I told him I wanted to replace the battery anyway (before it became vintage and official batteries were discontinued again.) He refused several times, and said I was harming the environment due to replacing the battery “early”.
Eventually, after going back and forth for a little bit, a manager was able to override the employee and get the new battery installed. It did leave a bad taste in my mouth that I had to fight to get a “consumable” battery replaced, even while paying ($170?) for the service.
Unbelievable. An idiot working at the "Genius Bar". None of his business when you choose to replace YOUR battery. And for an Apple employee to be saying that YOU were "harming the environment" ... my god, you couldn't make this up.

I have a base model mid 2014 rMBP and it's been pretty much flawless apart from the trackpad failing after 2 years (Out of warranty but Apple still replaced it for free). Still more than capable for daily use and it's unfortunately that Big Sur may be the last OS for it. I have thought about replacing it at some point soon but the battery is still good and it does everything I need it to do with no issues.

Will probably wait for gen2 of the Apple chips if it goes for that long. I can afford to upgrade now but still have that thought that it still works fine. Upgrading will cost me £1800+ and keeping my current machine for now may be the better option.

Man are folks still complaining about "Dongles" in 2020?

Get with the times, folks, USB-C is here to stay.

I don’t care about the dongles, but for god’s sake, what is taking so long for true usb-c hubs?

What I mean for that is allow me to take one of the two usb-c ports on my iMac and split it into a hub with 7 usb-c ports or so. Let me plug in multiple usb-c monitors from that hub as well, along with other usb-c devices.

For some reason, pretty much all usb-c hubs only output to usb 3.0 (usb-a style plugs) and without monitor support. The only way I have seen to add any usb-c ports has been using thunderbolt docks (Usually only 1 or 2), with huge expense and overkill for simply wanting more usb-c ports.

I'm still using the early 2013 Macbook Pro with retina display. Needs a new battery and the coating on the screen is pretty bad but it's still going strong. A shame that I won't be able to get Big Sur on it.

My late 2013 can handle Big Sur, and I can get the battery replaced, but the rubber feet are gone and I'm concerned about the anti-glare coating is vanishing from the bezels. Otherwise I think this machine could easily last 10 years. They're amazing.

Still my main computer 🥰

I use it to do Unity3D stuff and runs very decent. Unreal fries it... the 650M aged too much for Unreal.

The only upgrade that was performed was a storage upgrade using 1Tb now.

I will wait for the next replacement with and ARM brain. I will cross the fingers to no wait too much, because I can't install the Big Sur so no updated XCode... (Or... maybe... Dosdude1 saves me  )

A computer from 2008 with at least dual core cpu can run windows 10 just fine.....meanwhile macOS

These MacBook Pros are still going strong today. It’s pretty insane that a 8-year-old device still performs well.
Well how much better is latest 16" MacBook Pro comparably in real world usage? I have a 2012 15 inch rMB I7 running at 2.6 GHZ with 16GB Ram and SSD. The GeForce GT650 M is a bit dated. Still runs at acceptable speed. :)

My MBP is from 2013 and it is still running fine but maybe it's time to consider changing the battery.

Definitely, if the 2012 is obsoleted now, you can bet the 2013 will be by next year.

And the batteries in these models are dangerous to replace yourself, if you puncture them while trying to loosen the glue they can catch fire. Apple replaces the whole topcase when they do it.

Exactly this.

It made the retina macbook pro one of the best notebooks ever made by Apple, surpassed only by the unibody Macbook pro that preceeded it. Despite the lack of the retina display, those were beasts that I am still using today. When comparing my retina Macbook Pro to the unibody, while the display on the newer one is certainly more pleasing to look at, the keyboard still feels better because of the slightly longer travel. Also, I love the battery indicator and the breathing it did when you closed the lid, like a child sleeping. The new notebooks have none of that "Apple magic" that made these notebooks the best in the business.

Yes this..

Also the Ethernet Port, the matte option (which I have). And even the IR receiver (which admittedly I never use anymore).

The only thing I really don't care about is the DVD drive, but I suppose it's nice to have the space for an optibay.

Won’t run Big Sur

Leave that to dosdude ;)

Easily the best series for it's time.
Tell that to my grandkids who both own MacBook Pros bought in late 2016 but made in early 2015 that are both in need of keyboard and trackpad repair. Just another huge hyped marketing campaign to unload defective computers and render them unsalvageable in the near future. I think that qualifies Apple as a scammer in the Madoff tradition of criminal business practice. In other words, just plain old fashioned stealing and theft.

As expected, Apple's first MacBook Pro with a Retina display is now officially classed as "obsolete" worldwide, just over eight years after its release.

2012-macbook-pro-retina.jpg

In a support document, Apple notes that obsolete products are no longer eligible for hardware service, with "no exceptions." This means that any mid-2012 Retina MacBook Pro 15-inch models still out there that require a battery or other repairs will no longer be accepted by Apple.

The only alternatives are to follow one of iFixit's many do-it-yourself repair guides, or to make enquiries at an independent repair shop, although many do not use official Apple parts.

When the MacBook Pro with Retina display was revealed at WWDC 2012, Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller called it "a breakthrough in display engineering" and claimed there had "never been a notebook this gorgeous."

Apart from being the first MacBook Pro to boast a Retina display, the 2012 model had a much slimmer design than previous models. This was made possible by Apple removing the built-in Ethernet port and optical disc drive for CDs/DVDs. It still featured pairs of Thunderbolt and USB-A ports, an HDMI port, and an SD card slot, however.

Still have mid 2012 upgrade to sad and max out ram, works like charm; too bad I won’t be able to upgrade to the new os when it comes out...

In 2012, I bought a quad-core 2012 MBPr to try to future proof it as much as possible. Over the years I put in a 1TB SSD and replaced the keyboard.

l have Big Sur (20A4299v), Catalina (19G60d) and Windows 10 (20152) running on it with rEFInd as the bootloader. It's just barely starting to feel a little slow but it's still benchmarks (Geekbench 5) faster than the current MacBook Air (Core i3).

I just bought a 2020 13" Mac Book Pro, and couldn't be happier, EXCEPT... ITs BS!

It's the same MAC Experience once you are inside and using a Mac....

There was Really NO REASON to sell my old 2011 one EXCEPT this BS that Apple doesn't continue to support it! This and the other ANNOYING BS, like throttling my Computer Devices purposefully, and other issues that Apple does, have always pissed me off since about 2000... Note I have been an avid Apple user since the Mac+ and Photoshop 1.0.

The Security Requirements, requiring an Updated MAC and IOS is essential. For Apple not to support these devices is pure unadulterated BS...

I'm SOOOOO GLAD that Apple doesn't Make Cars!!!

My 2012 is still going strong. Glad I got the battery replaced last year. Sorry it won’t run the next version of MacOS.

From reading the majority of the posts it immediately becomes obvious that the more recent Retina display MacBook Pros manufactured after late 2014 that have been the focus of the latest screen coating and keyboard problems are the reason for the switch to the new platform and the planned abandonment of the last one. Recalls of the flawed keyboard and trackpads along with the Retina display coating are harbingers of problems yet to surface with these machines in the future. They hope that by ending the old architecture and repair regimes now they also end their responsibility to redress the flaws that they built into these products. The bloom has been long gone from their reputation for quality. Now it seems that it is also gone from their reputation and ethic.

This was an absolutely brilliant laptop! I had this exact model - the mid 2012 256gb version. It’s still going strong, and I’ve given it to my Dad. I’ve got the 16” Pro, and I miss the 2012 every day. The overall setup was perfect, and I’m so glad it’s still working. Hopefully I can keep it going for years to come.

I still use it everyday, it is fantastic. You’d never know it is that old. My PC laptops were done after 4 years

I just had my model serviced with a new battery last year. They threw in a free screen replacement, and I just bought a new charger for it, too, last week. I originally bought it within an hour of the online store carrying them way back when, after watching the WWDC reveal live at work. The machine actually came with some graphics they had tested on it about six weeks before it shipped to me! I expect this MBR will last another three or more years. I am praying it will reach Bar Mitzvah age before I need a new laptop. If so, I will teach it some Torah.

Replaced mine with a 16" when they were released, 7 years of solid service. Should have probably sold it before this announcement, but it's still a very usable machine on Catalina and under 200 cycles on the battery.
