I will never part with my mid 2012 Macbook Pro. To me its a bit of a modern day classic MAC with a perfect set of mobile features for users on the move both back then and some even now.

✓ MagSafe
✓ Glowing Apple
✓ SD Card slot
✓ HDMI port
✓ Optical Audio Out
✓ Reliable Keyboard
✓ No T2 Kernel Panics
✓ No soldered storage
✓ No Dongle Hell
✓ No Emoji Bar

When will we ever see those iconic shots again of a lecture hall or a movie scene with lights low and all those apple logos beaming back at us !!!!! It was just so Apple and it was just such great marketing...... that white Apple logo staring back at us.

How about magsafe? Why have so many tried to duplicate it after Apple simply removed it. Yes USB-C is the future but what a classic is magsafe and how much is this type of connector useful or missed? Why can't we combine it into our USB-C type world.....?

Yes I will be buying MAC silicon and I am super excited for the future. I am looking forward to the new journey ahead but my trusty old Mid 2012 Macbook Pro will always be on the shelf behind me :)

My Old Girl may be obsolete but with 1TB of storage and 16GB of RAM and Catalina Beta she is still running strong!

Good machine... The fact that these are still viable computers even though “obsolete” should be concerning to investors. As Moore’s law slows and breaks, we should probably reevaluate the value of hardware companies. Also imagine if you bought a car your dealer refused to service it after a few years because it was “obsolete”... I think a reckoning is coming.

Still use mine every day. upgraded the ssd last year to 2tb, nit had the chance to swap the battery but will buy a replacement kit for future.
TBH with the way they have gone with hardware doubt I would get a new model in the future even if it won’t run the new os

I want a new battery for my 2012 but after looking on macrumors and other sites it seems to be a crapshoot to find a good one. You can not get the OEM battery any more. Some people complain the new battery does not last as long as the old worn out one.

Damn straight, and my 2015 rMBP15 is still rocking it strong, touch wood!

✓ MagSafe adapters available for less than $10
✓ It's a company logo...
✓ Dongle - $5, hub - $20
✓ Dongle - $5, hub - $20
✓ Pros that require optical audio use a separate interface
✓ Magic Keyboard is great
✓ T2 Kernel Panics were fixed months ago
✓ You want a larger-but-removable component, then make the trade-off with something else...
✓ It's only 'hell' if you purchase individual dongles rather a cheap, small hub, and use all the particular I/O every day
✓ System Preferences > Keyboard > 'Press Fn key to Show App Controls', Touch Bar shows Expanded Control Strip.

Problems solved!
Substandard workarounds galore!

My 2012 MacBook Pro retina is still a workhorse. I'm not disappointed that it's declared obsolete for repair purposes as take care of that myself; what does disappoint me is that they've made it so that MacOS 11 Big Sur can't be installed on it.

I find it interesting that Apple is saying it's obsolete just now. Last year when I called Apple Customer Service about having the battery replaced they said that I would have to go to some shop since Apple considered obsolete at that time (2019). I did have a local guy replace the battery. I had top of the line specs when I custom ordered right after it was announced. Still a great MBP that I'm now using as a Plex server. My 2008 MBP still boots up and works albeit, somewhat slowly...Bought the 2016 15 in model when it first came out and that's my daily driver now...

I remember having 2012-inch

Those were the days.. *dreams* larger displays, more ports ..

As expected, Apple's first MacBook Pro with a Retina display is now officially classed as "obsolete" worldwide, just over eight years after its release.

This model is still my work notebook.
looks like I need to buy a new one. Can’t have one I can’t get fixed by Apple for work. Even if it works fine and has the tools I need setup properly ...

Still using a 2012 for work, and a 2006 MacBook for my bookkeeping.

Actually I am amazed it was still being supported.
This Apple Laptop model is the Nokia 3310 of laptops.

Still my main computer, going strong.

For me still the best design and port selection of the last 10 years.

Hopefully it powers on for another two years before diving into ARM.

Do you still get app&OS upgrades? Did you have to replace anything like batteries...etc etc?

I'm disappointed, given I have the 2012 model and it's never needed service and, aside from the battery not charging 100% anymore, it's still going and going. If Apple is going to boast about making quality products, they should not make them obsolete. I had to upgrade a still-working fine iphone (2012) model two years ago cause the same thing. Argh.

Anyway, I boughta 2020 Air, on which I am typing. Let's hope this one lasts as long as my 2012 Pro. And what about my 2012 iMac 21 inch? ....

Does 'obsolete' mean that the new operating system (Big Sur) won't be able to run or does it mean it just won't be supported for repairs, etc?

My late 2013 can handle Big Sur, and I can get the battery replaced, but the rubber feet are gone and I'm concerned about the anti-glare coating is vanishing from the bezels. Otherwise, I think this machine could easily last 10 years. They're amazing.

You can get new feet on iFix it for $5. That's the thing about Macs, they do last a long time. If my logic board hadn't fried on my 17inch 2009 Macbook Pro I'm not sure I wouldn't still be using it. You've got to replace stuff like the feet now and then but they really hold up.

I have the 2015 15 inch, and it is powering on!! 4 years of video editing and writing. Sometimes 18 hours a day. It has been the computer of my life. At 7 years ill put it in for a major overhaul and keep it for writing. It’s just the practicality of it. How many times I’ve shoved over and let friends take over because they’ve lost their dongles. With a lot of TLC i can see this model powering past 10 years.

My late 2013 will be next; its still better and faster than my new employer provided Dell. Maybe next year, the new 16" MBP is tempting.

Well unfortunately Apple abandoning older computers and devices is nothing new. I had the last 13” MacBook Pro before the retina screens which has been abandoned for some time. They still sold this until mid 2012. Also the 2011 iMac ha sheen gone for some time. Both of these still work great, just no updates. The original iPad was worse, that lasted less than four years! With all the accessories it cost over $1,100! RIP iPad 1.
