Some people don’t seem to understand what this is and who this is for. This has nothing to do with consumers, this is something Apple is offering its employees. It would be like apple offering a flu shot on campus for free, no one is forcing you to do it but you can choose to get if you want to. Still not sure why people are freaking out.

It must be so good working for Apple.... Everything you get seems to be 'free' (..and probably required)

And some people do understand it and are still uneasy with the idea of mass collection of genetic data. Voluntary or otherwise, and in any context. You don't have to agree but it doesn't automatically mean that other people don't understand it.

I feel like if Tennessee Ernie Ford were around today he would probably sing a song about this.

No one can know that.
And nobody can know whether or not a secret cabal of people run the entire world from the shadows, as part of an ancient secret society called the Illuminati...

That’s the hallmark of any conspiracy theory- no matter how outlandish, the fallback position can always be: “yeah... but you don’t know for CERTAIN it isn’t true!”.

Are you familiar with Pharmacogenetics? To me, that is something that I think is incredible. I know a lab here in KY that was trying to get in to it

This is an amazing benefit. As someone who knows this field well, the future of treatment breakthroughs map directly to personalized medicine. An understanding of your genes is the first step.

Well done Apple.

Or screening for possible high risk employees. Hmmmmm. Does make you think.

Apple is magnificent at telling you how important privacy is yet then wants to collect and “screen“ employees dna. Talk about a huge privacy breach. Yet Apple fans happily want to allow Apple to collect this as a “perk”

I love my Apple devices but I wouldn’t take advantage of this “opportunity”
Is your name FUD and do you wear a tinfoil hat by any chance?

So just genetic data or anything? Insurance companies have petabytes of claims and other clinical data. Are you uneasy about that? What about research studies that people voluntarily participate in? Or NIH studies? Or clinical trials? Also how is voluntarily participating in anything a privacy breach?

Nope no tinfoil hat. Just want to keep my employer out of my medical history as much as possible. Do you believe everything your told?

insurance companies are going to have your medical history. They are paying for your medical expense. Do I like it. Not really but what can I do.

Clinical trials or research studies are voluntary. You don’t have to participate. Thankfully this program is voluntary. if you want to participate go ahead. I wouldn’t because I do value my privacy.

way to move the goal post though.

It's nothing at all like a flu shot.

Both are offered voluntarily, neither is forced onto anyone. Still waiting on your source for your earlier drive by accusation of Apple keeping employee messages on personal phones.
Other than being voluntary they are nothing alike.
The flu shot is a one time injection. No personal data is being used. Other than the record of receiving it
Genetic testing is nothing like getting a flu shot.

Only on MacRumors would Apple hate be such that trying to prevent illness/disease is seen as a bad thing. Yes what a terrible thing that a company would put in place programs to try and prevent employees from incurring significant health care costs in the first place.
********. Screening does nothing to prevent a disease. Armed with this knowledge of your genetic predisposition, you think the medical community knows how to avoid the potential outcome? Ask your employer if they’re more likely to insure a person armed with this insight. The only one who can avoid significant costs is an insurer.

It's a complex conversation and I'm not an authority. I just don't approve of large-scale genetic data collection. In my view there is too much potential for unforeseen consequences and mission creep.

People legitimately discussing the pros and cons of genetic testing of employees does not constitute ‘Apple hate’ the issue is far bigger than this one company.

There are issues of privacy and if the data will be released to external bodies such as crime fighting bodies or insurance companies? Also, how will the company use the information, might it block a promotion who doesn’t seem so healthy? What if a serious or potentially terminal illness is revealed - in Europe core medical treatment is free, but in the US will the employer have a duty of care to pay for it? So there’s a lot that understandably must be decided.

What is interesting to me is that this is an affluent company with good staff services and support, so this move could be indicative of what other companies will do.

Allegedly, but you already made up your mind 🤷‍♂️. Just like you’re jumping to conclusions here, and again ignoring the fact it is VOLUNTARY not mandatory.

A bad idea doesn't become a good one just because it's voluntary at the start.

And how has your privacy been breached?

Where does this article say that anyone at Apple (not AC Wellness) beside the employee who voluntarily signed up for this will know the results and at an individual employee level?
