Definitely a HUGE win for customer assurance for Apple!

Yeah THIS! This will rub a few USA citizens the wrong way. Then again to be fair not ALL USA citizens understand nor believe that Puerto Rico natives ARE US Citizens - far too many need that education. That’s another topic. But on the real ...

@robbietop,

This is the reason why Apple didn’t do this in their founding and HQ country.

Definitely.
Anyway Apple's home turf has already got quite a lot of good stuff like occasional iTunes gift card discount.. also Apple Store's service is better too. Here in Hong Kong, our Apple Stores don't accept return whatsoever unless the product is DOA...

Its not cynicism, its numbers talk. There is a big difference between $1 vs $13 million. Which is the big error on the other poster comment and the reason for my reply. If you felt that it was a jab at apple then its your own way of reading into the comment. BTW, I live in PR and passed the hurricanes and helped a lot here and the people of the other islands that were affected from the hurricanes before the ones in PR. IMHO you should look in the mirror and ask yourself 'do I do enough" because it seems you are projecting your way of looking at life.
Fine, you wanted to correct the poster. Let’s make sure the $13 million Apple helped raise for hurricane relief isn’t incorrectly credited to Puerto Rico-specific aid.

I apologize for bringing your own contributions into the equation, that was not necessary.

I can understand you feel PR was shortchanged, but the timing was such that many had given earlier with Harvey and Irma. At the risk of incurring the moderator’s wrath, I think the US government has treated PR shamefully.

Oh my god! You are not entitled to a charity just because it happened somewhere else. Japnanese people are less wealthy in general than Americans yet pay the same money or more to apple than you, why the hell do you deserve free repairs more?
Eeh no they are not?
It’s a smart marketing move. Japan is a tough market as there will be strong loyalty with local jspanese brands ie Sony

Please disregard the following paragraph which was written with ignorance. I have since been enlightened and, hopefully, will not write any more idiotic comments.

My TCW of comment is that I certainly would not want a product, that is not inexpensive, that has been through a flood no matter what repairs they do. Apple should replace, not just look at and fix, the damaged products. Would you want a 40k car after it has been through a flood? After purchase, wait for delivery, ship for fix, wait for fix and return - no thanks.
What?! Which company is even offering to repair the devices? If BMW offered to repair your car for free after it flooded, you are saying you would demand a new one instead? If you don’t have flood insurance coverage on your house if it was at home or coverage on your car you are toast.

Perhaps this is a new initiative that they're starting this year to help give back even more than they already did? Doesn't seem fair to say "Why didn't you do even more in the past." The next time there is a major flood in the US, if Apple does not offer a repair assistance program, then that would be a much more appropriate time to ask.
I’m sure the number of devices they sell in Japan is less than even Houston so their program to raise and match donations is likely more realistic to stay within their guidelines for donations as a percentage of revenue

The OP mis-read the article and retracted his comment a few minutes after he made it... not to worry!

It seems like a great way to clear inventory of older parts that are likely to be written off anyways, while helping people who may not be able to afford repairs or new devices. Good plan.

Is this sort of flooding damage covered?

Well I am just asking this as a honest question so don’t beat me up to bad. As another poster said if it is water damaged who would want that to be repaired leading to my question.
Never have been to Japan but do they have flood/homeowners insurance that wouldn’t either replace or compensate for their loss?

No they don’t and if I remember correctly, it is not offered. Insurance companies would not make any money insuring people like they do in America. Things happen all the time in Japan as far as weather etc. and if there were any insurance for weather conditions, it is way to expensive to be affordable.

Prices in Japan are crazy for Apple stuff as compared to the U.S. I had to buy a Mac Pro 2013 while working in Japan a few years ago and had to pay $500+ more dollars due to the Yen. Apple does not adjust their pricing that’s often due to currency $ value, so once they set the price, it is it...unless the difference gets way out of hand and laughable, just like in Europe.

I was resently in the area when it was hit hard. Pretty sur-real at the time looking at neighborhoods and houses. It looked like the houses were in an ocean all around. Had to drive a friend home during the storms and I could not tell what was the street from the river next to it. My car could have floated away (water was up close to the handle and could have flooded my engine). Had no choice but to drive through it.

Anyway, good jester from Apple to assist. It is a shame about all of the negative comments about it. Any good deed (though it cannot be everywhere and to everyone) is a good thing, regardless. They did not have too offer, but they did.

Yes, Apple might be doing it because they are trying to break into the market with streaming video (Apple TV) and their music service...

Japan is totally “Sony” blu-ray, DVD and basically no interest in streaming anything, including paying subscription fees or anything like it. They are basically a cash society (a good thing in my opinion). They still love paper books etc...and still like the physical media...a culture thing... so “if” you want to be senister, that would be a good reason for why they did it. Japan still has “tower records” shops and big DVD-blu ray and book stores everywhere....flash back to the 1990’s. Pretty wild!

There were multiple really bad hurricanes last year in Apple's home country, one of which put a whole city under water and the other pretty much destroyed Puerto Rico.

And yet Japan gets free repairs.

How small minded can you be?

It’s never enough, is it? The Apple-hate runs so deep and wide in the glass-completely-empty view of some, Apple can do no right.

Shameful. Sad. Pathetic. But not surprising, unfortunately. Apple could give away $100 billion dollars and the response would be, why not $150? Why not $200?

Or people would say that they did it because they would mKe it up in a tax break...always negative.

It probably applies exclusively to a specific area or areas and presumably to water damage only.

And I suspect they’d be able to tell a difference between a flood-damaged iPhone and one that took a swim in the toilet.

But amazingly enough, the majority of the Japanese people would not take advantage of the offer and purposely damage their product to get a new one.

It is not in their thinking system generally. Every country has it good points, and Japan in this regard has this.

That's a weird thing to be sure of. Apple has a 30%+ share of the smartphone market in a 100M+ population country. Greater Houston has 6-7M people. There must be at least 10x Apple devices in Japan as in greater Houston.

Oh yes, absolutely. Certainly didn’t intend to comment that way about the Japanese people.
