I will be canceling my AirPods 2! What a joke! To think Tim Cook fires Scott Forestall for his failures when Scott was the future of Apple and innovation and then Cook sells products with promise of AirPad. I would fire Cook, hire Forestall, and get AAPL back on track.
Totally agree with you on this one. At what point will those on the board say hey it might be time for a change of pace.

LOL, what? Undoubtedly, the product requirements are well within the laws of physics! Don't you think they did that analysis before this project got approved? Do you think the engineers working on an electromagnetic product just skipped that part of Physics 101? Lame armchair comment.

And yet a company with tens of billions in the bank, with essentially infinite resources and some of the best engineers in the world couldn’t figure it out.

Does nobody see whats really going on? The only reason Apple presented AirPower at the 2017 September event was so they could secure the rights to it. It's all in the name guys 'Air Power'. I am confident that one day Apple will release a true wireless charging experience, but it will take time. Apple is a lot more powerful than we think. They know what they're doing.

Also addressing the guy who said: ''What a public failure for apple'' No, its not because the general public doesn't know about it, nor do they care. It's just use tech geeks who do, and who also have the most to say. Geez.
Wow what a lame excuse. TheyThey annou it so they could secure the rights to "AirPower"? You know, there are things called trademarks and patents right?

It wasn't a mess at all- complicated engineering projects like this start and fail all the time, inside every company. The ONE single Mistake AAPL made was announcing it prematurely. After that, it was all the press and consumers and blogs running rampant. And now we see why Apple does NOT normally announce projects before they're ready.

The excuses... Wireless charging is not some advanced tech no one is able to develop yet. Apple has billions in cash. They should be able to develop something as simple as a wireless charging mat. We can conclude this episode is a mess indeed. :D

Apple today canceled AirPower, the charging mat that it first announced in 2017, because of an inability to meet its high standards for hardware, reports TechCrunch.

AirPower was designed to charge the Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods all at once, but after Apple announced the device in 2017, there were persistent rumors of difficulties and no product ever launched. Apple says work on the product has been canceled entirely because the company has been unable to achieve what it was aiming for with the AirPower.

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward," said Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in a statement provided to TechCrunch.

AirPower was introduced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone X, and at the time, Apple said it would launch in 2018. 2018 came and went with no sign of AirPower and no word from Apple on when it would materialize.

There were, however, continual rumors of production, engineering, and manufacturing difficulties. Rumors suggested that there were problems with heat management, inter-device communication, and interference because Apple wanted to design a charging device where you could put an iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods anywhere on the mat to charge.

This required layering multiple charging coils, resulting in a device that ran too hot, which turned out to be an engineering issue Apple couldn't solve.

AirPower was supposed to work with the Wireless Charging Case for the AirPods that was released last week, and it was also meant to charge Apple Watch Series 3 and 4 models and all iPhones that support Qi-based wireless charging. With Apple having released the AirPods Charging Case just recently, there was speculation that an AirPower launch was imminent.

The cancelation of AirPower comes as a shock as there have been continual signs that the product was still in the works. AirPower mentions were still included on the newly launched AirPods Charging Case, and Apple recently secured a trademark for the AirPower name. There have also been ongoing rumors of a spring launch, so it appears that Apple worked for months on AirPower solutions before ultimately deciding to nix the project.

Ending work on a project that was already announced and shown off is unprecedented in Apple's recent history.

Apple maps fantastic? Do you even leave your cave?
It is. Do you use it? I just went on a roadtrip and used apple maps. For comparison we also used waze which wanted to steer us on some funky bizarre route. Meanwhile apple maps was flawless.

I routinely compare apple maps to google maps around town and find them to be pretty much the same.

And we also go on a lot of road trips, I pull a travel trailer, and we travel long distances. Apple maps has been great. And I also love the alerts it gives me on my apple watch.

That is pretty terrible.

After 2+ years of vaporware, after just recently securing the name, they cancel it? What a joke. And now...what? They won't even attempt to make a respectable entry into this space? The market is flooded with absolute junk. Nothing that even approaches Apple's standard of quality.
Wireless charging, while sounds and looks cool, is very difficult to expand its usage across the board like Bluetooth headphones do. Plus, as of now, if a user completely abandons wires to charge their device, how could he charges a phone while on the go? No way. There gotta be something far more fundamental to be implemented properly before we think about expanding wireless charging to the general public.

Probably because constructing such thing is impossible in nearest future. It's not universe of Harry Potter when you can have devices powered by magical energy

You can’t even correctly punctuate and you expect us to think you’re smarter than Tim Cook?
Ok Mr. Captain Obvious, where did I mention I was smarter. Keyboard hero over here maybe needs to reread what I said but I don’t expect things to be that easy for you.

I really wonder what the difficulty was. Knowing Apple this likely would've retailed for near $100 and they still couldn't get it to meet their standards? My no name $18 Qi charger worked flawlessly for nearly 2yrs and has great build quality.

$100 ? They charge $79 for the AirPods case and it’s 100x less advanced..

That's really incredible. Small companies succeed and the $1 trillion company doesn't?! Worrying!
Not as easy as you think though. Pad-based wireless charging is not a great solution. Ability to charge your phone anywhere anytime (within a range) without using wire is what a true wireless charging should be, just like wireless headphone.

That's embarrassing. Apple still needs to release some wireless charger for multiple devices (phone/watch/airpods) even if it will require fixed device positioning (nothing wrong with it).

That stinks. Fortunately, there are alternatives, some of which I held out buying to wait for the AirPower, but now I can spend away.

In other news, I remember when Apple was skeptical about wireless charging and criticized the Palm Pre's wireless charging at just being an "extra step" in the process. Good to know they stopped with all of that nonsense.

Why don’t they announce products when they are ready to ship? HomePod, AirPods, Mac Pro, etc all delayed beyond their initial ship date. Why are they announcing and touting products still in the prototyping phase? I’d only announce it once hardware was finalized and it is ready to enter production.
