I am off work this week and could have easily gone to our local Target or Walmart on Friday to purchase the new iPad but decided to preorder as there is no guarantee on which style, capacity or type of iPads they will have for sale.

I wanted a 64 GB Black Verizon--there is likely no way of knowing if Walmart and Target will have all models/colors for sale. They didn't last year. I was only able to get a 64 GB black wifi model at the local Walmart on release day last March.

Like others here, it's going to be a long wait on Friday for delivery and yes, I too will be thinking of others going to Walmart/Target and walking out with their iPads before 8:30 am that day. But I know at least I will have the model/color I want....

I'd rather the Fed Ex guy showed up at 5pm or even on Saturday than waste my time in line. I really hope Dionte's Fed Ex driver is reading this thread and loses his iPad.

This is why I think people that pre-order should have got theirs a day early. We ordered first but we'll get ours last on launch day. :(

Yeah, sucks to be you. Let's see, you don't have to get up early, stand in line at some Best Buy in the cold and hope that you are lucky enough to be in a good place in line to get the exact color and model you desire. Instead you go about your day and some nice person from FedEX rings your doorbell and hand you your shinny new iPad. You are not entiltled. You pre-ordered only because you want to ensure that you get you hands on one on lauch day. boo-hoo.

It's cold in your part of the world? It's almost record hot where I am! But you make good points, not to mention the fact that waiting in line you might not get it any sooner than with FedEx or Ups, plus with going to the store you still have to make the way back home and pay for the gas along the way... Pre-orders seems like a no-brainer.

I'm not sure how I feel about the 8am vs. the 5pm launch time... I HAD been planning on doing what I did last year- leave around noon and take a half-day from work to wait in line at the local BestBuy. I was 2nd or 3rd in line, which was good since they sold out of the WiFi model I wanted pretty fast.

This year though with it launching at 8am- and BB not opening until 10 most likely (I have a lot of gift cards to use...)- I'll probably have to get up a bit earlier than usual and get in line first thing in the morning and just get to work a few hours late.

Of course, I need to go and check up on whether the BestBuy where I am will even be getting any on launch day. I know my one at home will, but the one where I am is a bit smaller. To my advantage, this time around I want an AT&T one, so hopefully they'll be in less demand (but also may be less in supply too...).

Mine's been sitting at a FedEx facility in TN since Sunday with overnight delivery, but with a delayed delivery date requested.

Why waste money on overnight shipping? Did you honestly thInk you'd get it before Friday?

I just sold my white iPad 2 16gb Wi_Fi only with Smart Cover for $325. I will be standing in line at 8am to replace it with a black one for $499.

Oh I see Apple,,,, I pre-order and pay almost $900 for an iPad only to have someone walk into an Apple store, Bestbuy, Wal-mart, At&t or Verizon store and have their iPad before mine is even out for delivery. I say Apple should deliver all Pre-orders on Thursday!

You mean: anyone can wake up before dawn, sit outside in a lawn chair, be miserable, miss work, and keep their fingers crossed that the store they're at will have the model they want, while all you have to do is wait for a knock on your door. Yeah, Apple's really screwing you over.

Walmart it is!

If this news is saying that Walmart is expected to have it on launch day, I'll be there.. Its literally 2 minutes from my house and the best part is that its 24 hours, no waiting outside!!

FedEx's hub is Memphis, TN.

All Apple products are shipped to Memphis well before the ship date, and FedEx has a contract with Apple to only deliver these Apple products on the requested date (March 16). If FedEx delivers these early, there is a penalty in the contract and FedEx loses money. It's in FedEx's best interest to abide by the Apple contract. Apple is one of FedEx's biggest clients and doesn't want to lose them to UPS.

What does the FedEx hub in Memphis have to do with this? From what I've seen most of the iPads for the southern part of the country are sitting in Nashville, TN.

All the FedEx ones coming from within the states are shipping Standard Overnight even if you selected free shipping.

Exactly. Best Buy probably won't open till 10 but Walmart should already be open at 8 when the iPads go on sale. Maybe the staff at either store could tell you from past experience if they expect a line-up. I've read on other threads that people walked into these stores and did not find a line. Good luck... I hope you get yours.

I'm not that worried about it, I'll get it at some point. :) I would really rather buy it at the Apple store and I'm sure that will be the busiest of all the places to go locally.

Plus my bf wants to kick in (my bday is this weekend) and I'm not sure if he's using card or cash and I doubt I'll be able to show up with his cc!

Maybe I'll call them after work Friday and see if they have any 64gb 4g's left and go from there. I've waited 2 years for one, another few days or even weeks won't kill me (though I am SO excited for it!)

I wasn't able to order mine until the tenth and was told it would ship on the 19th for a 23rd delivery, but today they now say a 21st delivery, so I am a little happier. Mean while I am collecting my accessories. Have the leather smart cover and the camera kit sitting on my desk and the dock I am getting today.

The overnight shipping for these new iPad's was free.

Oh I see Apple,,,, I pre-order and pay almost $900

You preordered and paid the same money as everyone one else for the privilege of having yours guaranteed.

Setting aside the folks that ordered and asked for in store pickup, everyone else in the line is gambling. They could stand in line all day and in the end find out that all the preorder folks had grabbed the model they want before the stock even shipped to the store.

Or you could be like in Hong Kong where Apple is tired of the scalpers and their ***** and isn't doing anything but preorders. THey are sending no extra stock at all. And the police are coming around several times a day to tell folks to go home because they are loitering. There are even signs up telling them there there will be no walk ins for the iPad. Apparently some folks think it is a just a bluff but I'll put down money that it isn't. What happened over the iPhone 4s was rank and ridiculous and Apple isn't going to risk that and their staff. If it means online orders only so be it. I'm actually surprised they didn't do that in NYC and here in LA where we also get a lot of scalper/reseller action

If getting one early meant that much to you, you should have done what I did - preorder for in store pickup. Of course at that point it was a gamble since the iPad 2 didn't go on sale until 5pm...

I hope mine shows up at 3:00; I'm at work till 1 and won't be home until 1:30-2:00 so I'm hopping the UPS guy/girl doesn't show up too early otherwise I gotta wait till Monday.

If you go into your tracking info on fedex.com, you can get them to hold your package at a nearby FedEx/Kinko's location for free. They will hold it at a sorting facility too if you wish, but I bet those FedEx/Kinko's retail stores are much more convenient for everyone.

This is what I'm doing. There is one literally across the street from my apartment (their store is actually my ugly view from my apartment balcony, but it makes receiving packages oh so easy). Surely there is one around your work or home.
They *normally* drop off shipments to these stores before even going to residential drop offs. You'll be able to get off work and go right in and pick up your package. Stress free, no need to refresh the tracking info that entire day. Just don't forget your photo ID.

For those with UPS, you can get them to hold at a sorting facility, but these aren't as plentiful as the UPS stores. Unfortunately, you can't get them to hold at a UPS Store for free - only the sorting facility.

EDIT: Someone has pointed out that the FedEx website says "by the next business day". In my personal experience, I've had FedEx hold packages and they've been ready for pickup on the delivery date by 10am. Not once have they pushed it to the next business day. However, this is something to consider before requesting a hold.

I waited in line last year for the iPad 2, it was fun but this year I'll be at home waiting on the couch. Maybe next year I'll wait in line again. Sucks not being entitled.

Wow! I really don't understand the need to have to have your iPad first, before anyone else. Pre ordering in most cases guarantees you'll have what you want in your hands on launch day. Without standing in line. Jesus, what is everyone, 12 years old?

Mine are coming via UPS.
