“Apple doesn’t innovate anymore?”

You are confusing innovation with execution. The very reason that they failed to execute on AirPower was precisely because it was so innovative. If they didn’t want to be innovative they could have churned out a standard pad with two Qi slots and a watch charger in it, and called it a day. They would have had no problem executing on that. But it would not have been innovative.

APPLE IS FAILING ABOUT BOTH INNOVATION AND EXECUTION.
Yes, Apple does NOT innovate anymore. The entire computer line up is outdated and overpriced.
Upgrade cycles have become a joke.

Despite the Apple watch there were not a single product that was actually innovative that dirupted the market.
Even worse Apple is not even keeping decent products updated they just change the internals.

The last time Apple updated the iMAc design was 10 years ago. Mac Pro 6 years and Counting. Mac Mini, same case than 4 years ago, still problems with heating and way overpriced. Macbooks Pro one of the worse products ever designed, with a keyboard that been having problems since 2016.

The upgrades announced during the entire week before the event were all a joke.

Is that INNOVATIVE???

Quick question.. how do you place Apple Watch with metal bands flat on Airpower?

Something something AirBender, does Apple own rights to that name? :D

This has become quite the thread. Big story! And I'm glad to see Scott Forstall got mentioned along the way ... maybe he lost his job -again-!

Definitely a dodgy move to announce after releasing those AirPods. Maybe to cover the loss they need to go into bands for those like they do with the watches, to prevent dropping them.

It does keep one wondering what they are up to in that new campus though. So far just insanely expensive updates to products that still are not upgradeable. Perhaps eventually just turn it into a massive old tech landfill? Or museum.

“despite the Apple Watch?”

Apple Watch has disrupted the watch industry.
Airpods have disrupted the earphone industry.

The reasons macs get short shrift is because they know the future of computing is not mac.

How embarrassing for Apple.
Has this ever happened before? Where they announce a product at an event and then cancel it???
Apple or rather Tim Cook needs to wait until a product is ready before going public with it.
Apple is slipping further from being a high profile and respectable company.

Could you imagine if Steve had announced the iPhone and then it was a no show.
I'm just gobsmacked.

this is very similar to the apple maps fiasco, where senior most management level was supposedly told by person in charge of apple maps that it was mostly ready to go.
it turns out, apple maps wasn't even close to being launched.
and for most countries still isnt, by the way.

but anyway, in this Air Power case, hapless senior engineers most likely promised that it was looking good to get rid of the remaining kinks.

it was obvious that to me that it was an ambitious device, and if they could do it, it would likely be a very expensive product, out of the price range for most consumers in the world.

Does Porsche change the 911 design every year? No. You know why? Because it's a classic design. The current iMac design is iconic. It's beautiful. It's perfect. No need to change it for change's sake.

Based on one's personal definition of innovation and execution, one can say apple is failing with neither. If the definition of innovation is market disruption, very, very few products in the world actually meet that definition. If the definition is more along the lines of what would find in a dictionary, then apple is not failing in either innovation or execution. Unfortunately airpower failed in execution, but it had plenty of innovation.

Well, this is the Apple of today... They cannot even develop a wireless charger...
Nobody else has managed to accomplish this feat, either. What’s your point?

They change the engine, the body shape, the dash. They introduce new reliability flaws to make sure that each model has its engine block crack in a different place after 65000 miles.

They work hard, Porsche does.

Could you imagine if Steve had announced the iPhone and then it was a no show.

A lot of people don't realise it, but what you describe was actually a Very Real Possibility. The iPhone was so far from ready when it was announced: Apple didn't even know how half the features on it would actually work in the real world, such as typing. Apple had to announce it to shut up the whiners and press who wouldn't stop blathering about how Apple was doomed unless they announced a phone a year ago. Luckily, Apple was able to shift things into top gear and get the iPhone sorted for a timely release. But there was absolutely no guarantee that would happen.

The Nomad Charging Mat (Apple Watch Edition) literally is an Apple Watch charging puck glued/stitched/attached to the side of a standard Qi charging mat, exactly as I said. Maybe you should google how Apple's AirPower was supposed to work (hint: it involved putting the Watch flat down on the charging mat without any particular alignment).
[doublepost=1553969289][/doublepost]
Not interesting enough for them. Anybody could do it, nothing that they could charge top dollar for by being unique in the way it functions. Same reason they haven't released a plain Qi charging mat just for charging the phone alone.
Are you saying that because you want your watch to be placed in a different position than the pre determined spot on the Nomad, that somehow this lack of varied placement makes the Nomad some piece of junk. Isn't the charging port on the iPhone in the same place all the time? Does this lack of movement make the ability to charge the phone somehow an inferior ability.. your refusal to accept that theres perfectly good 3 device charging options, that ain't junk, that work perfectly fine is absolutely staggering... once you realise that the rotten fruit firm arnt the only company on planet earth that can actually make some pretty cool tech, your life options will be so much easier ..

I personally have tried several different wireless chargers they are always not 100% reliable - I always have to seem to fiddle with them to get the phone is "certain position" to start charging

The vertical ones work 100% for me, I hate the flat ones for the reason you mention.

Is that one or two seconds of your life you will.never get back?

So despite all the other manufacturers that have successfully made a charging mat/pad do you guys really believe APPLE couldn’t Apple Watch Series 4, AirPods, iPhones, etc all use QI and even if they couldn’t get 3 devices to charge at once they surely would’ve released something that the Apple Watch could charge on. I think they’re setting us up for an April’s fools day promo
A wireless device to charge the watch? Like the “wireless” inductive charger included with the watch?

That work perfectly well charging multiple devices at the same time. So if they work they ain't crap, and are you saying you would prefer to pay more? Wow, no wonder apple has so much money with you as a customer.

Those don't work for me. I reach over to my bedside table to grab something else in the dark. I’d bump the phone half an inch and wake up to an uncharged device. I'll pay extra for something that actually works.

The poster I responded to said he would be wary of purchasing Apple devices in the future because of this. Because of this he would have less trust in Apple products moving forward. I said that doesn't make sense because they didn't release this product because it didn't meet their standards. If they aren't releasing a product because it doesn't meet their standards wouldn't that make you feel good about the products that they do release?

did the macbook pro keyboard meet
their standards?

It is not my fault that it took you 18 months to realise in which way Apple's approach for AirPower differs from existing charging mats that have multiple parts to charge multiple devices. I am merely describing that difference (and Apple's motivations behind it). But you go ahead and keep shooting the messenger that brought you that information. If you didn't understand until now why AirPower was technically noticeably more difficult than existing combinations of multiple charging 'mats', that is on you, not on me.

And for you putting words in my mouth implying that me saying 'technically simpler' is akin to calling it 'a piece of junk', I think that falls under the category of slander.
