Weren't the 3rd-gen iPad sales a bit low compared to the iPad 2? It seems like the number generates a lot of hype, so they should really just keep it.

If the rumors are true- that the new iPhone is going to have an actual change to the size & shape of the screen- they won't need a number this time. It will be relatively obvious that the new iPhone is different than all predecessors.

I agree that it should have iDisk, but I don't know if Apple could give out free storage like that. And what if you have a 50GB MobileMe account full of stuff? And iDisk should really be AFP, not HTTPS.

Sell the extra storage space just like they did with mobileme.

Instead of shutting it down and deleting the data, auto-renew at the mobileme account rate for those who paid up for extra storage in mobileme (but allow them to cancel if they don't want to keep the added storage). Nobody can be surprised at a loss of data, Apple keeps some auto-renewing revenues, all iCloud customers have another nice feature that is curiously missing from iCloud now. Is there a downside to that?

The addition of paid iCloud accounts makes sense, but does Apple have the space readily available on their still-evolving servers? They gave everyone free storage on iCloud, but I'm not sure if they really allocated all of the space to each person or simply capped them at the max.

Your parentheses comments are illogical.
"iPhone 4 was not necessarily due to being the 4th iPhone, rather because 4 follows 3. Likewise, the new iPhone could be called iPhone 5 because 5 follows 4.

But most of all, who the heck cares? It will be what it will be, likely the new "iPhone", just like the iPad. Or, how about iPhone LTE? No matter what people call it now, everyone knows they're talking about one of the next iPhones.

Wrong again. Just try to use a little bit of your critical thinking skills here... first, my parentheses comments are not illogical, these are the official statements by Apple! Every single one of them (are you new to Apple and/or the iPhone?) and again, the iPhone 4 was the fourth iPhone hence the name iPhone 4 not because it followed the number 3, by that logic the second iPhone should have been called the iPhone 2 not the iPhone 3G, but 3G it was, then 3GS (oh noes! two phones with the number 3!!!) You get it now? This really is so ridiculous that I have to explain this to people...

OK this is the last I will say about this off-topic thing:
iPhone 1: Just called "iPhone", makes sense.
iPhone 2: Called "3G" because it had 3G, a big deal. "2" would not emphasize the 3G.
iPhone 3: Called "3GS" because it was just a faster iPhone 3G with not much added.
iPhone 4: Called "4" either because 4 = 3+1 or because it's the fourth one. IDK. And the "4" gets people confused with "4G LTE", which is good for Apple. And I think it did have HSPA+ on AT&T, which is 4G, right?
iPhone 5: Called "4S" because it was just a faster iPhone 4 with not much added.
iPhone 6: Most likely "5" because 5 = 4+1 or "LTE" if it has LTE, since LTE is a big deal.

 Wow. Just, wow.

Ugh, I'm sorry to do this but I just can't stand when people are so sure of somethings that is so illogical... give me ONE logical reason why you think the next iPhone will be called iPhone 5. Just one. Here is my logical reason why it absolutely will NOT be called iPhone 5:

First iPhone: Officially named "iPhone" running iPhone iOS 1.xx
Second iPhone: Officially named "iPhone 3G" (due to the new 3G chip) iOS 2.xx
Third iPhone: Officially named "iPhone 3GS" (due to the added speed bump) iOS 3.xx
Fourth iPhone: Officially named "iPhone 4" (due to being the fourth iPhone) iOS 4.xx
Fifth iPhone: Officially named "iPhone 4S" (due to speed bump/Siri) iOS 5.xx
Sixth iPhone: Officially named "iPhone 6" (due to being the sixth iPhone and running iOS 6.xx) or ? But it will NOT be called the iPhone 5 as there is absolutely not one single reason AT ALL for it to be labeled "5". I'll wager you and anyone else thousands of dollars on it!

So again, you people are saying that the 6th generation iPhone that will be running iOS 6 will be called iPhone 5!? And your logic for this is what exactly?

Why exactly does it have to have a number? If anything you're just as wrong as the guy you were calling wrong.

It'll quite simply just be "The New iPhone", just like we dont have an iPad 3.

UHG! It doesn't! I've stated this numerous times if you bothered to read... (it's why I add the " or ?" to my initial post.) I think it's time for all of us to move on and back on topic.

Weren't the 3rd-gen iPad sales a bit low compared to the iPad 2? It seems like the number generates a lot of hype, so they should really just keep it. It works for the iPhone and iPad because of the syllable count and frequency/magnitude of updates. "MacBook Pro 3" or "Mac Mini 2" or "Mac Pro 2" would be weird, and they rarely even change the designs for their Macs anyway. The low numbers on the Mac Pros and Minis would also be embarrassing :p

I could be wrong here, but here's how I see it:

The iPad 3 sales were a bit lower as not only was it released a few months after christmas, where everyone would have gotten an iPad 2, but also the 'new ipad' is basically just the iPad 2 with a different screen. Other than that its not got any features or even anything that would let the people know it was a 3 or a 2.

Lets also not forget that Apple continue to sell the iPad 2 for $100 cheaper than the 'new ipad', and most people will just be buying that one instead, as again - the iPad 3 offers very little benefit over the iPad 2 for the average user.

Am I the only one wondering what all this arguing over the hypothetical name of a hypothetical product has to do with MobileMe / iCloud? Surely you have something better to do, and if not, could you at least do it in the iOS Blog threads?

Agreed. Sorry. I tried ending it a couple of times, but people keep dragging it back up with the most illogical statements.

Getting back on topic, as for MobileMe, as much as I am enjoying iCloud, it'll be interesting and slightly frustrating (again) to see if iCloud changes to something else. I started back in the days of Apple iTools, then to .Mac, then MobileMe...

So how long before Apple gets bored of iCloud and kills that off too.

I don't know why this comes to mind, I guess because I'm so terrified of data loss, but for some reason I imagine someone who was using MobileMe to store important data and thought, "Well it's the cloud, it's safe, it's there indefinitely." And I imagine that person has been on a two year research trip to the middle of some jungle area without Internet access and once they return to civilization they'll find out that MobileMe was discontinued and all their data is gone. Makes me feel sad for that person, if he or she exists.

I mean presumably most people found out that it was being discontinued. But with most types of storage, you don't need to check your e-mail constantly to find out whether your data is in risk of being erased or not. I think most people approach the cloud as "set it and forget it." And given that MobileMe wasn't too popular, I wonder how much it would have really cost Apple to keep the accounts open?

I was recently pleasantly surprised to find that freeservers.com was still hosting files I had uploaded with them over 12 years ago. It was a fun walk down memory lane, and I never paid them a cent.

As snobbish as it may sound, since this applies to family members of mine (and probably almost anyone), I still hold much less sympathy for someone who fails to observe the computing credo that "if it [your data] isn't in three places, it doesn't exist."

I hate to make a harsh world harsher, but in my opinion there is rarely a good excuse for not finding a way to back up important data in multiple locations, even if it's just to an old CD or a four-megabyte flash drive from eight years ago.

OK.. soo... what happens to my @me.com email address that Apple had me use for my iCloud account?

I thought I read that Apple will migrate that domain to icloud.com ??

If that happens, then what will happen to my itunes account that is dependant on my @me.com addy??

Good riddance MobileMe.

If you had a mobile me account you were given over a year's notice on this happening. You were also given the option to move either just your me.com email address or your entire me.com account (what is supported in iCloud that is) over to icloud.

If you did not do either I would suspect that your email address is no longer functional and all your data in the mobileme account is gone now.

If that was the only email address you had and were using it as an apple id for iTunes you may need to call Apple or contact them at the support site to get the e-mail address changed for the account to something else so that you can continue using that account for purchases.

They probably won't. MobileMe was a failure from the start.

----------

LOL - that would hold less than a quarter of one photograph from my point-and-shoot!

I have an 8MB memory stick on my point-and-shoot. It holds 3 photos. This is why I usually use my iPhone to take pictures.

New iPhone Name

Has any one thought that being they named the iPhone 3G that they may name it the iPhone 4G? It would make sense to me.

Then again I work on computers for a living so I may be thinking too logically. :D

But did they have to just scrap the whole thing and start over. Why not just rebuild it and keep everything. What does iCloud do that is so different from Mobile Me.
