This isn't necessarily a bad thing. Think back when there was just "System 6" or "System 7". The only reason that "Mac OS" came to be was because the clone makers came along, and Apple had to make the OS itself stand out. Since there are no longer any clone makers, this is a moot point. In fact, I think it has been a long time in coming.

Logical

I think it makes sense to drop the 'Mac' from the os name. Mac is the hardware (ie. MBP, MP, etc.) that comes with OS X. Note how the title of the window (About this Mac) hasn't changed. I'm pretty sure I don't need to give more example. I do not think in anyway this would mean OS X is going to merge with iOS and it'll become just one OS. That's not gonna happen, not in a while, and when it does there will be a damn good reason for it. So I wouldn't rage over a name change of the OS (who knows maybe they're hinting OS X might be on other hardware besides Mac ;)

Did Systems 7 8 and 9 have 'Mac' before the System section,

ie Mac System 7, Mac System 8, etc....

If not then there is no reason to moan.

No. My memory is fuzzy to the marketing names prior to version 7 which was referred to as “System 7”. When version 8 came out it was re-branded Mac OS 8 coinciding with Steve’s return. I do recall at the time gnashing of teeth because it was “conflicting” with IBM’s OS2/Warp

Mac OS X, really?

Guys, tell me, what do wou say when ppl ask you what kind of OS you use?
Do you say you have a "MacBook Air running Mac OS X Lion"?
Im pretty sure most of you already say: "I have a MacBook Air with Lion", or maybe "I have a MacBook Air with OS X". And, X is pronounced TEN - 10. NEVER X. Right? So whats the fuss about guys? Apple loves to simplify...

never had a single bug on Lion, been working like a charm since DP 1 tbh

Don't want to jinx myself, but I haven't had a problem either. What are these "bugs" everyone complains about (not being sarcastic, I would like to know)?

Maybe they dropped the Mac because Mountain Lion has a lot of the features of iOS.. So OS X maybe makes more sense now?

Totally agree. To me this points to the 'Mac' in MacBook is going to be gone. There will be some new name along with the complete redesign.

By the time the "Pro" has been dropped off one end and the "Mac" off the other i'am worried there will not be much left of the beloved "MacBook Pro" for example.
A lot of "iOSX Air" perhaps
Perhaps an OSX split is required a lean and mean for power users OSX Pro and iOS Air for those who have other requirements
Edit; Also there does not seem to be much talk of improved performance only Features.

Running OS on Third Party almost Killed Apple

This is where they stop making Mac Pros, but allow OSX to run on selected third party hardware.

I hope they do not go down this road again as the "clone macs" almost killed apple - it the first thing Steve did when he got back to Apple was kill the Clones and all 3rd party hardware. I think some form of Mac Pro will still be available for the high end user but I see the imac, mini disappearing to a Apple Branded TV and portable computers. Till you can do full fledged photo editing on a ipad the desktop will still be my tool of choice. Make Photoshop a iOS app without buying the whole desktop version. Once that Happens maybe the desktop goes away! I skipped OS X.6 and went from OS X.5 to X.7 and love it. I just started to learn OS X.7 and want to be apple certified but this new OS might have cost me $ as I have to basically start my training all over again? Is OS X.7 the shortest lived OS in the history of Apple? it is very close to it. New OSs are coming out faster then they can train the people to teach others how to use them. Some of the apple store people are the stupidest people i know. What is the point in learning a new OS when OS X.8 will be replaced by OS X.9 in July 2013?

There will come a time when iPad is capable of running OS X.

You'll be able to pair iPad with an external display and use it like a Mac. Of course, when using iPad's own display you will use iOS.

I believe this is the reason for the branding change. Apple isn't about to license clones. They're just preparing OS X to run on non-Mac Apple hardware.

I disagree only because I think they're trying to open an avenue to run OSX on something that isn't a Mac the same way they used iOS to run on phones, iPads, and iPods (touches and a subset on the nanos). Maybe an Apple TV (hate the rumors but stay with me) will run OSX instead of iOS...

The ATV used to run OS X (a modified version of Tiger). It was basically Front Row except beefed up a lot. I have it. It stinks.

Long time lurker, finally registered....

Although I am not a fan of the name change, I could see this coming and even Apple hinted at it with Lion, and it only makes sense from a business standpoint.

After 10.5, most of the new features pushed in 10.6, 10.7, and now 10.8, are aimed at blatantly broadcasting the similarities and ease of use between all apple products.

This is likely just a marketing scheme, to continue pushing more people that have only owned apple products in the form of "i" device into purchasing a Macintosh that likely otherwise they would not.

If you have been to an Apple store before 2007, and been to one lately, I don't have to explain the demographic change in apple's customer base....

:(

WOW, it looks like the hacker community has foreseen the name change long ago... os x 86... :D

In before all the handwringing and bitching about how Apple's lost its way.

Apple has most certainly not lost it's way. They are executing on their brilliant plan. Apple is simply morphing all hardware to iDevices with iOS, an inexpensive profitable lightweight OS.

Proven as the only product line which can possibly bring them the massive profits required to feed their addiction to money, above all. They know exactly what they are doing.

They are doing a great job of showing other corporations how to fill their coffers like Apple does. Now firmly entrenched in the mainstream despite the slogans and marketing fluff, Apple is the supreme leader in separating people from their money.

Another change, the menu bar is hidden by default in the installer app. You have to hover over it to access it
