Japanese isn’t a race.

Either way, I don’t think there’s anything wrong with asking why they didn’t offer free repairs in the Harvey floods.
I'm thinking because Americans would go to ridiculous lengths to game the system and get free repairs without being affected by the flooding. For example, people could have made a killing with Craigslist ads offering to take "ownership" of water-damaged devices from elsewhere, getting repairs, and charging a fee.

There were multiple really bad hurricanes last year in Apple's home country, one of which put a whole city under water and the other pretty much destroyed Puerto Rico.

And yet Japan gets free repairs.

I like that Apple is doing this to help ease the pain for the victims of the flooding in Japan. I am curious to see if this is something Apple does moving forward.

Less than 1 year ago, 100,000 homes were flooded in Houston by Hurricane Harvey. I am sure many Apple devices were made unusable by flood waters but were still repairable. With Apple having a large presence just a 150 miles away in Austin, it seems like that would have been a great time to roll out a program like this.

I would love to see Apple continue this trend. Time will tell.

It’s never enough, is it? The Apple-hate runs so deep and wide in the glass-completely-empty view of some, Apple can do no right.

Shameful. Sad. Pathetic. But not surprising, unfortunately. Apple could give away $100 billion dollars and the response would be, why not $150? Why not $200?

Apple is under zero obligation to help repair these products, in fact water damage is normally a condition under which they won't attempt any repair (bring your water-damaged MacBook Pro to them here in the US and they won't even attempt to fix it). They could let these people be out all that money and have no choice but to buy new products, but instead they're trying to help.

And what do you do? You complain that it's not enough. Wow.

I am totally embarrassed. I misread this subject and commented incorrectly. Please disregard my laps of understanding the English language. I apologize to everyone who read my ignorant entry.

I have already posted my apology for misunderstanding this subject and entering an ignorant comment.. I just wanted to let you know that I do not hate Apple as I have 9 of their products and love each and everyone of them.

Nice one, especially in comparison to other companies. Yet I think donations like this should rather involve countries with less prosperity first. My opinion.

Once there is a rash of damaged iMac Pros in Ethiopia I’m sure Apple will get right on that.

Imagine if they did this thing in any country other than Japan... I know I would take advantage even though I don’t need.

Seriously, this is big.
It probably applies exclusively to a specific area or areas and presumably to water damage only.

And I suspect they’d be able to tell a difference between a flood-damaged iPhone and one that took a swim in the toilet.

You don't actually want everyone to get free repair. You just don't want the Japanese to get the free repair.

so it's ok for the japanese to get their equipment repaired free of charge after it got damaged by a natural disaster, but it's not ok for the americans? where's the equality in that? this is more of that "diversity" which the tech companies are still pushing.

Perhaps this is a new initiative that they're starting this year to help give back even more than they already did? Doesn't seem fair to say "Why didn't you do even more in the past." The next time there is a major flood in the US, if Apple does not offer a repair assistance program, then that would be a much more appropriate time to ask.

Are you hurricane shaming Apple now? Calling this nature disaster discrimination, right? Misogyny!!! Prob cause Tom cook is a WHITE MALE!!!! How dare he!!!!
[doublepost=1532708318][/doublepost]I’d like to see Samsung match up free repair program or make a mockery commercial about this.

Some insurance policies don’t cover acts of God. So the fact that Apple are doing this for free is very gracious.

Dunno if this is common, but super cool regardless.

Definitely a HUGE win for customer assurance for Apple!

Yeah THIS! This will rub a few USA citizens the wrong way. Then again to be fair not ALL USA citizens understand nor believe that Puerto Rico natives ARE US Citizens - far too many need that education. That’s another topic. But on the real ...

A very smart gesture to bring a bit of relieve to the Japanese people, and probably won't cost them a lot.

@robbietop,

This is the reason why Apple didn’t do this in their founding and HQ country.

Must be a huge relief for those people to see this. Way to go Apple

Definitely.

Good Apple:)

So what advantages would you take...? Curious

Take advantage means “subvert the intention of the program for personal gain”.

E.g. use it to get a fix on your broken screen while you were not affected.

Not the first time they did this.

My wife's iPad 2 was damaged after falling off the table during the big earthquake they had there in 2011 and I called them about a screen replacement repair cost. Apple told me they were offering free repairs (in this case replacement) of devices damaged during that earthquake. They offered to ship a replacement to her to pick up at a local Apple Store, but I pointed out to them the iPad 2 release was delayed there due to the quake/tsunami so they offered to replace it when she got back to the states (and they did).

I got flamed here when I posted about this act of generosity on Apple's part.

To Me, this is what separates companies from each other where you have Apple who is recognizing something as a concern and they are reaching out for those who are affected in areas where they don’t necessarily have to offer their services such as this example in this article. This is a commendable effort by Apple.

Apple collectively raised $13,000,000 to aid the relief efforts in Puerto Rico last year.
nope, that article says over $1 million for PR not $13 million for PR. Big difference... the most affected place and just $1.xx out of the $13 million. Don't forget that is not apple but the apple community, so only a part of a part was given by apple.

So Apple isn’t doing enough? Should Apple give nothing, unless it meets your definition of enough? Look in the mirror and ask who is doing enough.

Your cynicism is disheartening.

Spite is my favourite emotion, too! Let it go...

Why people in less rich places can't buy a bunch of new Apple products when they are released if they don't have money. Apple is a business not a charity. There is a business reason for this. Loyalty from a rich consumer base.

Its not cynicism, its numbers talk. There is a big difference between $1 vs $13 million. Which is the big error on the other poster comment and the reason for my reply. If you felt that it was a jab at apple then its your own way of reading into the comment. BTW, I live in PR and passed the hurricanes and helped a lot here and the people of the other islands that were affected from the hurricanes before the ones in PR. IMHO you should look in the mirror and ask yourself 'do I do enough" because it seems you are projecting your way of looking at life.
