good thermal design, super silent, super CPU, super GPU, and no more HDD.

Yes, I'd love to build this myself for $1500, but please tell me how can I buy an ultra silent PC with great performance yet good thermal design. What components must I choose so that I don't end up with 5 fans or a loud liquid cooling system and at the same time I've top performance for CPU intense tasks and heavy OpenGL?

I just see no competition. Sorry but I don't see any competitor for the new Mac Pro.

I'm glad I waited :)

I own 2 Imacs a MBP and a Hackingtosh plus a Hex core windows 7 pc with a Nvidia 580GTX and I can honestly say the Hackintosh, Ivy bridge i7 3.5ghz with 16g of Ram, is the nicest out of the lot, noise its not noisey at all. there are plenty of after market solutions, I hate noise also, I went for a Triple slot cooler on my GF card and its silent, I went into the bios of my Windows Pc and set the Cpu to silent.

I dont know where this misconception about hackingtosh, that there is comatiblity issues ive never had any. Truth be told if you want apple to hold your hand and charge you 3 times the amount of money to do it go for the Mac Pro.

Particularly poignant observation from that site:

But many 3D users aren’t even going to get to the point of using the new Mac Pro. The fact that the GPU is not user-replaceable remains a huge issue for people like me, and this is going to do a lot to send potential Mac Pro 3D users to Windows PCs. If there are only good/better/best purchase options, with the GPU and the CPU speeds linked for build options on the Mac store, that would further limit our options.

Ok, I'm going to show my age here.... Ah the days of the 8" floppy

Be glad you missed you missed the tape days. Not that new-fangled magnetic stuff, but old-school punched tape. Paper for the routine i/o and mylar versions for distribution to the field. It did have one cute feature - you could actually figure out the computer code by visually identifying the patterns of punched holes.

Apple also hates optical drives.

So do I.

They're slow, loud (my fast and reliable external plextor drives are loud as hell), frequently unreliable, delicate media with limited shelf life and limited storage capacity, etc. Both my MacBooks have slot loading optical drives and both are utterly useless. My friend had the same experience with hers and you can find similar complaints about Apple's slot load drives all over the Internet. These aren't Apple-built parts. If no one manufactures a better drive, stop using them, right?

The only place I want optical discs is in my movie/tv show collection. Even there, I've returned many purchases for manufacturing defect, some DVDs don't play in some players, etc...

I think after Steve jobs left Apple has lost it self big time when it comes to desktop computers:(:(:(:( it well makes awesome tablets and laptops but have lost it with the iMac and Mac Pro.

I suggest that this is the direction Steve Jobs was likely to take with the Pro. He wasn't a guy that would rack computers and have 10TB of drives hooked up. He started this crusade to change the face of computing. So don't talk like your savior died and Apple's pro computer died with him. He was apparently your enemy.

... So with the cable it is $850, cheaper than the current PCIe solution? No, but probably cheaper than when you initially invested in Fibre Channel 3, 4, 5 years ago?

** and yes I get your frustration, your pissed because you already made the PCIe investment and now you can't simply plug it into a new machine, welcome to the world of computers and technology changing every time you fart.

You will be a lot happier when you come to the conclusion that computers are merely tools and getting too attached to them is just going to cause un-needed stress in your life. Bottom line is computers suck, are money pits, are obsolete the minute you buy them and will ruin your life. ;)

Somebody here actually GETS IT! Yes!! Computers are frustrating and there's no end to the moving of the goal posts! The only thing we CAN do is learn not to become attached to any one solution. If a person cannot tolerate or afford to keep up with the changing face of computers, computers is the wrong business for them. (It's the wrong business for me, so I don't even try to make money with it anymore)

Anyone else have issue with the power button being on the 'back'?

The I/O section would be facing back in my machine room....id have to crouch and feel around behind the unit for the switch when i turn it on every morning.

I thought we pros kept our machines on 24-hours a day?

I agree, it's in the wrong place. Maybe Apple will put it back on the keyboard where it belongs.

Nope it only had one, mine had BluRay though :D (They were IDE until 4,1)

I do to. I paid 30 euro for it a couple months back for Flashing BIOS'

Ah, IDE, completely forgot. I gave my G5 to a friend and had an extra Blu-Ray drive. Was frustrated when I realized he couldn't use it. I believe the last PowerPC chassis did have 2 ODD bays. Only differences in the released Mac Pro tower were the guts and rear ports and power supply. Could be wrong, but could swear...

PS I'm loving 10.9! Just about everything many of us in the pro market wanted has been brought in. It's quite impressive as it seems Apple engineers have really been listening to people's feedback.

"Interwebz" was a quote to the young adult who tried to make a point. The point we are making is that it is impossible to send 25-50GB's of HD work to clients when they simply request a BD. In addition to wireless media lacking support for full 1080P, 54+Mbps data, DTS, Blu-Ray media surpasses anything currently on the market. Wait until 4K comes along.

I suppose we should give our clients HDD's, as ODD media is clearly out of the question for some of you. Not for those who make a living on film/video work.

I hear ya, but look at this more as an adjunct to your current mac pro, underneath the desk. The one with the aftermarket blu-ray drive. The one that can run snow leopard, the last reliable OS for music and video editing. This new can can sit on top of the desk as a bridge to the new world, and nearly quadruple the render speed, woo-hoo. IF they get all the bugs out of the OS.

I groused for years about no blu-ray on mac and just gave up and aftermarket upgraded. Have both internal and external burners.

:apple:

I knew this Mac Pro will be expensive, but I just searched and found list price on Anadtech for the graphics card: The W9000 is an astonishing $3999

Surely that must put this new Mac Pro in the $10k+ category?
Twice what I had imagined.
I'm almost beginning to feel they're just making this in order to tell us "It wasn't selling, so we discontinued it" a couple of years from now.

Is Fusion Drive stable with an external array? Seems kinda sketchy to use it with a removable drive system. Seems like a good way of corrupting data.

awesome

I love this thing!

I don't get the complaining about external drives. I always hated having to swap the hard drives in my old Mac Pro. (I finally switched to an iMac last year after the languishing too long in the no-update-wasteland of the past three years.) So much easier with external. I'm personally grateful that Apple is pushing a modular external bus so hard.

Another big reason why I love thunderbolt is I can plug all this stuff quickly and easily into my MacBook Pro.

Something else that is exciting is that I think there's a strong possibility that Apple worked out some sort of deal with AMD to effectively give those $2K-$3K FirePro express cards to consumers for a fraction of their retail price. This box is going to be expensive, but much cheaper than building your own using FirePro Express cards off newegg and buying your own Xeon. I'm guessing it will start at $4K.

And while design isn't everything, I like that Apple put serious effort into this. I also like that, unlike the Cube, the design here actually has a functional purpose. The central heating core + single big quiet fan is great. I love it when form meets function.

My only gripe is they should have called it the Mac Power Core. Since it's just the core of your workflow and the name sounds cool (to me, anyway).

take care

It's not even supported at this point.

Yes, and you can make your investment in external storage, 4K monitors and other peripherals, and when you're ready to move on to the next model of Mac Pro (humor me here), you just swap it out for a new one (with bigger and badder processor, GPU, etc.) restore your OS from Time Machine backup and off you go.

They're in business to make money, I wouldn't believe this even for a second. ;)

...so if you are willing to re-invest to TB2 - (whatever interface) cable or solution...

Agree with a lot of what you're saying here, but TB2 will be a transitional solution. Customers with existing TB equipment will be able to work just fine on a TB2 capable machine. If / when they're ready to add TB2 devices into the mix, it's just as easy as that.
