There are the laws of physics that cannot be broken.
No matter how hard you try the concept of placing a device anywhere on the pad and have it optimally charge just doesn't work. if you understand electric and magnetic field theory, you know that.

LOL, what? Undoubtedly, the product requirements are well within the laws of physics! Don't you think they did that analysis before this project got approved? Do you think the engineers working on an electromagnetic product just skipped that part of Physics 101? Lame armchair comment.

Does nobody see whats really going on? The only reason Apple presented AirPower at the 2017 September event was so they could secure the rights to it. It's all in the name guys 'Air Power'. I am confident that one day Apple will release a true wireless charging experience, but it will take time. Apple is a lot more powerful than we think. They know what they're doing.

Also addressing the guy who said: ''What a public failure for apple'' No, its not because the general public doesn't know about it, nor do they care. It's just use tech geeks who do, and who also have the most to say. Geez.

LOL... what the hell is going on over there? Let's make a bunch of wireless products and leave it up to third parties to figure out how to charge them.
Well the wireless charging iPhones are all Qi compatible so no need to figure anything about those. The watch is wireless charging and why would you want a working Qi charger for it when its own charger is perfect for it? My watch 4 charges to full from 10% in 1 hour. If you don't use the watch ALL day AND night then you can go about 3 days between charges.

Apple today canceled AirPower, the charging mat that it first announced in 2017, because of an inability to meet its high standards for hardware, reports TechCrunch.

AirPower was designed to charge the Apple Watch, iPhone, and AirPods all at once, but after Apple announced the device in 2017, there were persistent rumors of difficulties and no product ever launched. Apple says work on the product has been canceled entirely because the company has been unable to achieve what it was aiming for with the AirPower.

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards and we have cancelled the project. We apologize to those customers who were looking forward to this launch. We continue to believe that the future is wireless and are committed to push the wireless experience forward," said Dan Riccio, Apple's senior vice president of Hardware Engineering in a statement provided to TechCrunch.

AirPower was introduced in September 2017 alongside the iPhone X, and at the time, Apple said it would launch in 2018. 2018 came and went with no sign of AirPower and no word from Apple on when it would materialize.

There were, however, continual rumors of production, engineering, and manufacturing difficulties. Rumors suggested that there were problems with heat management, inter-device communication, and interference because Apple wanted to design a charging device where you could put an iPhone, Apple Watch, or AirPods anywhere on the mat to charge.

This required layering multiple charging coils, resulting in a device that ran too hot, which turned out to be an engineering issue Apple couldn't solve.

AirPower was supposed to work with the Wireless Charging Case for the AirPods that was released last week, and it was also meant to charge Apple Watch Series 3 and 4 models and all iPhones that support Qi-based wireless charging. With Apple having released the AirPods Charging Case just recently, there was speculation that an AirPower launch was imminent.

The cancelation of AirPower comes as a shock as there have been continual signs that the product was still in the works. AirPower mentions were still included on the newly launched AirPods Charging Case, and Apple recently secured a trademark for the AirPower name. There have also been ongoing rumors of a spring launch, so it appears that Apple worked for months on AirPower solutions before ultimately deciding to nix the project.

Ending work on a project that was already announced and shown off is unprecedented in Apple's recent history.

I'm surprised, shocked, flabbergasted, this can't be true! Lol.

I purchased an iPhone X and Apple Watch with the understanding that this product was about the be released. That was over a year ago.

Hmmm, what to do... Maybe buy some Airpods with the money you'll be saving not purchasing an AirPower?

apple maps. Well they should have cancelled it.

Apple maps is fantastic.

Bwahahahahaha! No AirPower guys, but I guess it’s okay for Apple to gaslight their consumer base with dumb million dollar initiatives like AppleTV+ after Amazon’s FIRE STICK has already been doing what their promising for a couple of years already. I bought my Phone/ Watch/ AirPods with the hopes of airpower being a reality ... LET THE CLASS ACTION LAWSUITS BEGIN !!!! Tim Cook is a FAILURE !!!

I don’t think “gaslighting” means what you think it means.

No, you didn’t but your phone watch AirPods only because you hoped to use them with AirPower. I’m confident you’re not that stupid.

Would honestly not be surprised if they face multiple lawsuits. This is the lowest point in Apple history since the Gil Amelio era.

I don’t think the law works the way you think it does.

How is this the case when the image of it is literally on the back of the box of the brand new AirPods??

Epic Fail Apple

What?

I "literally" just looked at the back of the box for my AirPods 2 (with wireless case) and I don't see a pic of AirPower. Am I missing something or are you "literally" making things up?

Edit: never mind, someone else clarified for me that there are two versions of the box. Sorry!

Wow, this is actually a bit shocking as I can't think the last time Apple announced a product but canceled it unreleased. Someone lost their job over this.
Yea wish it was Tim Cook taken a step down so that a bright young mind with fresh ideas could lead the company. We all knew that eventually Apple would run into this problem once Steve Jobs died at least I did.

Yes it’s embarrassing that Apple announced something they couldn’t ship but the histrionics over this are ridiculous. Nobody is out money or has a product that doesn’t work because this didn’t ship. I’m just glad we finally won’t have to talk about this product anymore.

I will be canceling my AirPods 2! What a joke! To think Tim Cook fires Scott Forestall for his failures when Scott was the future of Apple and innovation and then Cook sells products with promise of AirPad. I would fire Cook, hire Forestall, and get AAPL back on track.
Think of all the felt backgrounds and comic sans we’ve been robbed of.

Please cancel the CEO as well, he is USELESS.

Every product has turned to sh*t after he was promoted, get a real person in there PLEASE!

He’s talking about heat generation. Overlapping coils produce heat and I expect that testing multiple devices - say 3 Xs Max at a time might produce too much heat to be acceptable.

Boxes were being manufactured in 2018 with the AirPower illustration on the box because they were still hoping to go to market with AirPower. If you dont have it on the box, then i believe your AirPods were manufactured this year...which means that Apple made the decision to cancel AirPower a while back

Exactly, which would have required a refrigeration unit to keep cool with those overlapping coils.

I seem to recall that, when the mat was first announced, there were some very skeptical engineers saying thermal issues were far to serious for it to work as Apple had intended. I guess they were right.

Apple maps fantastic? Do you even travel outside your cave?
