To the people who have one: does the design of the flap compensate for the added thickness of the rear? *ie does the iPad still sit up at an angle when using this case in the viewer position?*

I have a regular smart cover combined with a snap on rear case. It works, but the nice little angle that the naked iPad with smart cover provided was eliminated and it now sits up at a 90 degree angle. Bit annoying. Will be picking up one of these if that issue is not there though.

I seriously think Apple did this so that people wouldn't notice/complain about the back heating up on the new iPad.

Hmmm... the back of the iPad is a heat sink. Putting an insulating layer on it is a bad idea. Let's hold that heat in and raise the internal temps even more.

It also looks like a cheap plastic cover without the aluminum hinge components IMO.

I can't help but thinking that this is Apple's response to the complaints about the iPad 3 getting uncomfortably warm to hold on the back...

Ordered the dark grey one yesterday as soon as I saw it was available. Should be delivered today or tomorrow. Hmmmm now what to do with my Otterbox Defender?

I was looking for something like this in the UK, then in airports, then in the US. Couldn't find a case that looked good enough. I'll probably pick one of these up soon.

Never got on with the red leather smart cover I bought with my iPad 2 so sold it on ebay some time ago.

Ordered a Product Red version of the new smart case yesterday online and it is due to arrive tomorrow.

Numerous similar designs on the market but I will give this Apple effort a try in place of the very good Targus TPU back cover I've been using for a year or so now.

You're better off buying the Marware Microshell Folio.
They were making this before Yoobao or any of the others jumped on the bandwagon.
The Marware costs more on their website but at Amazon and other retailers it's half the price of the Apple version.
Nice thing about the Marware is that the inside of the cover is NOT microfiber and it's easier to clean.
My problem with all of these smart cover type cases is that the microfiber ends up on the outside when the case is opened and picks up all of the dirt and oils from every surface it touches.
Then it gets rubbed against the glass iPad screen when you close it.
The Marware uses a vinyl cover that won't scratch the glass and won't pick up dirt nor oils.

The only thing I like about this case is the Apple logo on the back. There are much better designs out there, like this Maikai case at half the price - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Maikai-Ultra-Leather-Smart-Cover/dp/B006JZR92C/ref=pd_cp_ce_0
Notice how it just clips over the corners, instead of folding over the 4 sides like the Apple case. This is much better as you don't keep touching the sides of the case every time you swipe near the edge of the screen. If you play games, this is really annoying.
Again, this Invision case is designed well and also at half the price - http://www.amazon.co.uk/Invision®-N...UTF8&coliid=IUZA6DUPCPO6U&colid=2AKLWXZ9U7WTY

Probably Apple's response to demand from iPad use in education. A Smart Cover would not suffice in learning environment.

Heck, I have had a hard time finding the perfect case, and many were badly designed or bulky. I will probably get the Apple one.

I got the Incipio Smart Feather and the Black leather Smart Cover for my white 32GB VeriPad. I don't regret getting that at all. These things are just poly, the Smart Cover is real leather.

I submitted the story and don't get credit?

I submitted Steve Job's death before MR had the story up and I never got credit. (At least not specifically me. I think they mentioned having an avalanche of people submitting it.)

Did I whine? No. Now be satisfied with knowing you sent the tip in even if no one else knows / believes / cares.

I bought the previous model for my iPad2, the pad slipped out of the case when I picked it up, shattered and got glass in my daughters hand. The response from the Apple Store rep was "yeah, it happens." - Warranty and AppleCare do not cover that btw. IMHO avoid this very $%!+ made product at all cost and get a otterbox or something else.

HUH? How could it slip out of a cover?

Very sorry to hear that, hope your daughter recovered okay, but which case are you talking about? The Smart Case we are discussing here was just released yesterday, Apple has never made another case quite like it.

This doesn't make sense as the iPad has a huuuuuuuuge bezel. The very slight bit of the case overlapping the glass surface comes nowhere near the touch sensitive part of the display and will have ZERO effect on games.

It's not like the iPhone where this is an issue.

I just stopped by the Apple store to pickup one of these, I returned home without it. I thought for sure this would be a great case, but I was not impressed. My biggest complaint was the loose fit. It would obviously stay on, but the long edge away from the hinge would easily pull away from the iPad just trying to hold onto it and I know that would drive me nuts. Also, while it wasn't real weak, the magnet was not strong enough to reliably hold the cover closed. The quality just didn't seem to be on par with my leather smart cover, so I guess I'm passing on this one.

Thanks, I haven't had a chance to check them out in person but from the photos my suspicions were correct. Ill be sticking with my iblason + leather smart cover

Bought mine yesterday.. comes in the mail tomorrow! Finally something that has full protection. I love the smart cover.. but I can't wait for the smart case!
