Apple is recommending mesh routers for larger homes. I have a large home and I currently have 3 x AirPort Extreme base stations (802.11ac) in my home that are connected to one another via wired gigabit ethernet backbone.

Is there anything I am missing out on that these mesh routers can do? It seems they are only handy for people who don't have their homes wired for gigabit ethernet. Any other advantages?

Nope in fact your setup is better than mesh IMHO. Your setup will be faster ultimately thanks to the wired backbone. Best approach is still wired backbone with multiple access points. Mesh is really for situations you cant setup a wired backbone.

I have heard good things about this as well, I prefer the Google WiFi simply because it is dead simple, but there are plenty of options now.

I haven't tried Google Wifi, however I can say that the Orbi took no time at all to setup (1 router + 1 satellite). As long as we are happy with our respective decisions and the wifi service is solid, that's all that matters!

I remember getting airport cards for our iBook and PowerBook, and setting up that first graphite squashed Hershey Kiss Airport router. The housemates at the time, who all had PCs and had never even really heard of WiFi, were completely dumbfounded. You mean there’s internet waves going through the room, right now? Apple did so much to mainstream and popularize wireless networking. They were building the antennas into their hardware for years before it was a standard item in the PC world. I get why they’re departing the market, but I think it’s kind of sad.

Shame. I have been using the last of the Extreme (with 802.11ac) and am very happy with its rock solid stability compared to other wireless routers that keeps needing power recycling.

Apple should get back in there with next gen wifi protocol and mesh network (Airport Mesh?). Maybe acquire eero and get to work?

I wonder if prices will go up or down now on eBay. I had been waiting for eons for a refurb to show on the Apple Store (Canada), but there haven't been any in the last year. Luckily I found one locally on eBay for way cheaper used. Setup is as below now, to cover a large L-shaped house, over three levels.

I actually use my ISP's router to route, and just use these Airports as WiFi access points.

Below is from my iPhone 7 Plus to the internet with the above setup. No complaints here with this 5 year old technology.

That Koodo ad is pretty ironic. :D

I was really hoping that they were just waiting until the next WiFi standard to come out to release new AirPort base stations. I'm sad that they're being discontinued.

However, I do wonder: What will they recommend to replace the Time Capsule for networked backup purposes? We can still do Time Machine backups to local USB drives, but retiring the Time Capsule leaves a big hole for this application.

They seem to be pushing all data into iCloud. Photos, desktop and documents folders. Messages in the works...

Was considering getting the router with the HDD, for easier backup of laptops via Time Machine. As for the router its set I just use what ever my ADSL provider supplies and they tend to work anyway.

It is a sad day but like so much else Apple had discontinued over the year, we will live on!

This company loves destroying everything that got them to the top.

So true. Products that made me switch 15 years ago. It really hurts.

Don’t want to be sentimental but I watched Pirates of Silicon Valley this week. Makes you want to go back in time and enjoy Apple products like a taste of the future. It’s been a long time since Apple gave me that.

Has anyone tested the Airport Utility (ver. 5 or 6) on High Sierra or Windows 10? Does it still work?
Is it 32 or 64-bit?

yes. Airport Utility works fine on macOS High Sierra and is 64 bit.

Here is the info on Airport Utility as showing in my System Info (apps):

Version: 6.3.8
Obtained from: Apple
Last Modified: 2018.03.30 10:02
Kind: Intel
64-Bit (Intel): Yes
Signed by: Software Signing, Apple Code Signing Certification Authority, Apple Root CA
Location: /Applications/Utilities/AirPort Utility.app
Get Info String: 6.3.8, Copyright 2001 -2017 Apple Inc.

I have to say I'm a little upset about this. Airports are easy to update and configure. Don't why they are doing this. They should be updating them, not getting rid of them.

Yep. They can make small complex product like Homepod, upgrading Airport (e.gnew Mesh Airport), i think is not pain for them, but Apple refuse, that's shame.

Next : Apple officially discontinue Mac Mini

Look guys, Tim Cook is scum. And he came from money hungry I.B.M. And someone needs to mug the hell outta him.

> List of discontinued products:
AirPort
17 inch Macbook Pro
Jet Black coloured iPhones
The home button of the iOS
Safari for Microsoft Windows
Removable card slots
Soon-to-be-MacBook-Pro-keyboard

How dare Apple remove a colour option for a product. CEO must be scum.

This is sad. I have been using Apple routers for quite some time. They are easy to configure and easy to extend (using another airport).
Well, the trend now is wifi mesh network. Apple could've done the same, making airport mesh with the airport expresses. Even better, imagine if they have Airports equipped with Wx chip for even plug-n-play configurations. But I guess Apple decided routers are not worth their efforts.

Long live Airports!

We always had an AirPort in our house when I was younger, but our latest router is a Linksys. It's meh. I get dropped connections with my MBP that I never had with the AirPort. Oh well.

Next up: Mac Mini :D
Linksys has always been terrible for me, dating back to... 2005 I think. Dropped connections seems to be a never-ending saga for them. NETGEAR seems to be much less of a risk, in my experience.

My 2TB Time Capsule got destroyed by a power spike during a storm in 2014 only 6 mos after buying it. Replaced with a TP-Link and 3TB ext hard drive for less and faster all around. It was a cool package though but one of the selling points to use as a Time Machine backup was kinda bunk since backing up such big data over wifi just doesn't make sense. The replacement has been flawless ever since.

Looking forward to another upgrade in a year once 'ax' and docsis 3.2 mature in the market.

So what do people recommend (that isn't Google WiFi)?

Edit: People have so far suggested....

  • Eero
  • NETGEAR Nighthawk
  • NETGEAR Orbi
  • Asus RT-AC68U
  • Luma
  • AmpliFi HD
  • Ubiquiti UniFi

Plug here for the Ubiquiti UniFi, two of which work well for me in my bomb-shelter-like house.
