I seriously think Apple did this so that people wouldn't notice/complain about the back heating up on the new iPad.

Hmmm... the back of the iPad is a heat sink. Putting an insulating layer on it is a bad idea. Let's hold that heat in and raise the internal temps even more.

It also looks like a cheap plastic cover without the aluminum hinge components IMO.

I can't help but thinking that this is Apple's response to the complaints about the iPad 3 getting uncomfortably warm to hold on the back...

iPad 3 is uncomfortably hot - Consumer Reports debunked its own story:

My iPad3 never feels hot compared to the previous models, just a bit warmer certainly no big deal and a case will do nothing. Most of the heat is on the front side from my experience anyway.

I received my Dark Grey Case today. The inside microfiber will really keep the whole iPad body pristine. It fits the iPad3 perfectly, the top cover is just short of the edges so I find the magnet holds it closed just fine and it doesn't tend to catch things that might open it when slipping it into a briefcase.

With the top rolled up and sitting vertically, the display can be tilted back to about 75 degrees, nice.

I really wish they had BLACK, this Dark Grey is medium at best, way too light for my taste, but that's my only complaint. It is a high quality case, the controls and cutouts are perfect, and it's still a pretty thin fully encased iPad compared to some of the HUGE ones I've seen in the field on other folk's units.

I received my dark grey one. I really like it.

You can take it in and out, it's not going to damage it. Nothing is hard plastic. Everything is covered.

It does stand it up in both directions. Nice.

$49. Very expensive for it. I suspected I'd likely return it, but I'm going to keep it.

I was still using a first generation case on new iPad when I needed it away from my desk because I prefer it to all be covered and yet stand it up. This answered all that. Thanks Apple you got me to spend $49 on a $5 item, but it is well made for what it is.

This is an awful case! It's really loose and floppy, difficult to open. Really not happy with it.

I'll look at one, but I think I like my current light-grey smart cover combined with the belkin semi-transparent matt snap cover on the back. I like being able to take the smart cover off.

Yes, its a super protection for back and front side of ipads. The price is also very reasonable. I want to get a case with the color Red.

Called to return mine today. CS rep said he'd refund me and I could keep the case. Sadly, even a free smart case isn't very tempting to keep on my iPad. He sounded like he'd been hearing complaints about it all day. I had high hopes but it's really just a very floppy strange case.

This is a joke. Dont think SJ would ever have approved.

The smart cover is the way to go.

Just received mine in the mail and I must say, I agree with the both of you. I just do not like the quality of the case. It's loose like mentioned, and doesn't feel very minimal to me at all. It definitely adds noticeable bulk, unlike one of those millimeter thin, snap on plastic cases. I'm also not liking the grippy feel of it. The texture is actually reminscent of the Apple case for the first generation iPad, but I somehow liked that one more than this version.

So this is going right back to Apple unfortunately. Definitely prefer the minimalism of just the smart cover only and looks like I'll be keeping that.

iPad Smart case not fitting

Just received my iPad Smart Case for my new iPad, and like a few comments here, its not a great product.

All the access holes dont line up properly even though the ipad is seated correctly, there also seems to be a lot of space around the ipad given the case a loose feeling. Also doesnt work well in stand mode, almost on the brink of falling over.

Thinking of sending it back and keeping to my smart cover and cheap £6 rear cover.

I bought one from Apple Meadowhall last week. Took it back yesterday.

Just to repeat the above... doesn't feel great, doesn't fit well either at the back, or around the edges. The magnet seems weaker than the smart cover. The camera hole doesn't even get close to lining up.

All a bit rubbish really - especially for the price which even by apple's standards is bonkers.

To be fair though, as usual, I was in Apple for about 2 mins max - refund given without question, and no problems.

Finally

I've always liked my black Smart Cover & used it with my iPad2 & 3rd gen. But always wanted a thin skin type cover for the back, I in general would prefer not to use a case at all on either my iPad & iPhone but it's just not a good idea. So I'm always looking and trying to find the perfect case for all my Apple devices. I've tried many, wasted quite a bit of money looking to find the case that just makes me say "this is it".
Well I really like my new Apple Smart Case, it's what I've wanted for a long time, however I don't know if I can say "this is it" yet but it's close!
What I would like better is if you could still take the cover off leaving the back skin on only, if they update the design to do so that would be the ultimate case for me. But I like it and will continue to use it and is the best case I've tried to date! As for price, I paid $69 for my leather Smart Cover with half the coverage, I'm really ok with the Price for the Smart Case and I know it's not leather but I actually like the Polyurethane better!
This is the best case for iPads if you don't like bulk and you're into quality like me, this is it and typical Apple quality worth the money!:apple::apple::apple:

Really surprised that this has come to market from Apple. Very much not surprised that you didn't see this thing up on stage. It is not visually appealing. I will stay Smart Cover + Waterfield slip case.

I ended up with a £50 Switcheasy Canvas in red from Comet. I paid £40 with various discounts, and you get a screen protector, and a selection of port-covers.

Clearly not gonna be for the majority of people into smaller cases, and I'm not 100% sure its for me yet, but it does feel like quality.

Personally, I prefer the combination of the Smart Cover and a skin such as what Bodygardz or Gelaskins offer.

This way, the iPad can be docked on any dock without having to take anything off, and is much, much lighter than a case. Cheaper too, in some cases (no pun intended). :D

I have my iPad 1 covered with a Bodygardz Carbon Fiber skin, and my wife's iPad 2 has a Gelaskin that looks like an 80's boombox. I liked the (black) carbon fiber skin so much that I covered my 17" as well, and now have my own "Blackbook"!

Both are easy to remove and replacements are cheap, although after 1 year of child abuse (I have 4) they still look great.
