I think the timing is as good as it can be, they made a huge keynote showing "new" Apple, dedicated to a spectrum of new and 'exciting' services, to show that Apple has a 'vision', and then a few days later they announce this colossal hardware failure and hope that the noise they made a couple of days ago helps drown the fiasco.
Yeah. This only matters if you want it to matter. If you don’t want it to matter, it literally doesn’t.

Can you imagine if they released AirPower for real on April Fools Day? That would be so confusing :D
I would like to see this happen. But I think a snowflake has a better chance of falling in the Mojave desert in the summer.

I feel like there had to be some underlying fire/safety risk that Apple didn’t want to take a gamble on (considering the rumors of overheating that we have had for about a year now.

Found the RPDR fan.

AirhPowah! You'll burn everything!

$250 billion dolllars or whatever it’s up to nowadays and they can’t even make a wireless charging mat, lol.

I’ll be picking this up at some point. Charges Apple Watch, AirPods, and iPhone all wirelessly at the same time. And unlike AirPower you don’t have to remove your loop strap to charge the Watch: https://hellonomad.com/products/base-station-apple-watch

So much for Apple creating a truly wireless AirPower someday when they can’t even get this right.

Same, bought my Nomad stations (w/the watch charger) literally 20 mins after the AirPower news dropped.

I think a lot of people here forget that the reason Apple announced Airpower back in 2017 was because they couldn't just release an inductive charging iPhone without spinning it as something new.

Remember, Apple was severely late to the inductive charging party, the Airpower was the perfect excuse for being late, ie the idea was "finally we can justify inductive charging because it simplifies charging for multiple devices". That was the entire premise.

The failure of delivering Airpower shows not just a minor misstep, it represents how off Apple is vision-wise, almost late 10 years to inductive charging and failing to add anything new, along with being late to almost everything else: OLED, water-proofing, higher storage, edge-to-edge screens etc. Failure to do iCar, failure in smart homes and failure to compete with Alexa.

This thing is the tip of the iceberg.
There was no spin to this. The concept is one that nobody has brought to market and maybe for good reason...no other company could figure out how to do an “AirPower”.

I’m waiting to see how far off apple’s vision is considering last quarter was $84b. Maybe their vision is spot on with no tip of the iceberg to be seen.:apple:

This really puzzles me. I have never looked back after going wireless a couple of years ago. Just plop the phone on the charger when I go to bed and it is ready with a full charge the next morning. I see no advantages at all using wired charging these days - the one exception being when travelling and the wired charger is smaller and easier to put in your bag.

Totally agree... I think I plugged in my phone for the first time yesterday on one of my desk cradles. I was actually wondering off the other end of that cable was plugged in and was too lazy to look under the desk.

I use wireless chargers my office, home and car. I also have one for travel, but when in the air, if I need a charge I plug it in inside the carry on. Shameless plug for fuse chicken: https://www.amazon.com/Fuse-Chicken...eywords=fuse&qid=1553963755&s=wireless&sr=1-1 it works well.

Anyhow... I'm not bothered by the cancellation of AirPower. I wasn't going to buy one anyhow. Sure, it was poorly handled by Apple and I'm sure they learned from the experience on the marketing side. At the end, if it were released, people would have complained on the price, or that it did not charge fast enough. Seemingly people here just love complaining about something. Also, so many aren't seeing it for what it was, not a simple charging mat. My AirPods charge just fine on my Fuse Chicken travel charger and on my desktop cradles. I'm over it.

No it doesn’t already work. No you cannot buy it on amazon.

There are no existing charger pads that support placing multiple devices anywhere on the pad instead of just in precise predetermined spots.

Yea, you tell him. Not even Apple can do that.

Still no press release on Apple website...The whole "We've canceled Airpower" message was delivered via some "email" to TechCrunch...To me, it sounds like Apple is actually preparing to launch the Airpower on April 1st.

Mark my words.

p.s. if i would be Tim Cook, i would do exactly the same thing

Okay, this is over dramatic.

That isn't actually overdramatic for me- I can't speak for others. I used to be so fanboi-esque hyped for every Apple event and announcement. I would sneak watching it or following it at work and go over every detail. Remember "one more thing"? The announcement of the iPad? The announcement of the Macbook Air sliding out of the envelope? Not to mention the original iPhone event. Now I don't even watch them anymore, just look at the news afterward.

how do you know if it was a good product if you have never
even use it?
The poster I responded to said he would be wary of purchasing Apple devices in the future because of this. Because of this he would have less trust in Apple products moving forward. I said that doesn't make sense because they didn't release this product because it didn't meet their standards. If they aren't releasing a product because it doesn't meet their standards wouldn't that make you feel good about the products that they do release?

This is very upsetting. I think they spent too many resources on products that are not necessary, like the folding iPhone and any mini mini, maxi maxi, Hugo Hugo devices.

Budding or butting? Either way I disagree with what you say. Considering the AirPods seems to be successful, I’d say your “opinion” is moot. (Or mute)

I actually took the time to google budding vs butting because my instinct was just to say 'I'm right, what are you talking about'. Apparently it's a regional thing. If I said "butting" in person here, either I'd be told I was wrong or the person would nod politely while thinking 'the idiot can't speak properly/' Nice effort making fun of some for their location with your "mute" attempt to disregard my opinion as moot. Is that really the only argument you can raise, an ad hominem attack based on where someone is from? Classy.

Just as wrong are your opinion that selling well means a product is good. Do your think kraft dinner (sorry, kraft mac and cheese where you come from) is the finest food on the market? McDonalds is your favourite high-end restaurant? Standing-room only on a subway train must be a more pleasant travel experience than riding around in a Bentley or Ferrari. Well by your logic anyway. Of course your logic says that you should insult people based on where they are from.

And you say an opinion that something popular is still bad should be considered moot. So popular is always right. You would have been anti-civil rights in the 60's. Pro-slavery in the 1820's? Hitler's Germany would have loved you. In the 1920's you would have been lining up to prevent women from voting? Because you feel you have to stand up for what you see as popular?

That idea is so stupid it makes my brain bleed. Apple isn’t doing anything to spite one guy.

I'd say that idea is more plausible than any argument for the majority of iOS7's UIx elements being a functional improvement over the prior iOS (all green felt, woodgrain, and stitched leather stylistic elements aside). :)

I think too many Chinese manufacturers already make similar devices which work for cheap so Apple can not charge a premium as they always do for something that just charges you device.

I like how you said that I said something and than quoted me saying something else. Great job.

How about reading your own posts and my replies back in order and then understanding.

I like how you added in the part of my last message that wasn't a reply to you at all. Great job.

For anyone interested, MKBHD released an explanation of what seems to have happened here.

Long story short, it appears that Apple couldn’t solve the “put your devices anywhere on the mat” problem which sounds trivial, but is a big deal. You’d have to have a ton of coils overlaying each other and figure out what to do with all the heat generated. It would have been an incredible feat of engineering if they pulled it off.

I know there are lots of disappointed people, and Apple does look kinda goofy here, but kudos to them for giving it a shot. I think the real mistake was announcing it too early. And let’s be honest, the writing has been on the wall for a looooong time.

I’ve been hoping for something faster. At least 12 W charging. 7.5 W is just too slow for these high-capacity battery new iPhones. Do you think Apple will release a software update that will increase the max charging rate to higher than 7.5 W?
