Yay I can actually use the harddrive on mine now instead of just using it as a very expensive router.

How did you not use the harddrive before? You can't exactly turn it off.

And you're still running the same risk it may die--it's just that you'll get a replacement. It seems like you already put yourself in that position.

Is there any chance that this problem will show up on the Airport Extreme?

Highly unlikely--it appears to be related to cramming a hard drive into a router, along with an internal power supply, and inadequate cooling. The AEBS has no hard drive of course, which is what creates most of the heat.

Question for anyone with a law background:

When Apple or any company does something like this, aren't they inviting a lawsuit because they are admitting their product is defective?

No--they're acknowledging a higher-than-average failure rate. Doesn't mean the product is defective. They are offering this as a make-good to people who expected better reliability.

This has been unwritten policy for awhile. Apple Store Genius replaced mine about 6 months ago without even questioning the warranty status. Said it was a "known issue."

Same here. It took a couple of trigger words and, frankly, it's not entirely fair to folks who didn't think to call and complain, or even ask. That said, why someone who buys a $250+ piece of equipment that breaks after 18 months doesn't at least put in one call to see if they can get some recompense is beyond me.

I'd say the bigger part of the problem was making the power brick internal. The AEBS has an external brick, so it should never have these problems.

we'll see what happens in a few years with the new mini moving the brick inside...theres a heck of a lot more than just a hard drive in there to heat things up...

Exactly, and replacing a device that had an 18-24 month lifetime with a fresh one means you satisfy most everyone who expected to get 3-4 years out of the device. They also may have used "beefier" capacitors in the later builds that may last just a bit longer.

My 500GB unit just failed about 2 weeks ago. It was fine, then nothing. I took it to the Apple Store in Boston where it was replaced... with a unit which has a serial number right in this known defective range.

go get it swapped then. i cant believe they are replacing the old models with exactly the same old ****** models! they should be new 2010 models.

Crud...my TC died a few months back and I took out the hard drive inside to use as a backup for my MP. IF I put it back into the TC, would I still be eligible for this?

What about a Receipt?

Anyone tried to return theirs without a receipt?
Impeccable timing - ours died today!

Mine died and was swapped out a couple of months ago. I had to show the Geniuses proof that I had Apple Care, and once they saw that, they backed up my info and handed me a new Time Capsule. It took a few trips to the Apple Store, but I was happy that they could save my files.

If yours was dead, I'm curious to know how they were able to access the data to back it up? If I could power up mine, I'd back it up myself before asking for a replacement.

Yep, this happened to me. This program has apparently been going on unofficially for a while, actually, because I had mine replaced a couple months ago and the Genius guy said then that it was official policy due to a recognized problem with the batch that included mine.

You should not need one. They will ask if you have a Mac under Applecare, but it should not matter.

This program covers affected Time Capsule models for 3 years from their original date of purchase. Apple will continue to evaluate the service data and will provide further updates to the program if needed.

If the serial number falls within the range, and was (obviously) bought later than July 2007 it is covered.

See my earlier posts in the thread. The Apple store was going to charge me $99 to transfer the data to a drive I would provide, first by removing the drive then copying the info over. They officially won't replace it if you open yours, but YMMV, call them and see.

Did the dropouts only recently start? I noticed dropouts and significantly slowed connections for a couple of weeks before it finally died for good.

Thanks for the reply B.

I would say recently it started slowing down and dropping out signal. I checked the Serial# and it does not line up to the "recall". I guess I will call and make my case anyway and see what happens. Has anyone had issues outside of this make of the TC?

So this leads to the question . . . are they just replacing one time bomb with another to get you past the 3-year mark? 18 mos+18 mos=3 years, so unless you get a really substandard one, you probably go past three years on your replacement model.

Yup.

I received my replacement today. Same exact model, build 931 though, so outside the range.
