HAHAHA! YEAH! I actually stopped by an Apple Store and asked a “genius” about AirPower and then I was like, Oops LOL. And she was like all nice and said: The iPhone works with standard wireless charging pads and I was like: "Oh I know, because I’ve been using this feature for years with my Samsung.” Then I walked out. Awesome!

If if was true, which it isn’t, you can definitely add it to your list of childish comments like “I am a pro gamer and rising Twitch celebrity so I am a pro filmmaker”. Buddy. you are not.

Against the advice of their engineers:

But late last year, with the product absent from the most recent iPhone launch, noted Apple insider Jon Gruber wrote: "There are engineers who looked at AirPower’s design and said it could never work, thermally, and now those same engineers have that 'told you so' smug look on their faces."
AirPower. Butterfly Keyboards. iPad Pro's bending. Continued delays with the Mac Pro. The initial issues with the MBP's overheating and throttling.

Something is affecting Apple negatively when it comes to their hardware design. Maybe it's as simple as things are becoming incredibly complicate and crap like this will happen. But, if top leadership is too distracted by the pivot to services then they may be ignoring valuable input from their engineers.

That thing is clear, the obsession with making these products thinner.

I was hoping this would remain the headline issue on Macrumors throughout the weekend to see if we could break some sort of comment record. Alas, the article is cooling off quickly.

Thing is - this product was never released. It’s not like the butterfly keyboard saga where people bought a faulty product. You can’t be hurt by a product that was never available. Why are the haters so upset again? Since when were they so concerned about the “face” of the company?

Is it a mistake? Sure. Does it deserve all the scorn and criticism it’s currently getting? I honestly can’t see how.

And don’t give me the crap about how they are actually concerned about the state of Apple, or how this is proof that Apple is doomed. This is nothing more than the haters using any opportunity they can get to bash Apple.

This is probably what Steve Jobs would be tolling his eyes over. Not the AirPower saga.

I think the idea that, due to advancements be other companies, Apple realized that apart from the technical issues:

1: It would charge slower than other brands devices due to it's positioning method
2: It would be priced WAY above alternative options

They decided it was not worth pursuing.

Reviews would almost all say, it was Hot, Slow and Overpriced.

I still remain convinced, Apple should still release wireless charging stands, just make them, fast and reasonable price, and don't try to be all clever by going for design over function.

Stick an Apple logo on a nice quality typical wireless charging stand and they'd sell by the millions.

Not an engineer but I can understand why making this device would be an issue.

Just surprised they announce at all given that it was not a sure thing.

From a company like Apple, this is a mistake. Because of what product it is, it is a minor mistake, a slight embarrassment.

At least you can look at it on the bright side, you have saved yourself about a $100 bucks and you can go get a cheaper charging pad on Amazon...

I'd be willing to bet it was a manufacturing issue, not a "we couldn't solve it" issue.

Distinction seems overly fine. Even if Apple had a working prototype in their labs, it’s moot if the device can’t pass safety checks or be manufactured at the scale that Apple operates at. Either way, it is what it is. We will never see AirPower, the earth continues to rotate on its axis around the sun, and life still goes on.

On a side note, I guess this also means that my current charging setup gets to stay for that much longer.

Already have a few cheap Anker pads I picked up from amazon last year (see my photo above).

You could make this exact same argument for every product Apple makes and sells.

This is true, but there is a discernible difference between the cheaper phones, pcs etc compared with iMacs, iPhones etc. In so far as charging cables etc, not so much. Apple is usually first to market with these products and people pay the premium before the cheaper alternatives appear. They’ve missed the boat with wireless charging.

Why bother competing with third party companies when I can buy a $15 charger for my phone off Amazon and my watch comes with a charger. It seems less of “it can’t be done”, and more “it would be stupid to do it”.

What about the people who ordered AirPods with wireless charging under the assumption that AirPower was following. Seems like a cluster...

I already bought mine, but not because I hoped I can buy an overpriced charging pad from Apple. They should officially recommend a charger like they do with the LG displays.

Apple iPhone X + iPhone 8 Event September 12, 2017

Phil Schiller: "This system has a great interface. They intelligently work together and communicate with each other to manage the charging through one, more efficient, charging system. This is not possible with current standards. But our team knows how to do this. We call it AirPower. We hope people love it."

He should have said, "After announcing this, I hope our team can figure out a way to do it".

What Apple needs right now is Eisenhower, not Churchill. Apple is no longer the scrappy young upstart with nothing to lose, and what it needs most now is stability, not a loose cannon who can’t even be trusted to moderate his own twitter presence online. And I happen to like what Apple is doing right now. It makes perfect sense to leverage on Apple’s strong mobile presence to enter adjacent markets whose success is predicated on precisely that. I just wish more of their services like Apple news were available in Singapore. I would sign up for it for sure.
Why don’t you just subscribe to Apple with a monthly fee so you make Apple and yourself happy.
Apple hasn’t been doing nothing new with their news and tv+ what isn’t already on the market provided by others who do a better job. Apple is spreading thin these days. Half baked services and stagnant hard- and software for years now. Don’t tell me the hardware updates two weeks ago make you really excited because those upgrades were long overdue and should happen every year to stay relevant in the technology business.
More than one billion devices Oprah screamed on stage and Timmy was dropping tears.
He acted as he was the new messiah from some kind of religion. The problem with those guys is that they probably believe their self by in the meantime alienate their core business and customers.

Apple has become a me too business for well situated customers who don’t have much knowledge of technology. Even their own workers looked uninspired to me on the keynote except for the staff like eddy cue, etc. who probably were more excited by prospects to do with money, than things with the customer in mind.

What’s happening to China will spread around the globe in a much faster pace Apple is counting on. Everything they’ve announced isn’t to benefit the customer but to lock you in. Those practices only work when you have something better to offer.

There will indeed be interesting years to come and I’m looking forward :D

Samsung would have released it. Releasing unsafe products that may explode is their forte.

This and really can the “Tim cook has to step back” shouting stop please? Reminds me a bit of the “lock her up” culture a certain president has been forming in a certain country. Cmon it’s not his fault that physics forbid that it could work. It was his fault that they announced it, but I’m sure that the engineers back then were enthusiastic about it and wanted to prove that they can pull it off if they go the extra mile. Humans fail, sometimes it happens. I’m super sad about it because i really wanted AirPower :( And I’m sure if they couldn’t pull it off, we will never see a product like that, at least not with current inductive charging tech. I ordered the nomad one which is an ok Solution for charging both the phone and the AirPods, but I really wanted an option to charge the Apple Watch OCCASIONALLY on my desk too. Just for updates and music transfers. Because in my bedroom where the Apple Watch charger resides the WiFi is poor and music transfers are too slow.

It all wouldn’t be such a big deal if they were able to deliver on other aspects. All they do is announce and don’t deliver. And by the time they’re able to deliver all the excitement has gone and other companies delivering the same, and in most cases better, solutions/products.

But that isn’t only the problem. They’re spreading thin with neglecting areas they once ruled. I really miss the old Apple who was nimble and focused and made sure they were the best in every category they were in.

Today I can’t name one single category they excel.

Anybody that is capable.

Tim goes around telling people about what values you should have, who does he think he is?

He should be removed if he does not understand what he is doing anymore which you can clearly see in the products.
Not what I'm saying. I'm saying, what products have been released under his watch that are just terrible? Apple is a far larger company ever since he took over. He is responsible for apple literally being the biggest company in the world. So I'm really curious what products you think are terrible, since the market obviously disagrees with you?

"After much effort, we've concluded AirPower will not achieve our high standards, and we have canceled the project.

-Translation-

We couldn't figure out how to make it work, so we gave up. We repurposed our efforts in developing the Animoji Pro.

Yawn weirdy-beardy, another tired old joke how the same team does everything. Doesn’t work does it really.

Maybe explaining it another way would help. The AirPower engineers had one priority. The highest of priorities. Making AirPower work. That’s 100% of their time, attention, effort and thinking. The content folks? Similar, but different: Putting together deals for great content. The credit card group? One priority. Their highest priority? A successful credit card offering that will absolutely mint cash. It’s going to be a veritable cash cow. And one guess what the gaming subscription groups #1 priority is..

This is exactly wrong. APPLE is ONE company, and it has no single priority, and it shows. APPLE is not succeeding in any single area for the reasons you laid out above.
