this doesn't explain why my iPhone 4 has abysmally slow 3G speeds, compared to a 3G or 3GS in the exact same location.

i've tried all the "fixes", with no better results.

there is a 14,000 viewed topic on the apple forum regarding this issue.

this also doesn't address the proximity sensor issue. i've hung up on 7 people already.

there is a 69,000 viewed topic about it here.

What about the people who have faster service with their 4? Btw did you test the speed on your 3G with iOS4?

********. After that site did an experiment with the actual dB numbers which showed the signal was actually worse? And if this affects all iPhones, why hasen't it been as widely reported until now? Or was the problem invisible before this?

They did not use iOS4 on their test units so this is not relevant to a possible software bug.

Wow.
Lets ignore Apples letter admitting the problem.
Lets ignore Anandtech's excellent review, especially its final words.
Lets make up our own scenario with no evidence to justify keeping our defective phone.

Their test would not identify a software bug. They used on older version of iOS.

There blatantly lieing about this. If it was a software issue then why would it show up as you hold the phone in a certain place? That's not programig that's hardware. So if they fix this issue with programing it's not going to stop the signal strength from dropping when you touch that area. There conning up with a bad excuse for bad design. It's not software and if anyone excepts this as an excuse then there dumb. Logic tells that if your holding the phone in a certain way and it drops signal it's because your hand placement is obviously preventing proper signals from reaching the phone. And more proof that it's hardware is that when I use a case on my phone and don't touch the Metal case the signal never drips no matter how you hold it. Apple is full of it and can't admit there mistake. So with some clever programig they'll allow tue signal to look stronger then it is so people shut up. Mark my words this isn't going away

Since you are clearly an expert. I would like to see some of the phones you designed. It is clear you know absolutely nothing about cellular networks or digital radio technology.

And this is why the class action suits will win and Apple is shooting themselves in the foot. The phone is defective, it won't work in situations is immediate predecessor will, and it had a -20Db drop from holding the phone normally.

Bob, sorry AT&T gave you a hard time, but it is really premature to say a class action suit will win. You have no idea if Apple's software update will fix the problem or not. You have some idea as to why the bars are dropping, not why you are having a problem with calls dropping. Just out of curiosity. Did you run iOS4 on your 3GS?

The point is that you bought a defective car and decided to not grow a pair and take a stand. You are openly admitting to the fact that you just bent over and took it.

The car works great, and the noise is almost a non issue. I wrote a formal complaint, sent it to the company and the dealer, and received the fix free of charge along with other compensation, like oil changes, etc. The issue is basically gone aside from some minor noise issues that are intermittent at best.

I decided there were other issues more important to worry about.

What the hell is wrong with you people? You are agreeing with the idea that people should hold their phones different. Get a freaken clue!

well, it's not totally bad idea to hold it a bit differently to help solve this issue. It's not suppose to be this way - no way - but you can try to hold it another way and it's not that bad.

What's bad is mr. steve jobs being such an ego prick - to tell anyone how to use their device. He could've answered his emails better than how he does it now. Very condescending especially those one liners he spits back when people write at least a paragraph.

His ego is getting so big - like I said in the other thread, his ego is so large, it's making bill gates look like a saint.

Wearing a pink miniskirt? Aaaah, that's why!

Ive dressed my iPhone 4 in a pink miniskirt and am now immasculating it and making it my B#^#$^ch.

You mean Jonathan Ive?

I bought a bumper with my iPhone 4. Didn't solve the issue. Yes, the rate at which the bars dropped was slower than if I didn't have a case on. I returned the bumper.

If it were a hardware issue, be it any organisation - especially Apple, wouldn't lie for the sakes of keeping customers happy in the short term.

Why would you return the bumper but not the phone.

Woa, there is a ton of bad info in this thread.

This "fix" that apple will implement will be applied to all iphone models except the original 2g.
This fix will only change what is displayed on the status bar as far as signal strength to bar relationship.
The hardware issue will still occur after this fix and will not change, you will still lose reception when holding this phone and bridging the "no no" gap.

Please be aware that if you do not return your scratch/ding free device within 30 days you will be stuck with it.

Please return your phone to the location it was purchased.

If you purchased the iPhone4 at the Apple store and used a ATT upgrade to do so, you must return the phone to the Apple store and then contact ATT to have them negate the contract or you will lose your upgrade and will be tied to another 2 year contract.

Please be aware that just returning the phone to the Apple store will not alert ATT in any way and you must prove return with the return receipt you will get from the Apple store.

If you do not contact ATT within 3 days of returning your device they will not allow you to negate the contract.

JUST to repeat.

There is no fix coming for the "Death Grip"
The "fix" only applies to the relationship between signal strength and bars displayed.
You must return the device to the place of orginal purchase.
In order to negate the ATT contract you must contact them within 3 business days of returning the device to keep your upgrade and original contract.

BTW,
Apple, you are being too sneaky here, please man up and do what is right, and have a voluntary recall of this device.
Or you should have just handed out bumpers. This is only going to effect you negatively from here on out until you do the right thing.

From the press release...

As a reminder, if you are not fully satisfied, you can return your undamaged iPhone to any Apple Retail Store or the online Apple Store within 30 days of purchase for a full refund.

Plain and simple. No restocking fee. There is a reason Apple has the best customer service. If you're not happy with the answers given at the Apple store, call AppleCare at home and they will take care of you.

That is not true, apple stores in Massachusetts are charging restocking fees, reason, there is nothing wrong with the antenna
Also one in NH, same reason 10%
great part is a friend of mine who bought 3 for his family is so pissed about the restocking fee, he is going from apple store to apple store returning them and getting 3 new ones each time
he is on his 5th trip today lol, so that makes 15 phones

So print out the letter and take it in to return your phone (for the Apple store).. Problem solved. I will only charge 1% :)

On another note...
So for Bob and others who have been in the store to return your phones. Did you take pictures of what must surely be massive lines required for 2 million people to return their phones?

This thread is going no where fast. Can we just agree to disagree?
Can we let the software update, and courts sort this all out?

Done! Time for a beer!

Your friend is an idiot.

You're not entitled to hold a product in whatever way you want. Trying holding a gun by the barrel and then complain when you can't operate it.

HAHAHAHA!! this isn't a serious response is it ? can't be.

it's not like people are holding the phone upside down and complaining ?
we're holding it like every normal human being in the world holds a phone.
seriously wake up people.

unreal

So even though the att coverage map says that I am in the best coverage area possible and I can still get my phone to drop to searching for a signal. I am expected to believe that the problem is that I am not getting a good enough signal! So I guess that means even when you are in the best coverage area possible your phone is really only getting 1 or 2 bars. If that is the case then the whole city of Charleston, SC has bad coverage! Everywhere I have been in town my phone will drop to searching if I hold it in my left hand. Just admit there is a problem Apple and fix it!

My observations:

This is the most folksy sounding press release I've read from Apple. It might has well have started with, "You guys are really gonna laugh when you hear this . . . "

It sounds goofy like someone who is obviously lying, but almost in a way that is written like a parody of someone who is lying.

The part at the end about returning the phone is probably a nod to the class action lawsuit.

And finally if the software is bad on this phone and artificially inflates the number of bars, why is the software problem corrected when someone holds the phone? Apple says it's normal for the bars to drop, but it drops 4 or 5 bars on the iP4 because it was too high to begin with. Well why does holding it shock the software back into reality? And why can people replicate this right next to a MiFi tower?

For what it's worth, Apple has not convinced this potential customer, which regardless of the realities, is bad for Apple.

I don't have a problem understanding that if you cover the antenna on any device it'll affect it's signal. I learned this with a black and white TV twenty years ago. Sure, previous phones have spoiled me in that regard but obviously the problem can still exist. Knowing this, I amn choosing to keep my phone. Everyone will understand if you choose not to.

You know the coverage map does not actually account for the hundreds of little gaps in coverage that exist due to structure, interference, etc.

So Apple says the iPhone shows too many Bars and that is why the "death grip" makes it lose all the bars.
Now I am asking myself: How is this supposed to calm those folks who get the message "No Signal" when the phone is held in the left hand?
According to Apple, if you get that message you are in an area with bad coverage, but my cheap-ass Nokia never tells me I have no signal.

So everyone who can make their iPhone lose signal with the death grip: Apple's explanation says this is correct and to me it looks like the update won't make it any better.

Bottom line: If I hold my Phone in the left hand I will not be able to make calls in areas with coverage sufficient for most other cellphones...

1. Slightly change the way you hold it.
2. Get a case (I can't imagine going without one with glass front and rear)
3. Take it back for a full refund.

Folks, this is what happens on the bleeding edge of technology. Microsoft, Apple, Oracle, Adobe, they are all the same in one respect: early adopters are essentially final beta-testers that pay to help these companies perform the final tweaks necessary to really shore up their products.

Yes, Apple has had tremendous success (luck perhaps) with their products being thoroughly tested and they haven't had to deal with something like this before. However, Apple hasn't been in the cell phone business that long (not nearly as long as companies like Motorola, Nokia, etc.) and being the front runner in what has become and extremely heated market, they were bound to make a mistake eventually. These are growing pains that Apple must learn from. Apple is going to need a little time to adequately diagnose the real problem and then find and deploy a fix (more than the two weeks the device has been on the market). OS level software updates have to work their way through what I hope is Apple's pretty stringent QA process.

You early adopters of the iPhone 4 are going to have to endure this problem a little while longer or return for a refund. The iPhone 4 will still be there in a few months when Apple has this issue behind them. If your phones are so important, ask yourself if being on the bleeding edge is worth it? Can you continue to afford to be a beta-tester with a device (if you're anything like me) that is pretty much essential to your daily life and has to always work? I love technology as much as any other IT professional, but I've never found it worthwhile to be an early adopter of any product.

What I really hope comes out of this is two things. First, that Apple really learns from this matter and emerges a bit more humble of a company that becomes far more responsive to what their customers actually want and refrain from their tendency of telling their customers what they want. Second, that maybe next time people will remember that new products are almost always buggy and/or flawed and take that into consideration before racing to buy the latest and greatest product.

Cool, so now the signal strength indicators will more accurately display the hardware error!

So this means that Apple will finally be showing users how crappy the AT&T network really is.

Shame a good phone gets ruined on such a *@#% network!
